Miami players to each earn $6,000/year from a training academy in Florida for use of their Name, Image and Likeness, while Nike will give Oregon star Kayvon Thibodeaux a six-figure deal. Thoughts?
  • Thanks, NCAA and Congress, for leaving us with the Wild, Wild West. NIL was supposed to help players promote themselves, and this is just the tip of the iceberg of what is going to happen nationally (44%, 101 Votes)
  • $6,000/year is not that much, but if Phil Knight is able to buy a championship team ... how will programs like CU ever have a chance of competing? (36%, 83 Votes)
  • It's interesting, but not devastating. Good for the players to be making some extra coin. "Buffs with a Brand" - you're up. If CU is going to stay competitive ... well, it starts now (20%, 45 Votes)

Reggie Bush wants his Heisman Trophy back, claiming his offenses would have been allowed under the new NIL rules. Thoughts?
  • Oh, Hell to the No. What Bush did was illegal at the time it was done. Just because the rules changed doesn't make Bush's actions acceptable now (47%, 103 Votes)
  • I just wish Bush could learn from Sha'Carri Richardson (the sprinter banned from the Olympics for smoking pot) - accept the consequences of your actions, and move on with your life (34%, 75 Votes)
  • It makes sense. The rules were unsustainable - and, according to the Supreme Court, unconstitutional - so righting the wrong makes sense (19%, 42 Votes)

Los Angeles Times: USC should abandon the Pac-12 and go independent. Thoughts?
  • All by itself, the theory has no merit, but, when the next round of expansion comes along, anything is possible, including USC going independent (53%, 97 Votes)
  • Absurd. One columnist spouts off a theory, and we're supposed to take it seriously? Nevvver gonna happen, so there's no point in even debating the issue (37%, 68 Votes)
  • Hate to say it, but the columnist may have a point. USC's brand is greater than that of the Pac-12, and the Trojans could play a national schedule a la Notre Dame ... and be a national power (10%, 19 Votes)

CU's average finish in all sports ranks 8th in the Pac-12. Thoughts?
  • Regardless of the number of sports counted, CU should be finishing higher. Here's hoping CU's Olympic sports will be more competitive in the future (35%, 43 Votes)
  • Sad to see that CU has the fewest number of NCAA sports of any of the Pac-12 schools. I knew the California schools had all of the niche sports, but its sad CU is behind Utah and Washington State (34%, 41 Votes)
  • Well, the tally didn't take into account skiing, where the Buffs finished 2nd in the nation, so the numbers are skewed. Take the report with a grain of salt and move on (31%, 38 Votes)

SI: Colorado one of the few schools with programs designed "to innovate and empower their athletes". Thoughts?
  • I like it. You have to trust that Rick George, who has been on the NIL working group for over a year, has had his eye on July 1st for some time, and will do what is necessary to keep CU competitive (51%, 76 Votes)
  • It's too early to tell, but I'm betting that CU and its fans will not be "helping" CU's players as much as other teams fans will be helping theirs (39%, 57 Votes)
  • Sounds good in theory, but preparing student athletes for future business dealings won't help with recruiting when other schools are finding ways to get their players paid now (10%, 15 Votes)

  1. Stuart:

I like the question about SS’s negative coverage. Personally, I think the see-saw coverage is mostly about “stirring the pot” and/or getting clicks. SS is this year’s draft soap opera–a love/hate fest For one negative story there is a more positive one. Some stories are just hit jobs (anonymous NFL assistant/exec), others just cover every minutia of his life. Yesterday, Kiper has him still going early.

SS is an intriguing draftee warranting discussion, however the extensive overall coverage on every detail for one QB prospect seems over the top. NFL teams have their draft boards, needs, and evaluations and they make decisions based upon that. I’ll be glad when SS and TH are picked today and the focus will be on our team.

  2. The Buffs need to wear the silver and gold that are the official school colors. Black jerseys are OK as the’ve been around for a long time, but out with the black helmets–and the white ones too. Gold helmets with silver pants, alternating with silver helmets and gold pants would be good. Nix on all black and all white!!

  3. Stuart, your polls are so thoughtful and on point. Appreciate you doing this and sharing it with your CUAtTheGame community.

  4. Wouldn’t mind the Cheez-It Bowl at all, as I have connections at Kellogg’s (owns Cheez-it) who could get me tickets!! Is that Cheezy??? 🙂
