Which post-practice quote from offensive coordinator Jay Johnson do you like best?
  • On how the wide receivers will earn playing time: "I think it's little bit of when the ball's not coming their way. We've really tried to stress in running the football that it's a team effort" (46%, 101 Votes)
  • On QB Steven Montez: "He has unbelievable arm talent but I'm more interested in the rest of his body, particularly in the throw game" (38%, 83 Votes)
  • On depth of the wide receiver corps: "I feel very confident. I think that wide receiver room is very skilled, and I think they've demonstrated that so far" (16%, 37 Votes)

Which of the following Monday post-practice quotes from Mel Tucker do you like the best?
  • "We really had to push them hard today but they responded. That's what I really like about this group. They respond to coaching, they respond to harsh criticism" (48%, 119 Votes)
  • "We don't have a day to waste. It was a hard-hat, no French pastry, meat-and-potatoes type day. Nothing really eventful. No flash. It was just a really hard work day" (34%, 84 Votes)
  • "Leadership is always going to come from the coaches, but ownership with the players is really when you know you've got something. We're getting it here and there, but we need more" (18%, 47 Votes)

What is your prediction for how CU will end September (v. CSU, Nebraska, Air Force, at Arizona State)?
  • 3-1. I foresee wins over CSU and Air Force, and a split with Nebraska and Arizona State. I'm not sure which game the Buffs will lose, but it's hard to see CU going 4-0 in Mel Tucker's first year (54%, 198 Votes)
  • 4-0. Until proven otherwise, the Buffs can repeat the September start of 2018. The Buffs have even more talent ... and better coaching (26%, 97 Votes)
  • 2-2. The CSU and Air Force games are likely wins, but Nebraska and Arizona State are both improved. I like what Mel Tucker is doing, but it's not unrealistic to assume two losses this September (20%, 73 Votes)

The most interesting note from CU's first scrimmage of Fall Practices:
  • That freshman cornerbacks K.J. Trujillo and Tarik Luckett (who moved over from wide receiver this week) made plays. The cornerback position is in desperate need of quality depth, so this is good news (54%, 129 Votes)
  • That tight ends Brady Russell and Jalen Harris were both credited with making quality catches. It's great to hear that tight ends are making ANY catches, quality or otherwise (24%, 57 Votes)
  • That a total of 21 players caught passes. I knew that the Buffs were loaded in the skill positions, but that number is ridiculous (22%, 52 Votes)

Three weeks out from the Rocky Mountain Showdown, what is your confidence level about the CSU game?
  • Very confident. All evidence is that the Buffs are doing well under Tucker & Co., and that this will be a lame duck year for Mike Bobo in Ft. Collins (48%, 124 Votes)
  • Somewhat confident. CSU plays better when they have a month to prepare for the RMS, and the Buffs will have some kinks to work out in their first game. It will be uncomfortable for awhile, but a "W" (31%, 80 Votes)
  • Supremely confident. The Buffs were dominating the Rams under Mike MacIntyre. With better coaching, and CSU a hot mess, I'm looking for another rout (21%, 57 Votes)

  1. Stuart:

I like the question about SS’s negative coverage. Personally, I think the see-saw coverage is mostly about “stirring the pot” and/or getting clicks. SS is this year’s draft soap opera–a love/hate fest For one negative story there is a more positive one. Some stories are just hit jobs (anonymous NFL assistant/exec), others just cover every minutia of his life. Yesterday, Kiper has him still going early.

SS is an intriguing draftee warranting discussion, however the extensive overall coverage on every detail for one QB prospect seems over the top. NFL teams have their draft boards, needs, and evaluations and they make decisions based upon that. I’ll be glad when SS and TH are picked today and the focus will be on our team.

  2. The Buffs need to wear the silver and gold that are the official school colors. Black jerseys are OK as the’ve been around for a long time, but out with the black helmets–and the white ones too. Gold helmets with silver pants, alternating with silver helmets and gold pants would be good. Nix on all black and all white!!

  3. Stuart, your polls are so thoughtful and on point. Appreciate you doing this and sharing it with your CUAtTheGame community.

  4. Wouldn’t mind the Cheez-It Bowl at all, as I have connections at Kellogg’s (owns Cheez-it) who could get me tickets!! Is that Cheezy??? 🙂
