“T.I.P.S.” for CU at Oregon State / Can the Buffs Build on the Momentum of the Overtime Win over Cal?

Well, it was a great day to be a Buff last Saturday, with Colorado picking up win No. 1 on the 2022 season with a 20-13 overtime win over Cal. I am joined for this podcast by Brad Geiger and Neil Langland, and we will start with a recap of the Buffs’ big victory, including thoughts on what interim head coach Mike Sanford, who has rejuvenated the CU locker room, would have to do to earn an interview for the full time position as CU’s head coach.

We will then present our “T.I.P.S.” for the Oregon State game. Oregon State is 5-2 on the season, and the Beavers are coming off of a high of their own – their first win over Washington State since 2013.

So … What is it about Oregon State, a team which is not great at anything, but good at everything? … How will the forecast for a wet Saturday night in Corvallis play into the strategies for the game? … Can the CU offense, not noted for its red zone prowess, get into the end zone against one of the top red zone defenses in the country? … And the real question: Was the CU victory over Cal a “one-and-done” for the 2022 Buffs, or will the momentum carry the Buffs to more wins in the second half of the season? …

… Let’s find out …

  1. It’s way too early to make a statement about Sanford. But admit I’ve thought about the guy and his energy, and he knows this is a job interview like no other, either for CU or somewhere else. To me, I want to see what he and the players can do vs. OSU and ASU — two decent teams but they can also be beat.

Ugh, the problem I have with Sanders is he seems all about himself, and the appeal is you get to ride on the Sanders bus. Not sure how much it is about the kids, but I could be way off on that. He just seems kind of gimmicky.

  2. I’m actually starting to warm to the idea of Sanford earning the gig. We’ll see how the next six games go, but I like his style. And I like Ryan Staub, who he recruited, too.

Having the picnic pizza party thing is great. His energy is great. Did Karl ever have the team to his house? I bet Mike would. That’s where I think coaching can drive the bus. Unity, vision, and the plan to execute to achieve the vision. So far, Mike’s saying all the right things, and the kids seem to be buying it. The kids still have to execute (70% relies on it), but belief is big.

I also think there’s value in continuity. And the dude clearly knows the game, and seems to be able to get the kids to execute better than they were, on both sides of the ball (much more so w/ Chatman’s help on the D, so far, admittedly).

I also think, if he’s smart (or if his agent is) he can say “hey, give me $2.5mill-$3mill/yr, base, loaded with performance incentives and another $1mill/yr for recruiting budget, and an annual step up of 5% or whatever for me and the assistant coaching salaries.” That would put him in line w/ what Karl was making, with a ton more for recruiting (more than doubling current recruiting budget, which I think is $750k-ish).

Now, if they could get coach Prime? Go for it. I’m not as high on Mendenhall as many. I think Troy Taylor would be interesting, too. At least they got that search firm back in the mix.

    Go Buffs

  3. Sanders?
    hmmmm
just went and checked Jackson State’s record. Looks good. Not sure why you think he wouldnt be a cultural fit in Boulder? From his end? I would be disappointed in Boulder if it was from their end.
The guy can recruit and with his connections could probably recruit good assistants as well. No question he is an O guy too.
    I like the idea

  4. If Sanford goes 4-2 we have to hire him. That means he has fixed the offense, the defense has continued to be the defense we thought they should have been. We will not get a coach that could have done better. That means he wins 2 against the elite of the Pac12 (Oregon, Utah, Washington, USC) guys, gotta be real here. If we won 2 of those games any other season we would be cheering. To be honest of he goes 2-4 I think we have to interview him and discuss, 3-3 I lean toward him unless someone just jumps off the page (Golesh, Sanders maybe), but if he actually goes 3-3 is there any question we would have been better vs Airforce, and Arizona? That means we are potentially a bowl team. But 4-2, that is miracle worker stuff and we would be shooting ourselves in the face for letting him go out the door. You cannot go 4-2 over the next 6 games without solidifying the defensive performance and fixing the offense. Now, do I actually think we will go 4-2…… No. To be perfectly frank I would be pretty happy with 2-4. Beat Oregon State or Washington and close out ASU and I would be pretty happy for a team where we are at and then I would be interested to see who the coaching candidates really are. Is Mendenhall a real prospect? Do we think Virginia was an aberration? Is Herman as bad in person and in reputation as there are rumors for, he did well given talent at Texas? Do we consider risking Sanders as a cultural fit in Boulder (is Boulder ready for PrimeTime?)? If we only go 2-4 then we take a hard look at who really wants the job. I would probably take the coach with the best plan for our offense and the best track record of good offenses. That obviously doesn’t favor Sanford unless this offense somehow fixes itself over the next 6 games.
