USC schedules an FCS opponent for the first time in school history. Thoughts?
  • I just hope that USC has the same result as CU did when the Buffs played their first FCS opponent (a loss to Montana State in 2006) (48%, 72 Votes)
  • I can understand it. USC has to play Notre Dame every year in non-conference play. That's a top-rated opponent every year - and it also makes it harder to schedule home-and-homes with other teams (26%, 39 Votes)
  • Not a fan. While CU and other Pac-12 schools are trying to ramp up non-conference scheduling (to improve the league's national reach), bell cow USC is regressing (26%, 38 Votes)

What is the best CU news of the week (so far)?
  • That Kaitlyn Benner became the first CU athlete to be named Pac-12 woman of the year. A six time All-American, and a 3.94 GPA engineer? Very impressive!! (70%, 150 Votes)
  • That the CU football season tickets were put in the mail. The 2019 season is becoming a reality - and I can't wait!! (24%, 51 Votes)
  • That Nate Tomlinson was named as the Director of Player Development. As Tad Boyle put it: "This was a win-win situation" (6%, 13 Votes)

UW's "Dawg Pound" assessment of CU: "The goal for this team should be getting in a position to compete for the South title in 2020". Thoughts?
  • Sounds about right. A bowl bid is the goal for 2019. In Year Two under Mel Tucker & Co., this team will be ready to challenge for the Pac-12 South (53%, 118 Votes)
  • Not buying it. CU was 5-7 last year (and should have won at least two more games). With better coaching, and a wide open division, I believe the Buffs can compete for a title THIS fall (25%, 56 Votes)
  • I like the optimism, but I'm not sure if 2020 is the answer. CU's non-conference schedule: at CSU; Fresno State; at Texas A&M, plus road games at USC, Stanford, and Washington. Yikes! (22%, 49 Votes)

Which of the following stats about USC do you find the most surprising?
  • Eleven of the 12 losses have been by double digits. Forget that FIGHT ON! stuff, when they’re down, they’re out. (55%, 77 Votes)
  • USC is 1-12 outright as an underdog and 2-11 against the spread. No gutty little Trojans’ upsets here. (28%, 39 Votes)
  • USC is 6-17-1 against the spread in its last 24 games. Under-perform much? (17%, 25 Votes)

Which of the Pac-12's "Hot Seat Rankings" do you find to be the most surprising?
  • Mel Tucker at No. 66 - While Tucker will need to produce, Dan Hawkins survived a 2-10 opening campaign (coaching a team with four division titles in the past five seasons). Tucker is very safe (45%, 83 Votes)
  • Mike Leach (No. 113) rated as the least at-risk Pac-12 coach. Chris Petersen and Kyle Whittingham are much safer than Leach, who could be one more poorly worded statement away from being on a hot seat (30%, 55 Votes)
  • Kevin Sumlin at No. 20 and Chip Kelly at No. 21 - Both need to rebound from losing seasons, but neither are in serious jeopardy this season (25%, 46 Votes)

  1. Stuart:

I like the question about SS’s negative coverage. Personally, I think the see-saw coverage is mostly about “stirring the pot” and/or getting clicks. SS is this year’s draft soap opera–a love/hate fest For one negative story there is a more positive one. Some stories are just hit jobs (anonymous NFL assistant/exec), others just cover every minutia of his life. Yesterday, Kiper has him still going early.

SS is an intriguing draftee warranting discussion, however the extensive overall coverage on every detail for one QB prospect seems over the top. NFL teams have their draft boards, needs, and evaluations and they make decisions based upon that. I’ll be glad when SS and TH are picked today and the focus will be on our team.

  2. The Buffs need to wear the silver and gold that are the official school colors. Black jerseys are OK as the’ve been around for a long time, but out with the black helmets–and the white ones too. Gold helmets with silver pants, alternating with silver helmets and gold pants would be good. Nix on all black and all white!!

  3. Stuart, your polls are so thoughtful and on point. Appreciate you doing this and sharing it with your CUAtTheGame community.

  4. Wouldn’t mind the Cheez-It Bowl at all, as I have connections at Kellogg’s (owns Cheez-it) who could get me tickets!! Is that Cheezy??? 🙂
