CU At The Game Podcast Interview: Outside Linebacker Devin Grant

Welcome back to our NIL Interview series. In this episode, we are introduced to outside linebacker, Devin Grant. Grant, who will play as a redshirt freshman this year despite being on the field in both 2020 and 2021, introduced himself to the Buff Nation late last season. Thrust into the starting lineup for the final two games due to injuries, Grant had eight tackles in the season finale against Utah, a taste of what CU fans can expect from Grant for the 2022 season and beyond.

Grant talks about his recruitment, and the “fake love” he got from schools other than Colorado. Grant breaks down how his role as an outside linebacker has changed as CU transitions from a 3-4 to a 4-3, and what it’s like to have his new position coach (Chris Wilson) also be the defensive coordinator. Finally, Grant talks candidly and openly about the players who left Boulder through the Transfer Portal, NIL opportunities (or the lack thereof) for CU student-athletes, and the mood of the locker room as the preseason magazines roll out, predicting another losing season for Colorado.

So … What’s it like to be an outside linebacker in the film room, with Grant breaking down his off-season preparation into three stages? … What makes Grant believe that the leadership is there in the CU locker room to overcome past adversities, and that the 2022 team is “tired of losing”? … And which personal goal has Grant set for himself, one which, if achieved, will all but guarantee All-Pac-12 status?

… Let’s find out …

  1. Great interview, thanks as always for putting the nil together. I have to say I am really impressed with all of the athletes you have interviewed and Devin was no exception. Well spoken, down to earth. Really like him and it makes it easy to root for him. I love what he said about the guys who are not bought in leaving. I gotta say I would rather have a football team of guys committed to a single vision and focused on that and willing to put in the work than a bunch of guys looking elsewhere and asking about “where’s mine?”. Other than Gonzolez I don’t think the talent loss was all that big and the biggest impact will be to our depth, which means injuries are going to have a bigger effect. I also thought he took a realistic look at NIL. CU is just not in a space where we are going to pay everyone out. Especially on a team that lost a bunch of starters. I think he is totally right that as the team and individual players start having success on the field more NIL opportunities will present themselves. I would still love to see a collective form, even a small one like this series where a bunch of small donors could get together. I know I would be willing to contribute a couple hundred a year to a group that would try and sponsor some of our star players each year. I am not as big of a fan on buying recruits as I have a feeling there is going to be a lot of misses there. But getting a paycheck to our starters or those that start 85% of the snaps or even the top rated 10 guys of that I would totally be in. I can’t create that sort of group myself becuase of my current employer but I would be able to contribute and I would.

    1. I don’t know if you are on BuffStampede.com, but there is a thread where they are discussing doing the GoFundMe on a larger scale, and putting together a pool of dollars either for recruits or current team members. We’ll see what comes of it. It would be nice to see CU fans at least make some sort of an effort to show appreciation for the existing team members.
