No reason to be Nervous

//posted 10.29.2010

It was Saturday night. The team was on the road, playing before a national television audience. The team had actually had recent success against its opponent, but the historical record was on the side of the home team.

It was a big game for both teams, but for different reasons. One had national title aspirations; the other was looking for respect.

The fan was pensive, concerned. In a word: nervous.

Where is Dandy Don Meredith when you need him?

For those of us old enough to remember, the ABC Monday Night Football football crew once consisted of Frank Gifford, Howard Cossell, and Don Meredith. In the 1970’s, the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback was the light-hearted counter-balance to the irascible Cosell, and millions looked forward to Monday nights when the two would do battle with one another on the air.

One of Dandy Don’s signatures came when the Monday night NFL offering game was safely out of hand. Meredith, a southern crooner who went to school at SMU, would belt out a farewell to the losing team , “Turn out  the lights, the party’s over. They say that all good things must end …”.

Well, it’s turn out the lights time for the University of Colorado football team under Dan Hawkins.

Enough will finally be enough.

The End of an Error?

The End of an Error?

Will the loss to Baylor be the final straw?

Will this be the game which finally brings to an end the all too frustrating Dan Hawkins’ era?

Well, “no” … and “yes”.

Dan Hawkins will be on the sidelines for the Texas Tech game next weekend. In all likelihood, Hawkins will be patrolling the sidelines at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln the day after Thanksgiving.

But that should be it.

Six weeks from now, the 31-25 loss to Baylor will be looked as being the turning point of the 2010 season.

A win over the Bears would have given the Buffs a 4-2 record at the midway point. With three winnable home games left on the calendar (plus a winnable game on the road against hapless Kansas), the Buffs would have been on their way to a winning season, or at least a 6-6 record and a bowl game. With his first winning season still a possibility, Dan Hawkins might have found a way to save his job for yet another year.

Gameday in Boulder

//posted 10.3.2010

The University of Colorado is not known for its tailgating. That is not to say, however, that fans in the Buff Nation do not enjoy their pre-game activities. On October 2, 2010, the stars were all aligned for a great day in Boulder. The Georgia Bulldogs were in town, just the second team from the Southeast Conference to ever venture into Folsom Field. The weather was ideal 75 degrees under mostly sunny skies, with a 5:00 p.m. kickoff ready-made for an afternoon of celebration.

It all seemed predestined; preordained.

Colorado had come back from a 24-14 deficit to lead Georgia in the fourth quarter, 29-27.  The Buffs had the ball and the lead, and had taken almost nine minutes off of the fourth quarter clock in driving slowly, methodically – painfully – down the field. Yet just when it looked like Colorado might take the ball down for a game-clinching touchdown, the Buffs stalled.

A missed 52-yard field goal gave the ball back to Georgia at the Bulldogs’ 35-yard line. Over 3 1/2 minutes remained in the game, with one of the premier field goal kickers in the game, Blair Walsh, patrolling the Bulldog sideline, ready to take the field to give Georgia a hard-fought 30-29 victory.
