(Boring) College Football Playoff logo announced

From USA Today … The College Football Playoff checked another item off its to-do list Monday, as fan voting chose the “golden football” as the official logo for the new event that will crown the Football Bowl Subdivision champion beginning in 2014.

The golden football logo earned 38% of a fan vote, besting choice No. 3 (a v-shaped golden logo that resembled an inverted wishbone that earned 25% of the vote) and choice No. 1, which featured a U.S. flag-inspired look but bore some resemblance to the NFL shield. Choice No. 1 got 24%.

Pac-12 Notes

Pac-12 and the NFL Draft

Jon Wilner at the San Jose Mercury News has broken down the last four NFL drafts with respect to draft picks from the Pac-12

Here is a link to the entire story.

Below are some of the more interesting findings:

The pick totals are from the 2009-13 drafts.

FIRST ROUND

USC: 6 Cal: 4 Colorado 2 (Nate Solder and Jimmy Smith): Oregon: 2 Stanford: 2 UCLA: 1 Utah: 1 Washington: 2 Arizona: 0 Arizona State: 0 Oregon State: 0 Washington State: 0

ALL ROUNDS

USC: 34 Cal: 20 Oregon: 19 Utah: 15 Oregon State: 14 Stanford: 14 Arizona: 10 UCLA: 10 Arizona State: 9 Colorado: 9 Washington: 7 Washington State: 3

WINS PER DRAFT PICK

The five-year win totals are for league games only. There’s too much variance in non-conference schedules and postseason matchups.

* Utah and Colorado are not included.

Washington: 2.7 wins per draft pick Stanford: 2.4 Arizona: 2.1 Arizona State: 2.1 Oregon: 2.1 UCLA: 1.9 Oregon State: 1.8 Washington State: 1.6 Cal: 1.0 USC: 0.8

(Note: If you wanted to count CU’s league wins in the past four years – 7 – compared to it’s number of …

November 17th – Boulder           Washington 38, Colorado 3

Colorado gave up five turnovers, spoiling its best defensive first half effort of the season, falling at home to Washington, 38-3. The Buffs, out-scored 302-96 in the first half in the first ten games of the season, trailed only 7-0 at halftime, before turnovers helped Washington turn a close game into a rout.

Washington quarterback Keith Price threw five touchdown passes to five different receivers on the afternoon, while Colorado tried three different quarterbacks, who finished a combined 10-for-23 for 51 yards and two interceptions.

Connor Wood was the first Buff quarterback to take a shot at the Washington defense. Wood, a sophomore, in the first start of his career, led the Buffs to a three-and-out on the first drive of the game, including a sack on third-and-nine. The Colorado defense, burned for 574 yards and 56 points by Arizona the week before, started out well, holding the Washington offense (thanks to a personal foul penalty) to a three-and-out as well.

Another three-and-out by the Colorado offense was then followed by a four-and-out by Washington – this time aided by an offensive pass interference penalty. Washington started its drive at the …

October 11th – Boulder          Arizona State 51, Colorado 17

Rashad Ross returned the second-half kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown to break open a close game and Taylor Kelly threw three scoring passes to tailback Marion Grice in Arizona State’s 51-17 victory over Colorado on Thursday night.

Grice caught touchdown throws of 37, 16 and 20 yards from Kelly, who threw for 308 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions thanks to a steady diet of successful screen passes. He also tucked it and ran for 67 yards through huge chunks of open space all night long.

Arizona State went for 593 yards of total offense, while Colorado spent most of the second half hovering around the Mendoza line of 200 yards of total offense, settling for 255 yards after gaining some yards late in the game when the contest was out of hand, and most of the black-out home crowd of 45,161 had headed for the exits.

The game started with a 21-yard pass from Buff quarterback Jordan Webb to freshman wide receiver Gerald Thomas, but that play proved to be the first quarter highlight for the Colorado offense. After being held to a three-and-out in its first …

Sac State 30, Colorado 28

September 8th – Boulder           Sacramento State 30, Colorado 28

Walk-on Sacramento State kicker Edgar Castenda was awarded a scholarship in the post-game locker room after his third field goal of the day, a 30-yarder as time expired, gave the Hornets a 30-28 victory over Colorado. With the loss, the Buffs, who had never played an FCS team (formerly 1-AA) in school history prior to 2006, fell to 1-2 against Big Sky Conference teams.

Sacramento State posted 466 yards of total offense against a Buff defense which had played well in the season opening loss to Colorado State. The Buff offense, led by Christian Powell’s 147 yards rushing and three touchdowns, had four scoring drives of 65 yards or longer, but was otherwise unproductive against a Hornet defense which surrendered 49 points to New Mexico State a week earlier.

The game started as well as any Buff fan, hoping to erase the memory of the 22-17 loss to Colorado State, could have expected. On the third play from scrimmage, freshman running back Christian Powell raced up the middle for a 64-yard touchdown. Only 1:12 into the game, the Buffs already had more rushing yards, 75, than they did in the …

September 1st – Denver          Colorado State 22, Colorado 17

Jim McElwain became the first Colorado State coach to win his debut in 42 years, as the Rams rallied past their arch rival for a 22-17 win over the Colorado Buffaloes.

Garret Grayson completed 14-of-21 passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns and Jared Roberts kicked two fourth-quarter field goals after the Rams had fallen behind 17-16. Grayson outdueled Kansas transfer Jordan Webb who was 22-of-41 for 187 yards and two touchdowns for the Buffaloes.

McElwain, the former offensive coordinator at defending national champion Alabama, became the first Rams coach to win his debut since Jerry Wampfler in 1970. None of other 12 Rams coaches who have faced Colorado had ever beaten the Buffs on their first try.

The game started much better for the Buffs than had the 2011 edition of the Rocky Mountain Showdown. The previous year, the Rams took the opening kickoff and smartly marched 80 yards for an opening touchdown. In this game, though, the Rams went three-and-out.

The Buffs, though, were not able to capitalize, though, going three-and-out as well. In a foreshadowing of how the afternoon would go for the Colorado offense, the Buffs actually …

Spring Practice Notes

April 16th

Jon Embree’s Post-Spring Comments

Worthy of re-printing in full here, Embree talked Monday about everything from the size of the Class of 2013 to playing freshmen to meeting fans’ expectations …

 On Recruiting

“Everybody’s out, they left yesterday. The two off the road this week are Eric [Bieniemy] and [Greg Brown], so they can get some things finished out this week from an offensive and defensive standpoint, then they’ll be out on the road. Coaches will all be in next week, but they’ll out off and on for the remainder of May.”

On When He Can Go On The Road And Recruit

“I can’t go out until December 1. I can phone call, so I’ll start on that phone calling from a recruiting standpoint over the next five or six weeks.”

On Junior Day

“Junior Day went well; I would imagine we will hear from some kids here. There were a couple kids in particular. There were seven kids that came, that it was good they got here, they made a great effort to get here, so we’ll see on that. We had kids coming in all last week, and really the week before because …

Colorado 48, Arizona 29

November 12th – Boulder          Colorado 48, Arizona 29

In the best offensive showing of the 11-game Jon Embree era, Colorado won it’s first-ever Pac-12 game in dominating Arizona, 48-29.

On a Senior Day when there was a chance that the 2011 Buffs would become the first Colorado team to fail to win a home game at Folsom Field, the Colorado seniors came up big. Senior running back Rodney Stewart had 24 carries for 181 yards and three touchdowns, while also contributing a touchdown passing. On the other end of that halfback pass for a score was senior quarterback Tyler Hansen, who went 16-for-26 for 213 yards and two touchdowns.

On a 57-degree afternoon with winds gusting as high as 62 mph, Colorado posted 500 yards of total offense for only the second time in 2011, while holding the opposition under 500 yards for the first time in six games. The Colorado defense, which had only four interceptions in the first ten games of the year, had three against Arizona quarterback Nick Foles.

While there was hope amongst the members of the Buff Nation that this would be the week that the lopsided losses would come to an end, Colorado …
