Utah 42, Colorado 35

//posted 11.25.2012

Colorado completed its worst season in school history, and first season ever in Folsom without a victory, in a 42-35 season-ending loss to Utah.

With the loss, the Buffs fell to 1-11 for the 2012 season, the first 11-loss season in 123 years of college football at the University of Colorado. The Buffs finished 0-6 in games played in Boulder, the first winless season at home since 1920, and the first season with nothing but losses at home since the Buffs posted 0-2 home record in 1891.

A 23-point underdog, the Buffs stayed close to the Utes throughout, even taking the lead for much of the third quarter, before falling to a 22-point Utah fourth-quarter comeback. Colorado out-gained Utah on the afternoon, 418 yards to 336, and had more first downs that did the Utes (25-to-18). Five turnovers, though, including four interceptions thrown by starter Nick Hirschman, condemned the Buffs to an off-season of national ridicule.

— September 8th – at Arizona State          Arizona State 33, Colorado 14 — No, there is no such thing as a good loss (especially after taking a 14-0 lead in the first quarter). But is there hope for the rest of the season? The Arizona State Sun Devils shook off early mistakes and a 14-0 deficit to defeat the Colorado Buffaloes, 33-14. ASU quarterback Rudy Carpenter completed 19 of 37 passes for 269 yards and three touchdowns as the Sun Devils dominated the last three quarters of the game. A …

— October 26th – Boulder           No. 21 Colorado 37, Texas Tech 13 — Texas Tech quarterback Kliff Kingsbury came to Boulder as the nation’s leader in pass completions, attempts, yards passing and touchdowns. Kingsbury left town with a sore arm, no touchdowns, and a loss, as the Colorado defense rose to the occasion in leading the Buffs to a convincing 37-13 win. Kingsbury did get his yards, 268 in all, but on 36-of-65 passing and no touchdowns. The Red Raider quarterback had been intercepted only six …

  — September 2nd – at Denver           Colorado State 28, No. 23 Colorado 24 — The third and (at the time) final edition of the Rocky Mountain Showdown produced a close, intense game the promoters had hoped for from the beginning. The 1998 and 1999 Mile High Stadium showcases had resulted in routs, but the 2000 game between Colorado and Colorado State remained in doubt all afternoon, with the CSU Rams coming from ten points down to defeat the Buffs, 28-24. Colorado State senior quarterback Matt Newton had a career day, …

— Preseason – 2000 — Looking forward to the 2000 Colorado football season, the proverbial glass could be seen as either being half empty or half full. On the positive side, the Buffs had played inspired football the second half of the 1999 season, a 7-5 campaign. Colorado endured close losses to two top ten teams, Kansas State and Nebraska, before mauling Boston College in the Insight.com Bowl. Head coach Gary Barnett spoke of how the players had “bought into” the system the second half of his first season, and …

  — A Good Loss While the Buffs and their fans were still mourning the lost opportunity of the final moments of the Nebraska game, some good did come from the loss.  Nebraska had come into the game against Colorado ranked third in the Bowl Championship Series standings, behind only undefeated Florida State and Virginia Tech.  The Cornhuskers needed a convincing win over the Buffs, along with a win over Texas in the Big 12 Championship game, to play for the national title.  The narrow escape from Boulder virtually eliminated …

— October 23rd – at Iowa State           Colorado 16, Iowa State 12 — One week after failing in every facet of the game against Texas Tech, the Colorado Buffaloes responded with sufficient resolve to hold off Iowa State, 16-12. In defeating the Cyclones for the 16th consecutive time, the Buffs gave Gary Barnett his first road win as the head coach at the University of Colorado. But it did not come easily. Substituting for Mike Moschetti, who was held out of the contest due to a concussion, redshirt freshman quarterback Zac …

— October 9th – Boulder           Colorado 46, Missouri 39 (OT) — It took four long hours, but Ben Kelly finally put an end to what he had started. Colorado’s all-everything cornerback/kick returner opened the Missouri game with a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. In overtime, after a game which was a roller coaster of emotion, Kelly intercepted a pass by Missouri quarterback Kirk Farmer to preserve a 46-39 overtime win for the Buffs. Sandwiched between Kelly’s heroic plays, the Folsom Field crowd of 48,674 saw a little bit of …
