Missed field goals, turnovers, and poor execution in the red zone – issues which had plagued the Buffs all season – turned an otherwise close game into a rout, as No. 24 Washington State defeated Colorado, 27-3. The Cougars out-gained the Buffs, 481 yards to 323, with WSU quarterback Luke Falk going 27-for-35 for 199 yards and a touchdown before being knocked out of the game late in the third quarter.

Cade Apsay, making his first career start, went 26-for-40 for 238 yards, but was intercepted twice, was forced to fall on low snaps, and was sacked three times. Nelson Spruce collected 10 catches for 120 yards, and Phillip Lindsay had 16 carries for 78 yards, but none of the Buffs could come through when it mattered most. The Buffs went 5-of-16 on third downs, and 1-of-5 on fourth downs, falling to 4-8, 1-7 on the season.

Memo to Colorado athletic director Rick George:

First, thanks for sticking around, and taking your name out of the running for the vacant AD job at Illinois. We know that you are an Illinois alumnus, and that you once described the head position at Illinois as your “dream job”. We understand how strong the temptation would be to return to where your first loyalties were forged.

And yet you are sticking around Boulder to see what you have started seen through to a successful conclusion.

Thanks for that.

Second, can you see what you can do about moving the Colorado game at Washington State in 2017 to a new site?

I think I’ve got this figured out.

USC 27, Colorado 24

Colorado jumped out to a 17-6 halftime lead over heavily favored USC, but could not hold on, as the Trojans ran their all-time record over the Buffs to 10-0 with a 27-24 victory in Boulder.

Red-shirt freshman quarterback Cade Apsay, playing the final three quarters for an injured Sefo Liufau, went 18-for-23 for 128 yards and two touchdowns, but six sacks left the Buffs with a grand total of 59 rushing yards for the game.

Nelson Spruce added to his collection of records during Colorado’s 27-24 loss to USC.

With his 22nd touchdown reception, a nine-yarder in the second quarter, Spruce tied Scotty McKnight for the all-time lead in that category. Spruce long ago became the all-time leader at Colorado in receptions (now up to 279, which is also a Pac-12 record) and reception yards (3,116), with the touchdown record the last of the major records to obtain.

In addition, Spruce picked up the Buffalo Heart Award after the game. The award, presented “by the fans behind the bench”, has been given out since 1998. The award is coordinated by the same group of fans, selecting the player they feel best represents what it means to be a CU Buffalo.

The recognition and the touchdown record were all fine and good with Spruce, but it wasn’t enough.

“I was talking about this week getting that signature win and that would be my memorable moment here and we were right there,” said Spruce. “But the story of this season, we are just not able to finish. So being my last game this was definitely one that I wanted even that much more so it does hurt a little bit.”

Actually, it hurts a lot.
