When the Associated Press poll came out the weekend after the Colorado win over Texas game, in the Big 12 championship game, the Buffs had moved up from #9 in the polls to No. 4.  Ahead of the Buffs were unanimous No. 1 Miami, No. 2 Tennessee (up from No. 5 after defeating then No. 2 Florida), and No. 3 Oregon.  Just behind the Buffs at No. 5 was Nebraska.  In the Bowl Championship Series …

— 2001 – National and Big 12 Recap — The Miami Hurricanes won the 2001 national championship, doing so in convincing fashion.  The Hurricanes, under first-year head coach Larry Coker, finished the season 12-0, the nation’s only undefeated team. Miami capped its unblemished season with a 37-14 demolition of Nebraska in the Rose Bowl. Finding a worthy opponent for Miami to play in the Rose Bowl was left for the Bowl Championship Series computers, and – arguably – the computers failed to live up to the challenge. Nebraska, despite not …

— October 21st – at Kansas           Kansas 23, Colorado 15 — Any delusions Buff fans had that 1-5 Colorado was not a bad football team, but really a good football team which had beaten down by an overpowering early-season schedule, came to a crashing end as 3-3 Kansas handed the Buffs a 23-15 setback. Running back David Winbush, who had set a CU record for opposing rushers with a 268-yard effort in 1998, accounted for 181 yards of total offense as the Buffs once again found a way to lose. — Preseason – 2000 — Looking forward to the 2000 Colorado football season, the proverbial glass could be seen as either being half empty or half full. On the positive side, the Buffs had played inspired football the second half of the 1999 season, a 7-5 campaign. Colorado endured close losses to two top ten teams, Kansas State and Nebraska, before mauling Boston College in the Insight.com Bowl. Head coach Gary Barnett spoke of how the players had “bought into” the system the second half of his first season, and …

Preseason – 1999 For Colorado to be successful in 1999, a number of players would have to rise above their 1998 performances. Mike Moschetti would return at quarterback, and was primed to have a banner year. Including the Aloha Bowl, Moschetti had 2,334 yards passing in 1998, with 19 touchdowns and only seven interceptions. The incumbent starter also impressed the new coaching staff with his intangibles – “The kinda guy you want next to you in a foxhole”, said new head coach Gary Barnett. Much of Moschetti’s success, though, …

  — October 24th – at Kansas           Kansas 33, No. 17 Colorado 17 — After committing only two penalties against Texas Tech, the Colorado Buffaloes resorted to familiar form for the 1998 season, committing 12 penalties against Kansas. The penalties, along with four turnovers and still more injuries (including key injuries to running back Marlon Barnes and quarterback Mike Moschetti), helped the Kansas Jayhawks upset 17th-ranked Colorado in Lawrence, 33-17. All phases of the game went dark for CU in the night sky in Lawrence. The Buffs’ defense, which had held …

— September 5th – at Denver           Colorado 42, No. 15 Colorado State 14 — Ralphie IV, only 16 months old and a mere 500 pounds, made her debut as the Buffs’ mascot before a crowd of 76,036 in a sold-out Mile High Stadium and a national television audience in the first-ever college football game at Mile High Stadium. The young buffalo looked small and unsure as she made her initial run, but came through nonetheless. The same could be said for the young Colorado Buffaloes. Only 40 of the 102 …
