Don’t Forget About Us

While Colorado is expected to sign 18-20 new Buffs on Signing Day, there are a trio of players who have signed on with CU, but were not in uniform this fall.

Wide receiver Tony Brown comes to Boulder as a junior college transfer who committed to the team last September, while defensive lineman Jalen Sami and offensive lineman Casey Roddick signed on as grey-shirts as part of the CU Recruiting Class of 2017, delaying their enrollment until this January, giving them time to bulk up without losing a year of eligibility.

Their bios …

Tony Brown – WR – Junior college

Just the facts … Committed June 19th … Brown is a 6’1″, 187-pound wide receiver from La Mirada, California, who comes to Colorado by way of a two-year stint at Texas Tech  Rivals 2015 bio  Scout 2015 bio

What others say about Brown … A member of the Recruiting Class of 2015, Brown was considered to be a three-star prospect by Rivals, and a four-star prospect by Scout. Rivals considered Brown to be the No. 67 wide receiver prospect in the nation, while Scout had Brown as the No. 30 wide receiver in the nation, and the No. 216 overall national prospect.

Brown had other offers from … over a dozen other schools, including Colorado, UCLA, Utah and Washington from the Pac-12. Other suitors included Nebraska, Purdue and Iowa State. Brown took an official visit to Boulder on December 5, 2014, but committed to Texas Tech on December 18th. Brown was recruited to Lubbock by Red Raider assistant coach Darrin Chiaverini.

Brown’s past and future … Brown did not take a red-shirt season at Texas Tech. As a freshman in 2015, Brown had 14 catches for 250 yards and a touchdown. As a sophomore, he played in 11 games and caught 13 passes for 128 yards.  Brown has already enrolled at Colorado, and will have two years to play two.

In his own words … “I did talk to some other colleges, too, but Colorado was always the main one because of Coach Chiaverini,” Brown said shortly after his arrival in Boulder on August 30th. “When I got here, he was pretty excited and I was pretty excited. It felt like we were back at Texas Tech but now I am wearing black and gold. The connection clicked again.”

Jalen Sami – DL – Grey-shirt

Just the facts … Committed January 30th … Sami is a 6’6″, 320-pound defensive tackle from Vista Ridge high in Colorado Springs …  Rivals bio 247 Sports bio

What others say about Sami … Sami was rated as a two-star prospect by Rivals and 247 Sports. At 247 Sports, Sami was listed as the No. 13 player overall out of the state of Colorado, and the No. 143 defensive lineman in the nation. Sami was a first-team all-conference and second-team all-state selection in the fall of 2016.

“It’s been a long time waiting to start. I’ve been eager,” Sami told CUSportsNation.com recently. “I just got back from Hawaii from training for a month and a half. I lost some weight, got stronger, and I’m trying to prepare myself to get ready for CU.”

During Sami’s high school senior season, he stood at 6-foot-6 and about 315/320-pounds. He’s gotten a lot stronger, and because of that, has bulked up to about 340-pounds.

“Coach [Jim] Jeffcoat wants me at like 330. So I’m trying to drop 5-10 more pounds,” Sami said.

Sami had other offers from … only from Northern Colorado and Colorado State-Pueblo, at least until Colorado took an interest. Sami received a late offer from Mississippi, but decided to stick with the first Division 1 school to offer him a scholarship.

Casey Roddick – OL – Grey-shirt

Just the facts … From the Recruiting Class of 2017; agreed to take a grey-shirt and enroll as part of the Class of 2018 … Roddick is an offensive lineman from Ventura, California, and was 6’4″, 342-pounds when he committed on February 1, 2017. Rivals bio 247 Sports bio

What others have to say about Roddick … Roddick is considered to be a three-star prospect by Rivals and 247 Sports. Rivals rates Roddick as the No. 33 offensive guard in the nation, and the No. 82 player overall out of the state of California. At 247 Sports, Roddick was listed as the No. 37 offensive guard in the nation, and the No. 74 player out of the state of California.

Roddick reports he is now in the 6-foot-5, 355-pound range. He will need to continue to lose some weight before playing for the Buffaloes, but Roddick does move surprisingly well for his size. He was named both the Ventura County and Marmonte League Offensive Lineman of the Year in 2016.

Roddick had other offers from … most notably, California. Roddick was a Bear commit since November 20th, but de-committed on January 14th. Roddick also had offers from Oregon, Utah, and Oregon State from the Pac-12. Other offers came from Iowa State, San Diego State, Fresno State, UNLV and Hawai’i.

In his own words … “I got to spend time with my family and got to workout a lot,” Roddick told Rivals.com when asked about his experience gray-shirting. “I also got to work, too, which was nice to establish some income. But mainly I have been spending time with my little brother and my older brother, my siblings, so it has been a good experience. I am definitely excited to put the pads back on, though.

“I was trying to trim down while bulking up at the same time. It was more about improving my physique,” he explained. “I did the best of my ability to improve there. I wanted to lose 15 pounds, and I did that, so I am pretty happy.”

  2. I like all three of them. A lot. Roddick to the offensive line is great when you look at the over all 2017 OL Class.

    Moretti………………4 star
    Polley……………….4 star
    Sherman………………3 star
    Paige………………..3 star
    Roddick………………3 star

Roddick will be a Frosh and the other 4 will be RSF

    Nice

And you look at the Sophs and Juniors.

THIS COULD BE THE BEST MIGHTY BUFF OLINE IN MANY A YEAR

    BUFFS.

NOTE: The WR group will be the best in many many years. The talent in this group is amazing. I believe that I really do. (Play the talent, Play the talent, Play the talent)

Note 2: Did you know there are 27 RSF including scholarship and walk on players. Meaning out of the 105 that will be on the roster in the fall, approximately 45-50 will be RSF or Frosh.
