Julius Coates – DL – Junior College

De-committed December 6th … Tweet from Coates … “I have decided to decommit from The University of Colorado. I would like to thank Coach Tucker , Coach Brumbaugh and the rest of the staff in Boulder for this opportunity.”

Note … When Coates committed to Colorado two months ago, he was not rated by either service, and had offers from Western Kentucky, Akron, and New Mexico. After Coates committed in October, Coates received offers from Oregon, Nebraska, Arkansas, Maryland and Kansas State. He is now considered to be a three-star prospect by 247 Sports; a two-star prospect by Rivals.

Just the facts … Committed October 4th … Coates is 6’7″, 270-pound defensive end from Scooba, Mississippi, by way of East Mississippi Community College Rivals bio 247 Sports bio

Originally from Rockford, Ill., Coates played tight end as a freshman at Ellsworth Community College before transferring to East Mississippi Community College, where he has transitioned into more of a defensive player. He has recorded three sacks through six games as a sophomore.

Coates will have three years to play two, and is scheduled to enroll in January and be available for spring practices.

Coates had other offers from … a handful of schools, including Akron, New Mexico, and Western Kentucky. While that is not a particularly impressive list, defensive line is an area of immediate need for Colorado, so a 6’7″, 270-pound prospect who can be available to face Pac-12 competition in 2020 is welcome.

Antonio Alfano – DL

Just the facts … Committed November 4th … Alfano is a 6’4″, 285-pound defensive lineman from Colonia, New Jersey Rivals bio 247 Sports bio

What others say about Alfano … Alfano may be the highest-rated recruit in the history of the program. A member of the Recruiting Class of 2019, Alfano was rated as a five-star prospect by both Rivals and 247 Sports. At Rivals, Alfano was ranked as the No. 1 defensive end prospect in the country, the No. 1 overall recruit out of the state of New Jersey, and the No. 5 overall prospect in the nation. At 247 Sports, Alfano received similar marks – the No. 1 strongside defensive end in the country, the No. 1 player out of New Jersey, and the No. 1 overall prospect in the entire country.

Alfano enrolled early at Alabama (last January), but did not play a down for the Crimson Tide. He was with the team in September, but left in October due to a family issue. “Antonio’s grandmother recently fell very ill and is still fighting on life support,” his father Frankie Alfano explained on Twitter on Sept. 13. “He is very close with her. Since this illness took effect, Antonio has taken it very hard. He has not attended classes and practices.

Alabama head coach Nick Saban didn’t mince words about Alfano’s actions. “I just know that the guy basically quit,” Saban said in mid-September to AL.com. “He quit going to class. He quit coming here. We tried to encourage him. We tried to help him. We had tried to set up counseling sessions with him to help him every way we could. … But he didn’t respond to any of the things, so until he responds, you just have to assume the guy quit.”

Before his tribulations in Tuscaloosa, Alfano was expected to have an impact as a true freshman for Alabama. 247 Sports director of scouting Barton Simmons had this to say about Alfano:

There aren’t many pass rushers who play as true freshmen on Nick Saban’s defense, but there aren’t many five-stars with a college-ready frame and skill set quite like Alfano, either. At a position of need, the Crimson Tide landed the nation’s top overall player this cycle per the 247Sports rankings.

“I actually compare Antonio Alfano in some ways to Nick Bosa, who played nose guard for his high school,” Simmons said. “Quinnen Williams played nose for Alabama. I don’t know that Antonio Alfano steps in right away and is Quinnen Williams, but he certainly steps in right away and gives Alabama much-needed depth on the defensive front.

“Antonio Alfano is 6-foot-5, 285 pounds. The guy is a beast. He is on campus already. He can factor in on that defensive front right away. Whether he starts or not I don’t know, but he will be in the rotation is my expectation given how talented he is from a physical standpoint.”

Alfano has signed a financial aid agreement with Colorado, which is good, but not the final word. A Financial Aid Agreement is different from a Letter of Intent, as it binds the school, but not the player. Until Alfano actually enrolls at CU in January, he remains free to explore other options.

Coming to CU by way of the transfer portal, Alfano may have to sit out the 2020 season. Since he never played a down for the Crimson Tide, however, he may well receive a waiver from the NCAA, which would not only allow him to play in the 2020 season, but have four years to play four in Boulder.

Alfano had other offers from … pretty much every school in the country. Out of the Pac-12, Alfano had offers from Oregon, USC, Arizona State, UCLA, and Stanford. He also had offers from top programs such as Georgia, LSU, Penn State, Clemson, Ohio State, LSU, and Wisconsin … and, of course, Alabama, where he signed. Georgia, along with Penn State and Alabama, were his final three choices … which means he was being recruited by Mel Tucker, then the defensive coordinator at Georgia.

Another connection … CU’s athletics academics mentor, Sarah E. Weaver, Ph.D., tweeted out in response to Alfano’s announcement: “SO excited to and happy to work with you again! This time in Boulder!!”

In his own words … From a tweet from Alfano: “I was honored to be recruited by Alabama and Nick Saban and have nothing but positive things to say about them. I want to be successful today and tomorrow and I believe what Coach Tucker is building at Colorado gives me the best opportunity to do that.”

Antonio Alfano All-Access …

Clayton had other offers from … over a dozen other (high-profile Power-Five conference) schools. On the list of suitors was Alabama, LSU, Auburn, Georgia, Texas, Nebraska, Kansas and Texas A&M. Oddly enough, it appears that Kansas is, at least right now, CU’s greatest competition for Clayton’s services.

In his own words … “It was beautiful. The coaching staff, Coach Mel Tucker, he really cares about his kids. Colorado, in general, everything you need is there”, Clayton told Rivals. “They care about academics, about the athletic program — everyone from the ski team to the Zamboni team. Everyone is taken care of and they have all the resources you need. The coaches kept it real with me. They were straight up. Boulder is a beautiful city.”

“They told me about their plan for using me — the same way Easton uses me in the slot, at running back, and I know I can play for sure.”

Pittman had other offers from … most notably, undefeated Baylor. Pittman also had offers from Arkansas (which just fired their coach), Nevada, Tulsa, UTSA, and Arkansas State.

Rice had other offers from … almost two dozen Power-Five conference schools. From the Pac-12, Rice had offers from both Arizona schools, Cal, both Oregon schools, USC, UCLA, Utah and Washington State. Outside of the conference, Rice had offers from schools like Michigan, Wisconsin, Texas A&M, Nebraska, Oklahoma State, Michigan State and Ole Miss.

Can Rice still be swayed? He doesn’t believe so. “The reason why I waited so long was to make sure I was 100 percent locked in with that one school,” Rice told 247 Sports. “I’m all for the Buffs and now I’m going to get other guys to come with me.”

In his own words … If you are on Twitter, check out his announcement video at @BrendenRice (it’s about 90 seconds long – and worth your time!).

Why Colorado? Attending the Nebraska game at Folsom Field didn’t hurt. “Coach Tucker’s enthusiasm really stood out,” Rice told 247 Sports. “He is only loud when he needs to be and it was great to be able to see him in the locker room at that game against Nebraska. It was just different and it gave me goosebumps. I think I could run through a brick wall for that guy and it definitely makes me feel like that vision is something special.”

In his own words … It really felt like home at Colorado,” Parker told CUSportsNation.com. “The vibe, the people and feeling I had felt right. Everyone loves it there. I liked the new culture there, the players were great and it has a lot for me to like.”

“The difference was when I walked into the doors at Colorado, all of the coaches were there with open arms on my official visit,” Parker told BuffStampede.com. “When I saw that on my official visit, I knew that was the place I wanted to be. All of the coaches were interacting. At some schools, the defensive coaches don’t know you, all of the position coaches don’t know. Every coach on the staff at Colorado knows who you are and it is just like family.”

Josh Watts – P

Just the facts … Committed August 29th … Watts is punter from Australia 247 Sports bio

What others say about Watts … virtually nothing. 247 Sports has a bio on Watts, but does not include where in Australia Watts is from, his age, height or weight. And still that is better than what Rivals had on Watts when he committed … which was nothing.

Watts had other offers from … no other reported schools. He comes to CU from ProKick Australia, the website for which states that: “Prokick Australia was developed in 2007 to help guide and transition Australian athletes to perform at the College/ NFL level, and with our natural Aussie instinct of kicking a ball, we have focused on that area.” The website claims to have produced a number of NFL and NCAA kickers, including Utah’s Ray Guy Award winner, Tom Hackett.

Nigel Bethel – CB – (Transfer)

Just the facts … Committed August 29th … Bethel is a 6’0″, 170-pound defensive back from Miami, Florida by way of the Miami Hurricanes Rivals 2018 bio 247 Sports 2018 bio

What others said about Bethel … A member of the Recruiting Class of 2018, Bethel was rated by both Rivals and 247 Sports as a three-star prospect. In the opinion of 247 Sports, Bethel was the No. 113 cornerback prospect in the nation, the No. 201 player out of the talent-rich state of Florida, and the No. 1286 player overall in the nation.

Bethel had other offers from … over a dozen schools, including Georgia (which makes Bethel’s move to CU understandable), Florida, Louisville, Pitt, Purdue Rutgers, and, of course, Miami, where he signed in February, 2018. Bethel took his red-shirt year in 2018. Bethel will be enrolled at Colorado this fall, and can practice with the team, but will not be eligible to participate in games. He is listed as “inactive” on the CU roster, with four years remaining to play three.

In his own words … “Sometimes things don’t work out,” Bethel said of his time at Miami. “I put my name in the portal and I got in contact with Coach Tucker. We started talking and I felt like this would be the best opportunity for me, so we made it happen.”

“It’s a challenge,” Bethel said of playing cornerback . “I like it because it’s hard. If you are doing good at it, you’re doing something right. I like man-to-man because it’s me and the other guy.”

Bethel also said a redshirt year will have its benefits. “It will give me a chance to learn the playbook and get comfortable,” he said. “I can get in the weight room and put on a few pounds.”

From the Omaha-World Herald: Thomas played in four games this season as a redshirt freshman. He recorded four tackles, with a season-high three coming against FCS foe Bethune-Cookman.

Thomas said he hasn’t decided where he’s transferring. “It’s not working out,” Thomas said via message when asked why he was transferring.

The Miami product committed to the Huskers on signing day two years ago over Pittsburgh and Louisville. As Nebraska transitioned to a 3-4 defense, Thomas was was lauded as someone who could quickly help rush the passer as an outside linebacker.

In his own words … When asked by BuffStampede.com in May what his goals would be for the upcoming season, Thomas exuded confidence:

“I think the record is about 12 and I want to get to 20 sacks this year,” he said. “I switched up from defensive end to outside linebacker when I got to college so over the last couple years I have become more of a student of the game. I understand it a lot more now. And I have improved my work ethic. I learned how to work hard, and I now know what comes from working harder.”

Jackson had others from … a handful of other schools, with only one, Memphis, easily found on a map (others being Troy, Louisiana-Monroe, and Liberty). Out of high school, Jackson also had limited options, mostly due to the fact that he didn’t start playing football until four years ago.

In his own words … “I quickly fell in love with football and since I got kind of a late start, I always have a chip on my shoulder,” Jackson told BuffStampede.com. “My younger brother just started to play football and he wants to be just like me, so that motivates me. And I let him know, no matter where you go, you can be one of the best players if you just work hard.”

“The way that they play their defense fits my style,” Jackson told the Daily Camera. “I think it’s very fast and up-tempo and that’s what we kind of do at Northwest; we’re fast and up-tempo. It’ll fit my style and I’m really excited to be a part of it … My mother really loved their coaching staff, as well, because they really helped me change myself as a person and academically. They have a great academic staff, as well, and that’s the reason I went to Northwest. The coaches there are really strong about their academics. They get on us about that.”

Brendon Lewis – QB

Just the facts … Committed May 10th … Lewis is a 6’3″, 205-pound dual-threat quarterback from Melissa, Texas  Rivals bio  247 Sports bio

What others say about Lewis … Lewis is rated as a three-star prospect by both Rivals and 247 Sports. At Rivals, Lewis is ranked as the No. 17 dual-threat quarterback in the nation, and the No. 60 overall prospect out of the state of Texas. 247 Sports, meanwhile, has Lewis rated as the No. 13 dual-threat quarterback from the Recruiting Class of 2020, the No. 63 prospect out of the state of Texas, and the No. 446 recruit in the nation. In 2018, for the 8-4 Melissa Cardinals, Lewis threw for 2,524 yards, with 34 touchdowns and only three interceptions. Lewis also ran for 967 yards and 11 touchdowns. In three seasons for Melissa, Lewis has accounted for just shy of 8,000 total yards … and 98 touchdowns.

At the Rivals Camp Series stop in Dallas in late-March (see link to video highlights, below), Lewis won the “Mr. Clean” Superlative.

“In a loaded crop of quarterbacks in Dallas, one dual-threat who deserved recognition was Lewis,” Rivals.com Analyst Sam Spiegelman wrote. “The Melissa passer is our Mr. Clean, largely because he was so smooth and so precise all afternoon.

“Lewis has impressive size, a fluid throwing motion and spot-on accuracy. Without acknowledging his ability to move in and out of the pocket, Lewis was one of the more reliable passers at camp with his stock on the rise.”

Lewis had other offers from … over a dozen other schools, most from Power-Five conferences. Lewis had offers from Nebraska, TCU, Mississippi State, Missouri, Boston College, Syracuse, Texas Tech, Vanderbilt, Kansas and Houston. Lewis took an official visit to Colorado and Missouri before deciding.

In his own words … I really like their coaches,” Lewis told BuffZone.com. “Coach Tuck, he has a great staff with him. The reason I chose them over Mizzou is my opportunity to play early and just start early. I really like the coaches and players, and I love Boulder; it’s beautiful and a nice campus. The education is nice, too. I just feel like it’s the right fit and I can be successful there.”

From Rivals.com … “I like how diverse Colorado is and the style in all they do things there. I know they can teach me how to get to the next level and all of the schemes. That’s because of Coach Johnson and how smart he is. He’s a very smart coach and you can tell he knows what he’s doing. He made me a priority and he wants me to learn the offense. He always gives the keys to the offense to the quarterbacks to run the offense and even call plays from the line of scrimmage.”

“It was a pretty difficult decision, but Coach Johnson and the offense separated them (Colorado from other schools). It’s also the competition and the overall school, the education and all that. Coach Johnson and the offense, though, how multiple they’re gonna be, I can see myself succeeding in their offense.”

87 Replies to “Recruiting Class of 2020”

  1. ESPN just published a story about how since it’s Wednesday in Australia, a pair of Australian kicker/punters have already signed national letters of intent, including the punter for CU.

Kind of a cute gimmick to be the first guy to sign a NLI, if nothing else.

  2. Does any know the rule about transfers? Do they count against the number of scholarships the way that new recruits do? I think I read that Alfano will count against last year. Or maybe he won’t count at all because he already counted against Alabama’s class last year? What about these guys in the Transfer Portal? Can we get as many of those guys as we want as long as we don’t go over 85 total scholarships next fall?

  3. Mister Williams, LB….. 6’2″, 230-pounds He appears to have good speed from videos. He could be a “LOAD” as an RB also….but it seems he is being recruited only as a LB.

He does have those long strides like a lot of really good RB’s in years past. The coaches , obviously, have more info’ on him, so I defer to them…..however, could I be right ?

    Any thoughts Stuart ?

    1. I like it!
Use him like UCLA used Myles Jack a few years back. Bring him in on short yardage and specialty plays, and let him take care of business.
We won’t have Laviska for third-and-three next year, so perhaps Williams could be groomed for that role …

  4. Coates decommit was not unexpected.

    Good luck to him.

    Buffs.

Note: Better talent on the hook actually
Note 2: There have 6 decommits from the Buffs this recruiting class. Do you know who they are?

  5. The DB commits of 4 vs. decommits of 3 is odd. You’d think they would want to be here for a position in need i.e. playing time.

    1. Thats “MISTER” to you fella.
Offers from LSU and Ohio State….hmmmm….1 and 2 in the rankings right now but what is even sweeter is we took another one from the feed lot food in Linkin.
I know this is redundant but I still ask the question of who is making these star rankings at the scouting “services.” Are any of them longtime college coaches who have not only looked at probably more film of the thousands of prospects as well as coached and developed hundreds.
      Go Mel
      and Buffs

      1. I am confused how all these kids we have committed that had offers from Ohio st, LSU, and Bama only have 3 star rankings? I can assure you if they committed to those other schools they would be 4 stars.

And yes, LOVING the names of this group!!!

      2. Yes stars are funny. The qb recruit was a 4 star until he committed to the Buffs. Fact.

Now the rumor is that several of the Buff recruits will be upgraded on 247 after their stellar senior years.

        Buffs

  6. Yo so where did all the comments go? Just wondering.

Anyway this Perkins thing was kinda expected. Supposed to do his official. Didn’t happen. One of the lower ranked (not that it matters eh?) Safety is a position of need. Now only one Safety and 1 cornerback committed. Hopefully this happening because they have a couple of high ranked safeties on the hook.

Anyway this recruiting stuff is pressure packed. Time for a Blatz

    Go Buffs.

Note: Blatz beer is currently produced by the Miller Brewing Company of Milwaukee, under contract for Pabst Brewing Company. See? Complicated

    1. Not that is any of your concern, but the site slows down with too many comments, so some comments – especially the most verbose ones – were purged.

    2. Blatz? Blatz beer??? I have heard the name before but dont remember if I have ever had the “pleasure.” Is Blatz popular with golfers? I will try not to be prejudiced here but if you also drink Hamms and Lucky Lager that may give me some idea about Blatz.
Also it might indicate you are Blatzted when posting occasionally.

      1. Yes
        Hamms
        Schiltz
        Pabst
        Miller
        Gettleman
        Fauerbach
        Heilman
        Colt45
        Mad Dog 2020 (and 4040
        Thunderbird
        And some others.

        Nice?

        Buffs

        1. Back in my day in Boulder we drank imported beer…..A-1, imported from Phoenix. Recognize that brand, AZ?
39 cents for a 40 oz jug. A sixer of Coors was 89 cents and beyond my budget.

  7. This rating system is confusing at best, a cat that played both ways and had 41 receptions for 1,227 yards (29.9 yards/catch) and 21 touchdowns and added 60 tackles and six interceptions playing safety is only a three star? Oh, and on a team that played quality opponents and played for the CA state title too, not an unknown school in an unknown conference. What would have to do to get 4 stars?

Looks like a good get regardless of the rating.

  8. So this recruiting stuff is weird. And it is a fast moving business.
    example”
Edgerrin Cooper OLB 6’2 205 From Louisiana (key point)
    4 Star.
    Longtime commitment to the Sooners
He has over 30 offers. But not one from the Mighty Buffs
On November 4th he tweets. “Honored to receive and offer from the University of Colorado.

What? Shotgun hunting by the Buffs????????

Then November 27 he announces he is de-committing from the sooners.

    Interesting eh?
Not saying the Buffs are gonna get him Stu so sheesh………….All public

But now all of a sudden he has Buff coaches and recruits following him.

Just so strange. “The undercurrent of communication of College recruiting eh?

    Buffs.

Note: About the same time Edgerrin was announcing his decommit, it was being announced by 247 (Steve Wiltfong) that Shane Whitter a 4( says 3 on 247 funny) star linebacker committed to wake, decommited and committed to the sooners. Sheesh

17 days till signing period…………..Mein Gott………..of those currently committed…………..who is gonna sign………who is gonna not sign………………and what about the surprise, hidden, secret, signings……………..More whiskey

  9. Regarding the earache-VK squabble over next year’s QB I aint about to make a prediction but I am pulling for Stenstrom.
    1. He is a Colorado kid
    2. I may be wrong about this but I think he got most of the PT at Valor than the McCaffrey mercenary…not just a mercenary but a corn cob mercenary.
    3. Hoping he got a little extra boost from his dad on making reads and other decisions.
    4. and I think he was scout team player of the year in ’18.
    5. He aint short on the measurables.
Dont get me wrong. I will be happy as AZBuff at Pinnacle Peaks Steak house if Noyer or Lewis rise to the challenge of erasing Steve Montez’ records with many additional wins. (waiting for a rise out of AZ)
Also happy as hell Abrams and Hambright chose to Transfer to CU but when it comes to a QB I think its better to have one who has paid his dues on the same roster he has started with.
Leach has proved otherwise but he manages to find his transfer stars on less than FBS teams. The last one came from City College of San Francisco and as such didnt come in with a sense of entitlement from recruiting rankings and Gordon did pay his dues riding the pine last year.

    1. I have no neckties since moving to Tucson therefore no need to drive all the way to PP’s to get a pretty good steak. I too would like to see more of Stenstrom as from that one dash in the USC game it appears that also being able to pass the ball he can also really run with it. Hopefully as his dad was a pretty good QB maybe he might turn out to be as good in college as Archie’s boys, Payton and Eli.

  10. This is how I interpret this. Chiv stepped it up a big notch, HCMT recognized it and kept him on staff AND stepped it up yet another notch. Oh I hope this is the true analysis.

  11. Does anyone know how the last 3 recruiting classes for the Buffs were ranked? I’m particularly interested in last year’s ranking.

    1. Class of ’19 – 45th (doesn’t include the likes of graduate transfers Hambright and Onu … or the five-star Alfano) – Mangham and Shenault the two four-star recruits
Class of ’18 – 51st – no four star recruits
Class of ’17 – 32nd – coming off of 10-4 season – Nixon and Moretti the two four-star recruits

      1. Oh boy, LaVar.

It’s great seeing the talent level continue to rise for CU Football. It sure has to, if we want to see consistent wins, doesn’t it?

As to recruiting? I don’t get as fired up by the star ratings, class rankings, etc. as you do. I prefer judging each class after year three or four. Who knew so many kids on the 2016 team would get to the NFL when they started at CU? Not a lot of people. Heck, Laviska was a three star kid. Ken Crawley was a guy you never thought had it, but, he did OK in the NFL. Hmmmm.

Now, back to the current recruiting, it is nice to see what looks like another uptick in the level of players they’re bringing in. And, if they can stack up some highly ranked kids, and continue finding and developing the “diamonds in the rough” that’ll go a long way to helping offset those higher rated kids who just don’t pan out.

For too long at CU we’ve seen the occasional “home run” recruit just not meet those expectations they had coming in (whether injury/ies, maturity, transferring, getting booted, etc.). And, in most cases there hasn’t been enough talent behind them to pick up the slack.

So far, these first returns are promising. Looking forward and hoping to see it all come together, finally.

And, since we’re on recruiting, how ’bout this? I’ll bet you your favorite beer, a six pack even, that the incoming freshman QB, Brendan Lewis, you’ve anointed the starter next year won’t be the starter against CSU to start the year, nor UW to close out the season. You in on that action?

        Go Buffs.

        1. Regardless of Mac’s record at CU, he upgraded the roster. Bigly. Was it bigly enough? Nope. Hopefully this guy can get there. I’ll still evaluate the 2019 and 2020 classes in like 2022 or so.

But, back to our wager? My gut says Stenstrom. Your mouth says Lewis. Shall we wager? If it’s Lytle, or a grad transfer? Then I guess it’s a push.

          What say you?

          Go Buffs.

      2. Bet? Why not bet, lavar? You asked me to pick my alternative to your anointed freshman. Then we could wager, you said. I did. You post other random meaningless drivel. Everywhere. No wager? Why not? It is in good fun. Surely you can afford a six pack. You know where to find me. Mailing address and all.

        Go Buffs

      3. Bwaaaaaaahahahahahahahahaha. You’re hilarious.

Man, talk about seeing what you don’t know. We’ve seen that out of you for going on a decade now.

Regardless, I hope you and yours have a great Thanksgiving. And, that the Buffs pull off a stunning upset in SLC.

        Go Buffs

  12. McCartney always said that his teams were good not because he was a great coach but because he had the best players. HCMT, at least for his first full class, seems to be bringing in a better level of talent. Perhaps we will get to see if that is true. Patience everyone, Coach Mac was 1-10 in year 3, but you could tell that the talent was improving by then.

  13. Great quotes! And his stats, the praise from others, along with his pedigree, makes his quotes hold more weight than maybe other recruits. Great weather and a win against Stanford makes for a nice weekend to have a bunch of top recruits in town.

  14. Maybe VK can figure this out.
What is the percentage of Freshmen who were starters at the very beginning of the season? (and not because there were multiple defections and injuries like here)
Another interesting stat would be how many 4 and 5 stars are down in the depth chart and riding the pine at places like Alabama and Ohio State.
In other words thanks for the transfer portal.
Maybe some of these kids will start thinking ahead of the portal before they commit and realize the ego trip is better when they are actually playing on the field instead of just saying they are on the team

  15. Hopefully Antonio’s commitment will open the eyes of some other high profile guys. Watch him get knocked down to a 4 star now. I know it doesnt make a damn bit of difference but its still annoying. Seems like Lewis was a 4 star until he committed. Rice has to be a 4 star if he has even a fourth of his dad’s work ethic.
    And for AZBuff:
Sounds like you abandoned all your elders who were in the “home”….or were they all as sharp as jeopardy champs to the very end?

  16. The Alfano news is exciting. And so far Coach Tucker is more than holding his own in this new world of the transfer portal. Best wishes ahead assuming that Maddox, Callier, and Jones indeed move on. And a big welcome to Antonio Alfano and DB Nigel Bethel out of the U. of Miami, who in his own right had a host of Power 5 offers coming out of high school.

  17. Antonio Alfano is an extraordinary talent and, for whatever it’s worth he has made his CU decision “Instagram Official”. We are indeed a long way to January 2020 and even a longer way to Opening Day 2020 so for now I’d say cautious optimism is the order of the day.

I’ve a friend who is Bergen Catholic alum (one of 3 NJ high schools that Alfano attended) who is pretty involved still with their football program, knows Alfano and family. He thinks kid’s CU commitment is legit and he is indeed Boulder bound.

    Here’s to hoping he’s right.

  18. Whenever I hear of a recruit “all in 100%” my cynical mind goes back to Ty Evans, another Colorado defector, who never missed a chance to tell everyone how he was a Buff forever. In that particular case the Buffs actually got lucky for a change. It seems Evans hasnt been able to crack 3rd string at NC State.
So far I havent heard a quote from Alfano or anyone connected with him except for the Buffs academic adviser. It usually takes me longer than the average person to learn a lesson but I have lived long enough to realize a lot of over used words usually mean nothing or the exact opposite. So…..so far…..no blah blah blah is good news.
    Welcome aboard Antonio.

    1. You cant be much younger based on some of the tunes you like to use your words with. As far as minimizing of the mind goes I think you will get an argument on your self approval in that area from a few who read your posts in here. I have tried to hold off because of the depth your Buff devotion.
I am not a subscriber to twitter or face book or any of the other blah blah blah mediums. I feel sure psychologists/neurologists will come up with a name of the need or effect it has on devotees. I see it in people whom I am around.

      1. That recent back and forth regarding age by ep and VK sounds like a couple of old f _ _ts at a Nursing Home…….yep yep talkin’ bout those good ole (not ol) days. Now from someone young like me that does know a lot about Buff History (I just read about from books) as I really don’t know what goes on or much about Nursing Homes. I would say that as they both sound about at the end of the line maybe they should explore some around the Boulder area where they can be welcomed by a bunch more ole Buffs and discuss Buffalo Bill and all the great old stories about life under the Flatirons.

  19. Hey Stuart, any idea where CU stands as far as scholarships for next year and how many spots are available in the current class? Would think the recent transfer portal would open up more spots for the 2020 class. Was looking for a current eligibility remaining breakdown of the scholarship athletes on the team. Everything I’ve been able to find doesn’t distinguish between scholarship athletes and walk ons.

    1. Hey Erik,
If you look at the Game Notes, page 61, there is a list of “How the Buffs were built”, which is up-to-date (e.g., it shows Aaron Maddox, Jacob Callier, and Darrion Jones as being “no longer with the team”). By my count, there are 81 scholarship players on the roster.
On page 25, there is the list of 18 seniors. So, as it stands right now, you are looking at 22 available scholarships. That number will increase after the season, with normal attrition.
Long story short, the Buffs will be able to sign a full 25-scholarship Class of 2020 (and could fudge in some gray-shirts and blue-shirts if they want to)

  20. The Rice signing is so much more than just getting a WR…It again demonstrates the value of Coach Tuck and staff. Jerry is not going to suffer any fools for his son…having him around the program is FANTASTIC and finally thought Brendan’s quote on Tuck was a direct take on Harbaugh…who always seems to be running around screaming.

  21. In the latest poll (Brenden Rice) I voted “Love it” only because it the poll did not have a ” wait and see” if Rice sticks with it.

      1. I read that and I hope he stays with it. I’m just old and cynical about young men committing to something and then backing out of their commitment.

  22. Stuart, what about the Punter commit -The kid from Australia? We could be in good shape for that component of Special Teams for the next few years.

    1. Couldn’t find much on Josh Watts, though the training site where he comes from, ProKick Australia, claims to have produced five Ray Guy Award winners, and 17 All-Americans.
      Fingers crossed.

  23. Kinda bizarre feeling that almost half of this recruiting class so far (7) is from the SEC footprint and only 1 (one!) is from Colorado…

Not sure what, if anything, that means.

    1. Considering many of the coaches come from SEC territory and they have been at CU for less than a year and recruiting can be a 2 year, or more relationship, it could be some of these players had contact with one CU’s coaches before they got to CU.

    2. Let’s be honest, Colorado is not a hotbed for high school football. They’ll keep getting some from the top tier, but it’s a small pile.

    3. As good players are offered as juniors in HS, you better have a 2-3 relationship with them starting in junior high/middle school! That means all of our Colorado recruits have only memories of CU as a loser program! Can’t expect an immediate turnaround in perceptions until after at least one season.

  24. VK, you never golfed in England, Scotland or Ireland ? I find this so hard to believe. You, being such a golf nut, who I might say can afford it as far as I can read, and haven’t gone back to the roots of golf to experience golf as it was played in the beginning ! Really ? On those old courses, I can understand not having cart paths….. but they have some cushy, modern courses too…. But experiencing golf in a sweater with an umbrella in hand to thwart the rain and wind while hearing the surf lap at a beach to remind you that you would be better off sitting, with your feet propped up in the clubhouse, in front of a fireplace with lager in hand, is an experience that would be embedded in your fondest memories of a round not like any other.

Enuff golf………. let’s get to the nitty-gritty. #1). The “Nitty” is playing the “Cob Wipe Sticks” #2). The “Gritty” is stompin’ the “Cob Wipe Sticks” butt. Plain and simple.

Don’t let the “Red” dominate any part of Folsom folks. This has always been a pet peeve of mine in the past. Fill Folsom with Black and Gold for chrissakes.

    GO BUFFS

  25. I might keep an eye on Perkins recruiting. If he winds up with MM you have to wonder what he is saying about CU.Hopefully these kids are aware enough to realize sour grapes when they see it.

    1. Well VK….I doubt if MM would ever get way down in the dirt. When he is talking to Perkins I can envision it going something like this:
Joe…we are both southerners. That means we are also country. You need to stay here in the SEC which is the toughest baddest conference in the country…..not like those limp wristed fruitcakes out West….”
All this coming out of MM’s mouth while he is wearing that gardening hat

  26. Proof’s in the puddin’….. so, we’ll see what kind of Kool-aid all the preseason prognosticators are chugging. To evaluate talent, you have to see the candidates matched up with someone in the top tier of talent, not an average HS athlete. I do enjoy watching the videos tho’.

    Waitin’. Hopin’ and Prayin’

    GO BUFFS !!!!

  27. Watched the video of the latest recruit “Big Al.” I don’t know what kind of schools they were playing, talent wise, but he sure did seem to have a nose for the ball. In the video he looks to have great football instincts. We will probably lose Nate Landman after this year and I hope that “Big Al” can come in next year and start the process of replacing Nate L.

  28. The athleticism of the 2020 recruits looks outstanding. They said they were going to recruit the country, and they are doing just that. They said they wanted to get bigger and be physical, time will tell. Last year we signed lots of big bodies on defense…this year it looks like we are signing some closers. I love how these recruits are being pursued by quality football schools, save a few kids. How many days until the Rams?

  29. Another 2* was a 6’8″ tight end from Buena Vista named Nate Solder. Stars, and high school performance are from high school. Player development is huge, as some guys reach their peak in HS, other later on. One thing which cannot be taught is speed. Have 100% faith in Mel Tucker. Bottom line, imho, Buffs must show it on the field before higher rated players consider coming here on a consistent basis.
    and others later on.

    1. Yeah man. Easiest example in CU history is Darrell scott. A man among boys in high school. In college, he was no longer the biggest, fastest, baddest dude, and he was surpassed quickly. Scouting talent is one thing. Scouting where a kid is on their growth curve, physically and mentally is another. Clay Matthews was a walkon at usc. did ok for himself.

So far, I like the guys Tucker and co are getting. They know a lot more than I do about all the above.

      Go Buffs

      1. If you watched Scott’s high school highlights you would have seen he was the beneficiary of an extraordinary blocking system. Most times no one touched him for 10 yards and when someone did he went down…..no lateral movement.

        1. I would hope that coaches and their recruiters, even the recruiting services that you think about as highly of as I do, consider supporting cast and competition in their analyses. Either way, Scott was one of the bigger busts in CU recruiting history. Oh well.

          Go Buffs.

  30. Got the Last Name and from what I saw on the Highlights, we now have our “Big Al” for the 2020’s National Championship run.

  31. I love trusting your eyes…as I’ve gotten older I’ve learned to trust what I see, not listen to anyone else. For example, it was CLEAR as day that Phillip was the best back for the Donekys in last year’s preseason, game 2 at Mile High the fans were getting made at me b/c I kept screaming every time they gave the ball to Booker, Freeman, etc. and I was rooting for the Raiders….why did it take VJ 4 weeks to install him as #1??? Really was a mystery to me…it was all on film for everyone to see. In Coach Tuck I trust 10000%

  32. For now I won’t sweat the lack of star attention on these two latest recruits. Sometimes the *unrated to 2* guys coming out of high school get overlooked only to find their groove and develop. Ask Jordy Nelson, J.J Watt, DeMarcus Ware, Aqib Talib and others. And recent history closer to home shows former 2* Buff and current 49’er Ahkello Witherspoon making the leap.

  33. Gerad Lichtenhan – OL
Just the facts … Committed June 18th … Lichtenhan is a 6’8″, 345-pound offensive lineman from Davis, California

Crazy watching HUDL highlight from my old football field.
    Go BLUE DEVILS!!!

  34. Stuart,
I just noticed that Wray and Lewis are both 4 stars on 247 now. Their bios on here still list them at 3.

    1. True. Thanks for letting me know.
I usually go with how they are listed when they commit, and update when we get close to signing Day, as these ratings fluctuate during their senior years … or, if you are cynical, how they are down-graded once they commit to CU 😉
I will update the unrated (like two of the last three) when Rivals gets around to giving them a rating.

  35. Love it…that’s why folks like Wigley are bye-bye.
The clear direction of the program/team that is being laid out is such a stark contrast to Mac2.0. This was never clear nor demonstrated even when he came on…how are you going to rebuild the program?? Hence my disdain for him very early, he never demonstrated anything close to strategic thought and planning WITH unwavering commitment. Right/wrong or otherwise, at the very least everyone (even us fans) are clear on where we are going. Bigger/faster/stronger…physical/mental toughness, resolve and improvement through actual teaching/coaching. You can imagine the future results with this plan.
