Stoppin’ by for a Visit – December 10th

The number of known visitors grew by two on Thursday, with two running back prospects added to the list. One is Ryan Lewis out of Sammamish, Washington, who is being recruited by Colorado as a cornerback. The other is a name known to Buff fans, Terrence Crowder, out of Galena Park, Texas. Crowder has been a CU commit since June, and his bio can be found below.

Then, on Friday, a ninth visitor was disclosed, Trevor Stevens, a tight end prospect from Friendswood, Texas.

There are also reports – unconfirmed by either Rivals or Scout (which still has the official visit list at six) – that four-star cornerback prospect Marcus Rios could be taking an official visit to Colorado this weekend. Again, this is as of yet is unconfirmed, but I’ve posted his bio below, just to get you salavating about a weekend in which both Marcus Rios and Yuri Wright commit to becoming Buffs (ahh, dare to dream!).

Weather forecast for the weekend: sunny, with highs near 50 degrees. Flatirons (and the CU men’s basketball team vs. Wyoming!) – do your stuff!

Here are the players reported to be on the official list for this weekend (December 10th):

Marcus Rios – CB – Just the facts … Rios is a cornerback prospect from Elk Grove, California. Rios is 6’0″, 170-pounds. Rios is considered a four-star player by both Rivals and Scout. Rivals has Rios listed as the No. 20 cornerback in the nation, with Rios coming in at No. 244 on the Rivals 250 list of all players in this year’s recruiting Class. Scout lists Rios as the No. 17 cornerback nationally. Rios has other offers from … Everywhere. Rios had been a commit to Boise State since March, but de-committed in October, setting about a flurry of activity. Rios has offers from most of the Pac-12 schools, including both Oregon and Washington schools, as well as Utah, UCLA, and Arizona. Rios also has an offers from Nebraska, and the Cornhuskers think of themselves as the favorites for Rios’ services (so what else is new?). According to Rivals, the Buffs’ main competition comes from Oregon, UCLA and Nebraska, while Scout sees it as a three-way race between UCLA, Arizona State and UCLA (the three schools to which Rios has already taken official visits). The fascination for the Buff Nation is not only that Rios is a high quality recruit in an area of need, but that Rios is graduating in December. Rios can be in Boulder for spring practices – and count as a 2011 Class member, freeing up the coaches to sign another player in February. “We had Colorado Utah, and Nebraska in this week,” Marcus’ father, Richard, told InsideTheUtes.com last Friday. “Nebraska is coming by his school again today as well. Cal and Notre Dame will be by early next week and then Utah will be in again … Making sure we can find a good fit for him and getting to school soon (is the priority). Marcus graduates in two weeks so there isn’t a lot of time left for us to decide what to do. The coaching changes that are going on all over the place are really throwing a wrench into everything, but we’re working through it to find a place that makes sense.”

Trevor Stevens – TE –Just the factsStevens is a tight end prospect from Friendswood, Texas. Stevens is 6’4″, 236-pounds. Stevens is considered a three-star player by Scout, but only a two-star prospect by Rivals. Scout has Stevens ranked as the No. 61 tight end in the nation. Stevens has other offers from … only a handful of schools. Stevens lists Boise State and Iowa State from BCS conferences (with Boise State moving to the Big East next fall). The other schools Stevens has offers from indicate that his reported 3.9 GPA is no joke – Brown, Harvard, and Cornell. While not showing any other offers, Stevens has received interest from schools like Texas A&M, Rice, and Texas Tech. Colorado will be Stevens’ first official visit, with Boise State apparently the Buffs’ greatest competitor for the tight end’s services. “I want to take official visits to Boise State, Harvard, Colorado and Iowa State,” Stevens told BroncoCountry.com in October. Boise State is like #6 right now in the BCS Standings. That’s where you go if you want to play big-time football. I know they have a lot of fan support up there in Idaho and they have a great offense too.”

Ryan Lewis – RB/CB – Just the facts … Lewis is a running back and a cornerback prospect from Sammamish, Washington (if that sounds familiar, that is the same hometown – but a different high school – as No. 1 quarterback prospect from the Class of 2010, Jake Heaps, who announced this past week that he would be transferring from BYU). Lewis is 6’0″, 185-pounds, and runs a reported 4.45 in the 40. Lewis is not rated by Rivals, but is considered a two-star cornerback prospect by Scout. Lewis has other offers from … no one else. Considering Lewis’ size and speed, it is somewhat surprising that Lewis has no other offers. Lewis has drawn interest from a number of other Pac-12 schools, including both Washington schools and Utah, as well as West Virginia. Still, as of the date of his visit to Boulder, Lewis’ only scholarship offer from a BCS school is from Colorado.

Christian Powell – FBJust the factsPowell is a fullback prospect from Upland, California. Powell is 6’2″, 250-pounds, and also plays defensive tackle. Powell is considered to be a three-star prospect by both Rivals and Scout. Rivals has Powell rated as its No. 57 “athlete”, while Scout ranks Powell as the No. 9 fullback prospect in the nation. Powell has other offers from… Nebraska, Texas A&M, and Washington, and has attended camps at both UCLA and USC. Colorado will be Powell’s fourth official visit, having already taken in the sites in Lincoln, Seattle, and College Station. While the Buffs’ pro-style offense, which is in desperate need of a fullback, would seemingly be a draw for a player like Powell, it sounds as if the Buffs have their work cut out for them. “I would say Washington and Texas A&M are my top two,” Powell told Scout.com a week ago. “I told the Washington coaches I was really interested in them and that I that their program would be a good fit for me, but that I wanted to take all my trips before making a final decision.”  Rivals bio  Scout bio

Donta Abron – RB – Just the facts … Abron is a running back prospect from Upland, California. Abron is 5’9″, 180-pounds, and runs in the same backfield as Christian Powell, above. Abron is considered to be a two-star prospect by both Scout and Rivals. Abron is listed as the No. 110 running back in the nation by Scout. Abron has other offers from … hardly anyone, though Colorado reportedly extended an offer to Abron back in June. The only other listed offers for Abron are from Idaho, New Mexico State, and Stoney Brook. (Stoney Brook?). Despite the low number of offers, Abron did have some impressive senior numbers, rushing for 1,668 yards and 32 touchdowns in 12 games as a senior. Rivals.com recruiting analyst Adam Gorney categorizes him as a “tough, sturdy runner”. Rivals bio  Scout bio

Marques Mosley – WR/CB – Just the facts … Mosley is an athlete from Upland, California. Mosley is 6’1, 174-pounds, who scored nine touchdowns on offense, and recorded 59 tackles on defense. Mosley has not been rated by either Rivals or Scout. Colorado is reportedly recruiting Mosley as a cornerback and kick returner. Mosley has other offers from… Nebraska and Oregon State. Mosley took an official visit to Lincoln for the Northwestern game (a Cornhusker loss), but came away impressed. Think Nebraska fans don’t know their football? Here’s what the Big Red Report had to say about Mosley’s visit: “One of the things that Mosley said impressed him the most was the tunnel walk. He thought the team was immediately behind him and the other recruits, but it was just them when they were walking through. ‘Oh man, the tunnel walk was nuts,’ said Mosley. ‘I thought the team was behind us because they were screaming at us, they knew our names and knew that we were all recruits.’ ” Rivals bio  Scout bio

Yuri Wright – DB – Just the facts … Wright is a cornerback prospect from Ramsey, New Jersey. Wright is 6’2″, 180-pounds, and has been one of the most discussed recruits this cycle. Wright is considered to be a four-star prospect by both Rivals and Scout. Rivals ranks Wright as the No. 3 cornerback in the nation, and the No. 57 prospect in the nation overall. Scout, meanwhile, rates Wright as the No. 5 cornerback nationally. Wright has other offers from … everywhere. From Auburn to Wisconsin, from California to Virginia Tech, Wright has offers. Wright’s top seven are reported to be Cal, Colorado, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Michigan, Notre Dame, and Rutgers. While home-state Rutgers has been working on Wright for some time, boyhood favorite Michigan and Notre Dame and Cal seem to be the Buffs’ main competition. Former CU assistant coach Ashley Ambrose has been courting Wright for Cal, and reportedly has been doing a good job of it. Still, Cal was supposed to be Wright’s December 9th official visit, then it was December 16th … and now Wright is reported to have a trip to Notre Dame scheduled for next weekend.  Rivals bio  Scout bio

Kyle Kelley – DE – Arizona Commit – Just the facts … Kelley is a defensive end prospect from Irvine, California. Kelley is 6’3, 205-pounds, and runs a 4.82 in the 40. Kelley is considered by Rivals to be a four-star prospect, the No. 13 defensive end in the nation, and the No. 205 player on the Rivals 250. Scout lists Kelley as a three-star prospect, the 41st-best defensive end nationally. Kelley has other offers from … a number of other schools, most significantly Arizona.   Kelley committed to the Wildcats in July, but has been looking around since Mike Stoops was fired in October. Kelley remains on the Arizona board, but he has interest from schools other than Colorado, including both Washington schools, Utah, UCLA, Arizona State, and Florida. Rivals bio  Scout bio

Josh Tupou – OL/DL – Just the facts … Tupou is a offensive lineman prospect from Buena Park, California. Tupou is 6’4″, 302-pounds, and is projected as either a guard in college … or a defensive tackle. Tupou has not been rated by Rivals, but Scout has Tupou as a two-star prospect as a defensive tackle, the No. 98 defensive tackle in the country. Tupou has other offers from … No other BCS conference schools. Tupou does have offers from Hawai’i, San Jose State, Nevada, and UNLV. Tupou has already taken official visits to San Jose State and Nevada, and does not currently have any official visits listed after his trip to Colorado this weekend. Rivals bio  Scout bio

Taking an official visit, already committed to Colorado …

TERRENCE CROWDER – RB

Just the facts… Committed June 13th … Crowder is a running back prospect from Galena Park, Texas. Crowder is 5’10″, 212-pounds, and runs a 4.48 in the 40.

What others say about Crowder… Crowder is rated as a two-star prospect by Rivals, and a three-start prospect by Scout.  Crowder is listed as the No. 96 running back in the nation by Scout.  Just five carries into his senior season, Terrence Crowder tore his ACL, and was lost for the season. Crowder had his surgery in September, and began rehab in October. Crowder will likely be limited in his participation in fall camp, and will likely, barring injuries to other backs, be a red-shirt candidate in 2012.

Crowder had other offers from … only a handful of schools. Crowder did have scholarship offers from Texas-San Antonio, North Texas, and Louisiana-Lafayette, though Crowder’s coach believed that other offers were imminent. “He had some other offers and he is still getting a lot of attention from some of the Big 12 schools without a formal offer,” Ray Zepeda, Crowder’s high school coach, told BuffStampede.com this past summer. “I know that Nevada was real interested in him as well. He is a kid that rushed for 1,300 yards and 15 touchdowns. We have a pretty good amount of coaches that come through our campus each year but in particular, we had quite a few this spring come through and I think that they were very pleased with what they saw in Terrence, both on film and in person. His stock is rising. I think that Colorado got in there early to their benefit and I think that has a lot to do with the decision that he has made. I think that he would have seen quite a few more offers come through for him, especially as we got closer to his senior season.”

  1. I’m a Garden Stater so it caught my attention when I read on-line this morning that Yuri Wright apparently/allegedly was not blown away by his official visit. He reportedly Tweeted (do high school kids really need Twitter accounts – does anyone?) while in Boulder that he was pretty bored and looking forward to his trip home the following day.

  2. Nico Siragusa was hoping to spend last weekend in Boulder, checking out the Colorado Buffaloes.

Instead, he was home in California.

“I had (an official visit) planned but didn’t end up taking it,” the three-star offensive line recruit said. “I don’t know what happened, but I really want to come out there.”

Siragusa said a miscommunication between himself and Colorado line coach Steve Marshall led to him not coming to Boulder. Yet, the 6-foot-6, 300-pound star from Mater Dei Catholic High School said he’s still very interested in CU.

“I like them a lot,” he said. “Eventually I will (take the official visit).”

Siragusa currently has nine offers — in addition to CU, Fresno State, New Mexico State, Oregon State, San Diego State, San Jose State, SMU, UNLV and Washington State have offered.

Asked if he has a top-five list, he said, “Everybody has a chance right now.”

Colorado was one of the first schools to give Siragusa an offer and he’s been impressed with the Buffs ever since.

“I like how coach (Jon Embree) is building them up,” he said. “I want to be part of a program that used to be very good and he’s building them back up to where they used to be. I like that.”

So far, Siragusa has taken just one official visit, to Fresno State. He said he’s visiting San Diego State this weekend.
