CU at the Game Podcast … Interview with CU Associate AD Lance Carl

CU Associate Athletic Director Lance Carl is a longtime friend to the CU at the Game website, and joins Stuart to discuss the CU roster as the Buffs prepare for Fall Camp. From his unique perspective as the Director of Player Development, Lance gives his insights as to some of the roster battles (his answer concerning the starting quarterback for the opener against UNC may surprise you), as well as to the strengths and weaknesses of the depth chart.

Lance also discusses some of the national issues which affect the CU program, including the new era of Name, Image and Likeness income for student-athletes, as well as the blockbuster story of the day – the reported departure of Texas and Oklahoma to the SEC (Lance gives his thoughts on what could be the choices for a “Pac-14”, along with how Colorado will fit into the seemingly inevitable move to four 16-team super conferences).

Lance Carl Interview Quotes of Note …

  • “Karl (Dorrell) really feels that everyone on the team has a role. We will be a much better team as soon as everybody accepts their roles … The team needs to be ego-free, team-centric” …
  • “Personally, I love it when you have a quarterback that can make it 11-on-11 football” …
  • “We will run the ball, and dictate the game with the run” …
  • “The Chris Wilson defense in a word – simplicity. Putting players in position where they’re strengths can be maximized” …
  • “Chris (Wilson’s) main focus is stopping the run, because until you stop the run, you are at the mercy of the offense” …
  • “We’ve had total buy-in from our student-athletes with (new strength and conditioning coach) Shannon (Turley) and his staff” …
  • “We will compete in every game we play in” …
  • On Texas moving to the SEC: “If you are going from a competitive standpoint, I really don’t understand it. If you’re going from a money standpoint, again, I don’t understand it – how much money do you need?” …
  • “Only Iowa State and Kansas are academically strong enough to enter our conference, but neither of them have the TV gravitas” (you’ll be interested to hear who Lance believes are the Pac-12’s top two choices for a hypothetical “Pac-14”) …
  • “The best thing we can do for CU is to be happy where we are right now” …

  1. Will have to finish interview later, but the part regarding the starting QB maybe not being in place until A&M, sounds very much like a post I wrote a while back where I said it would be great if they could play/start the #2 guy against UNC with very little of the playbook exposed too to “keep everything close to the chest”, not the words I used, but same difference. I like the idea of not showing A&M anything for them to prep for the game. Give the go to guy some reps too, but play a bit of “slight of hand” with who starts and plays more against UNC.

  2. You can tell Lance is jazzed about the coming season. He was talking fast enough to call a hockey game.
The more I hear about Turley the more jazzed I am. I know from personal experience that 3 months of intensive training is more than enough t make a big difference. If anything you have to be careful of overtraining but it sounds like Turley has a lot more bases covered than the average iron pumper.
Focus on the running game…yeah yeah yeah. Gotta establish the running game first. Thats the time worn mantra. Thats fine but please don’t sacrifice the passing game in the meantime. the time worn mantra I prefer is a “balanced offense.” It sounds like they aren’t completely sold on any of the QB’s. I hope that is a temporary condition. Fine…run your butt off but dont run every time on first down and dont just throw only on 3rd down. Lets make the O as exciting as OU’s and turn B-loo into another Rattler. What a great name.
Simple D? focus on stopping the run first? Fine….but thats going to put a lot of pressure on the CB’s Wilson needs to win the chess match the the opposing OC to give them as much help as possible.
And special teams. The talk is always about returns and kicking. For me coverage of returns is more important. Be nice to hear what is going on in that area.
Also sounds like they really wont have a “starter” at QB until after UNC. I hope who ever wins the job greases their wheels enough for the pressure coming in the following game.
