CU at the Game Podcast: On the Defensive – Buffs look to Improve in 2020

Colorado ranked 96th nationally in scoring defense in 2019; 104th in total defense. The Buffs have seven returning starters … will the Buffs make substantial strides in Year Two under Tyson Summers? The Buffs return all three starters along the defensive line – will Mustafa Johnson make a name for himself? All-Pac-12 linebacker Nate Landman had double the number of tackles of any other Buff in 2019 – will he get more support this fall? The Buffs are very young (but talented) in the defensive backfield – who will emerge as this year’s star?

I hope you enjoy it! I look forward to your comments!

  1. USC averaged 454 yds/game, vs Colorado 520
    UCLA averaged 405 yds/game, vs Colorado 426
    Stanford averaged 368 yds/game, vs Colorado 372
    Washington averaged 392 yds/game, vs Colorado 238
Utah averaged 429, vs Colorado 372 (ya the same as Stanford huh?)

I didn’t keep going back but it is what I thought. Prior to the Stanford game our defense was a sieve, and a bad one at that. The Stanford game was a turning point, we altered our scheme a little bit as I recall and we changed up our blitz packages. So that game saw us pull even with the team stats. Washington and Utah saw us do much better. It is only two games but I think there is a statistical Reason for some optimism. I would be interested in some additional stats on explosive plays, tackles for losses, sacks, and pressures by game as I suspect they got better.

I do think loosing Onu will hurt though. Maybe more than Taylor.

  2. I like Summers and the D got better as last season went on. I hope they don’t need to blitz as much this year. I have hope for the defense.
