Two more commitments!

The long-dormant 2010 Colorado recruiting class has sprung to life, as two more verbal commitments have reportedly been secured. In addition to the two New Orleans teammates (quarterback Munchie Legaux and wide receiver Keenan Canty) and California cornerback Jered Bell (stories on all three, below), Scout.com is now listing two more players on the Buffs’ list of commitments.

First up is tight end Justin Favors, from Trotwood-Madison High outside Dayton, Ohio. Favors is 6’3″, 228 pounds, and runs a 4.84 40. Favors made his official visit last weekend, and committed after returning home to Ohio. Still, Favors is considered a “soft verbal”, as he may take other recruiting trips. “Right now, I’m really focusing on Colorado,” Favors told BuffStampede.com, “but I might take some more visits and still see what’s going on.” Favors is only considered a one-star recruit by Scout.com, while getting two stars from Rivals.com. Still, Favors does have offers from a number of  schools, including Cincinnati, Syracuse, and Louisville from the Big East.

Favors would help fill one of the few voids being left by the 2009 senior class. There are no fewer than four senior tight ends on the Colorado roster, so early playing time is certainly a selling point. To date, the only other tight end commitment for the 2010 class is from Kyle Slavin, a three-star prospect from Littleton, who gave his commitment to Colorado back in June.

The second new recruit is from Donnie Duncan, a three-star athlete from Hamilton High School in Los Angeles. Duncan is currently listed as an”athlete”, and plays wide receiver and cornerback in high school. He has contributed on both sides of the ball, catching six passes for touchdowns, returning two kicks for scores (best guess as to why he was being recruited by CU), thrown two touchdown passes, and returned two interceptions for touchdowns. Duncan is listed at 6’0″, 185 pounds, and reportedly runs a 4.6 in the 40 yard dash.

The Buffs are now up to 12 commitments for the 2010 class (though three are still “soft”). How many Colorado will sign is still a question. There are only 76 players on the roster currently, with 85 scholarships allowed. There are 14 seniors in the 2009 class, which seemingly adds up to 23 available scholarships. However, coaches like to hold back a few scholarships each season for walk-ons and future classes, and there are still the issues of players transferring and the program losing scholarships due to poor overall APR scores. Best guess … Colorado will sign 18-20 players in February, so the class may be about half full (with only one four-star recruit, athlete Danny Spond, currently on the list).

Commit No. 10

Cornerback Jared Bell Tuesday became the Buffs’ tenth verbal commitment of the 2010 recruiting season.  Bell a two-star defensive back in the eyes of Scout.com, is 6’0″, 170 pounds, and reportedly runs a 4.66 in the 40. According to Rivals.com, is a three-star cornerback who can run a 4.45.  Bell, whose father, Richard, played wingback for Nebraska in the late 1980’s, chose Colorado over Colorado State. Other schools which had expressed an interest, but had not made offers, include Washington, Boise State, Washington State, and Utah.

Jered plays for Ontario Colony (California), which is 8-1 on the 2009 season. To date, Jered has accumulated 34 tackles and three interceptions. Earlier this season, Jered told BuffStampede.com that his numbers are artificially low. “I rarely had balls thrown my way,” said Jered. “It was kind of flattering at first, but after awhile I was getting kind of mad because I want the opportunity to make plays.”

According to Rivals, Jered is the 63rd-best cornerback in the country; Scout sees Jered as the 133rd-best cornerback.

In the sack

Colorado has allowed sixteen sacks in the last two games; 36 on the season. The Buffs have sunk to 118th in the nation in the sacks allowed category, with only Miami (Ohio) and Washington State permitting more sacks per game.

Any chance that statistic will improve against Iowa State this weekend?

“We just keep grinding away, working on it every day,” offensive line coach Denver Johnson told the Longmont Times-Call. “We’ll just continue to stress fundamentals. There’s no magic wand, no pixie dust to make it go away.” Johnson also indicated that the return of Bryce Givens, who has been out has missed four full games this season for “personal reasons” but returned to action against Texas A&M, may help. “We started off the season with him out there, and there was some promise there,” said Johnson. “He kind of got off track a little bit there, but apparently he’s back with us fully.”

Johnson did not rule out Givens starting against Iowa State. Nor did he rule out moving Ryan Miller back into the guard position. “We’ve been playing Ryan Miller on the edge, and he’s probably better suited inside,” Johnson said.

Looking for any other good news? How’s this – Iowa State is 107th in the nation in sacks, generating only 12 sacks all season. If the Buffs can keep the Cyclones to their season average of 1.2 sacks per game, it will be a good Colorado’s chances …

Buffs pick up two new recruits

Colorado picked up more than a victory this past weekend, they picked two new recruits for the incoming 2010 class. The higher profile prospect is quarterback Munchie Legaux, a three-star player out of Edna Karr Magnet School in New Orleans. Joining Legaux is teammate Keenan Canty, a (to date) one-star wide receiver recruit. The two were in Boulder this past weekend for the Texas A&M game, and committed on Sunday.

Legaux has led his team to a 9-1 regular season record, and is excited that the Buffs recruited him to be a quarterback. “It was a place that needed me, not wanted me,” Legaux told Rivals.com. “I want to be at a place that needs me and not a school that just wants to add me to a spot on the roster.” Legaux, who has not ruled out taking other official visits, is rated as the No. 38 quarterback in the nation by Scout.com, and the No. 12 dual threat quarterback in the country by Rivals.com. The 6’4″, 185 pound prospect chose Colorado over Michigan, Oregon, and Baylor (three schools which, it should be noted, have young quarterbacks in place).

Not as highly recruited is Legaux’s teammate, wide receiver Keenan Canty. The 5’9″, 150 pound wide receiver (Scout – 5’10”, 180 pounds on Rivals) is obviously a smaller wide out than has come to be the norm in college footbasll, but Canty is undaunted.  “I just see myself going there and performing,” Canty told BuffaloSportsNews. “They were telling me that they also need some help at returns.” Canty has 34 catches for about 350 yards and seven touchdowns for Edna Karr Magnet School, but is unranked by either Scout or Rivals. Canty’s only other scholarship offer to date was from Hampton University, though Canty did indicate he had received interest from Tulane and Mississippi.

While it is a bit unusual to obtain two commits from the same school on the same weekend, there was in fact a third teammate from New Orleans in Boulder for the CU/Texas A&M game. Three-star defensive tackle prospect Harold Legania is also from Edna Karr Magnet School, but he did not give the Buffs a third commit this past weekend. Legania, who has already taken an official visit to Minnesota, has an offer from the Gophers, as well as offers from Mississippi, Virginia, Mississippi State, and North Carolina.

The New Orleans trio were amongst the ten recruits who took official visits this past weekend. Of the remaining seven, one of the best options for the Buffs is offensive tackle Kaiwi Crabb, a three-star prospect from Honolulu. Crabb is the No. 38 offensive tackle in the eyes of Rivals, but also ranks the Buffs “high” on his list of schools. Crabb also has offers from Hawaii and Washington, and has interest from Stanford and Oregon.

Colorado now has nine recruits for its 2010 class, and is ranked 64th in the nation by Scout.com (10th in the Big 12); 50th in the nation by Rivals.com (11th in the Big 12).

  1. Way to go Hawk! I’d take a 3 star recruit from LA over a 5 star recruit from CA ANY day of the week… they just play more hard nosed football down there. I’m happy to see more interest in recuiting from Louisiana!
