October 2nd - at Missouri Missouri 17, Colorado 9
Missouri quarterback Brad Smith generated just enough offense to lead Missouri to a win over Colorado in the Big 12 conference opener for both teams, 17-9. Pre-season All-American Smith passed for 186 yards and ran for 76 more in leading the Tigers to their first win in six tries against a Gary Barnett-coached Buff squad.
Statistically, the Tigers dominated, holding the ball for ten minutes longer than the Buffs, and out-gaining Colorado, 415-254. But Missouri couldn’t capitalize, missing three field goals and suffering 70 yards in penalties, including an offensive pass interference call which negated a touchdown late in the first half.
Missouri and Smith started out well, scoring on an 80-yard drive to start the game. The Buffs countered with a long drive of their own, but had to settle for a 21-yard Mason Crosby field goal to cut the lead to 7-3 late in the first quarter. After a 45-yard field goal by Missouri kicker Joe Tantarelli upped the Tiger advantage to 10-3, a four-yard touchdown run by Bobby Purify cut the lead to 10-9, with the Tigers retaining the lead after the extra point attempt was blocked.

September 4th – Boulder Colorado 27, Colorado State 24
A pitch from Colorado State quarterback Justin Holland to running back Tristan Walker was stopped at the Colorado three-yard line by defensive backs J.J. Billingsley and Lorenzo Sims as time expired, preserving a wild 27-24 Buff win. The frenetic finish, before a record Folsom Field crowd of 54,954, gave Colorado head coach Gary Barnett and his players something other than scandal to talk about for the first time in 2004.
The game started out about as well as the Buffs could have hoped. Colorado scored on its opening drive, a one-yard plunge by senior running back Bobby Purify. Junior quarterback Joel Klatt scored from a yard out on the Buffs’ second drive, giving the Buffs an opening quarter 14-0 lead. The lead was up to 17-0 before CSU quarterback Justin Holland connected with tight end Matt Bartz 23 seconds before halftime to make the score at the break 17-7/
The second half witnessed the pendulum of emotion swing back and forth between the two benches. Colorado State climbed back into the contest, tying the score at 17-all with a 26-yard field goal by Jeff Babcock early in the fourth quarter. The…

September 13th - Boulder Washington State 47, No. 17 Colorado 26
Washington State scored early and often, cruising to a 47-26 thrashing of Colorado before 48,146 disbelieving Buff fans.
The Cougars scored 20 first quarter points, then posted 24 more in the third quarter to squelch any hopes of a Colorado comeback. In mauling the Buffs, Washington State became the first opposing team to post over 45 points in Boulder in twenty years.
The carnage started early. Quarterback Matt Kegel hit Sammy Moore on a 74-yard bomb to put Washington State up 7-0 less than five minutes in. A three-yard touchdown pass from Joel Klatt to Joe Klopfenstein brought the Buffs to within 7-6 (the extra point attempt was blocked), but two long plays padded the Cougars’ lead. A 77-yard touchdown pass, coupled with a 41-yard interception return for a score gave Washington State a 20-6 lead after one quarter.
The second quarter witnessed the Buffs make a small comeback. Sophomore quarterback Erik Greenberg, substituting for an injured Joel Klatt, connected with Derek McCoy from 46 yards out, bringing the Buffs to within seven at 20-13, but the Buffs were not to score again until the score was up to 44-13.…

September 6th - Boulder No. 24 Colorado 16, UCLA 14
A crowd of 48,534 helped the home team christen the newly renovated Folsom Field stadium with a hard-fought 16-14 win over UCLA.
Quarterback Joel Klatt provided the Buff faithful with a late fourth quarter drive for the second consecutive week, leading Colorado to a 2-0 record for the first time in five years. On this occasion, Klatt hit sophomore tight end Joe Klopfenstein on a six-yard touchdown pass with 2:15 to play, capping the 63-yard game-winning drive.
After posting – and surrendering – over 500 yards of total offense the week before in the CSU game, the Colorado/UCLA game proved to be a defensive struggle.
The Buffs started out on top with a score late in the first quarter, on a one-yard Bobby Purify run, capping an 11-play, 98-yard drive. The Bruins needed only a one play drive to cover 42 yards for a touchdown early in the second quarter, tying the game on a Drew Olson to Craig Bragg pass. The Buffs regained the lead in the last minute of the half, as freshman placekicker Mason Crosby made his first career field goal from 40 yards out to give the Buffs a 10-7…

August 30th – at Denver Colorado 42, No. 23 Colorado State 35
Sophomore quarterback Joel Klatt was the unlikely hero in leading Colorado to a 42-35 win over its in-state rival, Colorado State, in the 2003 season-opener for both teams.
Prior to completing 21-of-34 passes for 402 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions against the Rams, Klatt’s career numbers were as follows: a total of three passes, completing none. Yet before 76,219 rain-soaked fans at Invesco Field and a national television audience on ESPN, Klatt out-performed the Rams’ senior quarterback, Bradlee Van Pelt.
After CSU took a 7-0 first quarter lead, Colorado erupted for 28 second quarter points. Bobby Purify tied the score with a six-yard run, but the Rams quickly jumped back out on top with a 32-yard Van Pelt touchdown pass. The remainder of the quarter belonged to Joel Klatt. The former walk-on connected with Derek McCoy for an 82-yard score, then gave the Buffs their first lead when D.J. Hackett turned an acrobatic catch of a Klatt pass at the two-yard line into a touchdown. Colorado took a 28-14 halftime lead when Klatt hit John Donahoe from 45 yards out with just 29 seconds remaining.

Black Friday
After the hoopla of bowl season winds down, January is supposed to be a relatively quiet time for college football fans. Recruiting is in full swing, and there is a great deal of information for the truly faithful to digest and debate. But for most fans, January is the lull before February signing day, after which thoughts of the team are mostly shelved until fall.
For the second time in four years, though, January was an active time for Colorado football. In 1999, January brought the surprise defection of head coach Rick Neuheisal to Washington. January, 2003, brought defections of a different sort.
On Friday, January 10th, the Colorado football program lost half of its backfield.
First, record-breaking junior Chris Brown announced that he would forego his senior year at Colorado and would make himself eligible for the 2003 NFL draft. Several hours later, sophomore Marcus Houston asked for and received his unconditional release from his scholarship.
Neither of the announcements were completely unexpected.
Brown had accomplished all he had to accomplish in a Colorado uniform. Despite maintaining during the 2002 campaign that he would return for 2003 as a Buff, there were a number of unknowns for…

November 29th - @ Nebraska No. 13 Colorado 28, Nebraska 13
Freshman tailback Brian Calhoun, inserted into the Colorado backfield due to injuries to Chris Brown and Bobby Purify, ran for 137 yards to lead the Buffs to a 28-13 win over Nebraska in Lincoln.
Senior fullback Brandon Drumm scored twice as Colorado won for the eighth time in nine games to claim the outright Big 12 North title. “When it counted, we wanted to win the Big 12 (North) title outright,” said Gary Barnett. “We didn’t want to share it. We wanted to win it in Lincoln, which is very difficult to do.”
Cornerback Phil Jackson intercepted a Jammal Lord pass at the Colorado 13-yard line on Nebraska’s second drive of the game. The Buffs followed up the turnover with a seven-play, 87-yard drive, culminated in a 40-yard touchdown pass from Robert Hodge to Derek McCoy five minutes into the contest. The Colorado 7-0 lead held up until the second quarter, when Lord hit Matt Herian for 80 yards and a tie score. Later in the second, kicker Dale Endorf gave the Cornhuskers their first lead of the game, 10-7, with a 33-yard field goal.
On the Buffs’ first…

November 16th - Boulder No. 17 Colorado 41, Iowa State 27
Bobby Purify, subbing for an injured Chris Brown, ran for 174 yards to lead Colorado to a Big 12 North title-clinching win over Iowa State, 41-27.
Purify scored on a five-yard run with 1:53 remaining to cap a six-play, 80-yard drive to finally seal the win for the Buffs in a game which witnessed six lead changes.
Both teams scored on their opening drives, with Pat Brougham connecting from 43 yards out for the Buffs, while tailback Michael Wagner scored from five yards out to give Iowa State a 7-3 lead. In the second quarter, Colorado posted two touchdowns around a 50-yard touchdown pass from Seneca Wallace to Lance Young. First, quarterback Robert Hodge hit receiver D.J. Hackett for an eight-yard touchdown. Then, with 2:45 remaining before halftime, Chris Brown scored from five yards out to give the Buffs a 17-14 edge at the break.
Brown, who would carry the ball 25 times for 127 yards, left the game midway through the third quarter with a bruised sternum and did not return. Iowa State briefly regained the lead with a one-yard Joe Woodley run, but when the extra point kick was…
