Nick Hirschman ready to take the field if called upon
While the future of the Colorado quarterback corps brightened considerably this week with the signing of former Texas quarterback Connor Wood, the present depth chart is a bit unnerving.
Behind senior quarterback Tyler Hansen there are no quarterbacks who have taken a snap in a Division 1-A football game. Red-shirt freshman Nick Hirschman, who missed over a week of fall practice with a foot injury, is the primary backup.
Reason for concern?
Not according to Hirschman.
“I didn’t feel like I was far behind at all”, Hirschman told BuffaloSportsNews.net. “I was able to get in the playbook while I was hurt, and I didn’t fall behind. I got on the tape. The only thing I couldn’t do was move. So I wasn’t far behind at all. I attended all the meetings. The first couple days when I wasn’t out at practice they said there was no point to be out there just standing around. So I was in the training room.”
Is Hirschman ready to lead the team if called upon? “It’s very exciting,” said Hirschman. “Any time an athlete gets an opportunity to go out and show…

“Guys are showing who they are”
Colorado conducted its last practice before the Spring game on Thursday, with the practice, at the last minute, being opened to the public. Jon Embree described the two-hour run-through as a “good practice. The defense had a couple of lapses, but otherwise they did well. Offensively, we got some things accomplished, some things done we wanted to get done as far as some install stuff. Guys are showing who they are.”
The Colorado head coach then raised some eyebrows when he was asked about whether there were some players who had not lived up to expectations. “It’s a privilege to be a Buffalo; it’s not a right,” said Embree. “If they can’t play, and they’re not doing what they are supposed to do academically, and buying into the program, they won’t be here.” Embree went on, ” Some won’t be back; everyone’s year-to-year. It’s simple. I don’t ask a lot. I want effort; I want you to compete. I want you to do it on and off the field. That’s basically all I ask … and for some guys, they can’t do that.”

Spring Practice Preview -
Special Teams
Roster: Toney Clemons (Sr.); Arthur Jaffee (Sr.); Brian Lockridge (Sr.); Will Jefferson (Jr.); Justin Castor (So.); Zach Grossnickle (So.); Ryan Iverson (So.); Justin Gorman (R-Fr.)
Players Lost: Aric Goodman; Joe Silipo; Scotty McKnight; Cody Hawkins; Travon Patterson
“Numbers Don’t Lie“
Yuck.
There was very little which was special about the special teams play by the University of Colorado in 2010.
Colorado was ranked 88th in net punting last year, with Zach Grossnickle struggling to a 35.7 yards net average (Colorado’s opponents’ net average was 40.2). Senior kicker Aric Goodman connected on two-thirds of his attempts (10-for-15), but was only accurate half the time from beyond 30 yards (5-for-10).
In the return game, Colorado was adequate at best. There were several long kickoff returns, with a long of 89 yards by Arthur Jaffee against Iowa State, but the Buffs were unable to come up with a kick returner which they felt comfortable with, as four players posted between eight and 14 kickoff returns during the season. All four – Arthur Jaffee (14); Toney Clemons (10); Brian Lockridge (10); and Will Jefferson (8) – return in 2011, but there are no guarantees that any from that group…

2010 Spring Practice – First Look: Offense
Quarterbacks
Returning players: Cody Hawkins (Sr.), Tyler Hansen (Jr.), and Clark Evans (R-Fr.). Walk-ons: Seth Labato (R-Fr.), Blake Stanley (R-Fr.) (Walk-on quarterback Jerry Slota left the team, transferring to DeAnza Community College in California).
New in 2010: Josh Moten (Fr. – 2009 recruit; enrolled in January); Nick Hirschman (Fr. – 2010 recruit; enrolled in January)
If Dan Hawkins wants to have a parade of angry, torch-wielding Buff fans at his doorstep, all he has to do is to name his son Cody as the presumptive starter for the 2010 season.
Okay, that’s not going to happen – at least not during spring practice.
So don’t go nuclear if you read about the quarterback race this spring being an “open competition”. Every job is supposed to be open for back-ups to do their best to oust the incumbents. There was a minor uproar on the internet when Rivals.com published a story entitled, “Quarterback battle brewing in Boulder?”, but the story contained no insights as to any such controversy. In fact, the story contained the following … “Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Eric Kiesau will likely not name their starter for 2010 anytime soon. But one has…

September 23rd
By the Numbers
What does a 24-0 shutout do for a team which was ranked no higher than 100th in the nation in six statisitical categories?
Great things, apparently.
Now, after three weeks of play, the Buffs are only ranked in the bottom twenty in the nation in three statistical categories … yea! Granted, Colorado is still in the 100′s in rushing offense (106th – ouch!), rushing defense (104th – not completely unexpected) and pass efficiency defense (100th – yuck), but the Buffs have made progress in the areas of total defense (99th, up from 111th), scoring defense (78th, well up from the ranking of 107th a week ago), and sacks allowed (93rd, up from 104th). The Buffs also moved up in net punting (42nd, up significantly from 75th), pass defense (75th, up from 98th), and sacks (38th, up from 67th).
If it’s any consolation, there are only three categories in which a Big 12 North team leads the conference – pass efficiency defense (Kansas State), pass efficiency (Missouri), and sacks allowed (Iowa State).
Dare to dream – Colorado is just another shutout or two away from really making a statisical splash!
Roster updates
As the Buffs’ bye week…

September 6th – Boulder Colorado State 23, Colorado 17
Colorado State quarterback Grant Stucker passed for 208 yards, while running back John Mosure had two scores in leading the Rams to a 23-17 victory over Colorado in Boulder. The win was the first in Folsom Field for Colorado State since 1986, sending most of the near-sellout crowd of 53,168 home in dismay.
The Colorado Buffaloes’ 2009 season started about as badly as a season can.
The Rams took the opening kickoff smartly down the field, taking only six plays to cover 80 yards, with Mosure scoring from a yard out to give Colorado State a 7-0 lead just 3:13 into the game. The Buffs’ response? Three-and-out, gaining six yards.
Two series later, the score was up to 14-0, as the Rams took advantage of an interception and a personal foul penalty to start their drive at mid-field. The drive took ten plays, but the result was the same – touchdown, Colorado State, with Stucker and Mosure connecting from 14 yards out.
While the Colorado State offense was moving smoothly, the Colorado offense was anemic. The Buffs generated all of five first downs in the first half, gaining less than 100…

Fall Camp Notes
August 27th:
Anything you can do, I can do better …
Take that, Steve Fairchild! In a move apparently designed to get fans in their seats on time for the 5:00 p.m. kickoff on September 6th (good seats still available!), Dan Hawkins on Thursday indicated that he will not name a starting quarterback until the day of the game. With CSU also being reluctant to name a starter, this could be the first opener in memory when neither starting quarterback is known prior to kickoff.
The lack of information may give each team’s offense a slight edge in preparation against the defenses, forcing the opposing defensive coordinator to prepare for more sets than they might have otherwise. Still the fact remains that while both teams have different personnel than a year before, neither team’s offensive philosophy has changed significantly.
My uneducated guess – both teams will have their starters in place by this weekend. The quarterbacks will know it, their coaches will know it, and their teammates will know it The quarterback is too important a position to not have your starter taking the vast majority of reps the week before the game.
But it does make for good…
