Colorado State – We waited nine months for this?

2009 Season
September 6th – Boulder Colorado State 23, Colorado 17
Colorado State quarterback Grant Stucker passed for 208 yards, while running back John Mosure had two scores in leading the Rams to a 23-17 victory over Colorado in Boulder. The win was the first in Folsom Field for Colorado State since 1986, sending most of the near-sellout crowd of 53,168 home in dismay.
The Colorado Buffaloes’ 2009 season started about as badly as a season can.
The Rams took the opening kickoff smartly down the field, taking only six plays to cover 80 yards, with Mosure scoring from a yard out to give Colorado State a 7-0 lead just 3:13 into the game. The Buffs’ response? Three-and-out, gaining six yards.
Two series later, the score was up to 14-0, as the Rams took advantage of an interception and a personal foul penalty to start their drive at mid-field. The drive took ten plays, but the result was the same – touchdown, Colorado State, with Stucker and Mosure connecting from 14 yards out.
While the Colorado State offense was moving smoothly, the Colorado offense was anemic. The Buffs generated all of five first downs in the first half, gaining less than 100…

The View from Row 72 – Time Management
Walking out of Folsom Field to the chants of “It’s great … to be … a CSU Ram!” was difficult to take. The last time I had to endure that at a home game was my third year of law school, and that, my friends, was a long time ago.
My feelings since the final gun have vacillated between disappointment, frustration, and anger. My concerns can be consolidated into the broad heading of “Time Management”, with three areas to discuss:
First, I am at odds with time management with respect to how the offense was run against CSU.
Yes, the defensive secondary, billed as strength, was consistently loose in its coverage (one disclaimer allowed – sophomore safety Patrick Mahnke sprained his ankle on Friday, and was replaced in the starting lineup by Ray Polk, who this time last year was a running back recruit). True, the running game was pathetic, and the line play on both sides of the ball was three steps below mediocre.
Yet in the stands, the most fervent cries during the game were spent on the annoyingly slow play calling. Even late in the game, with the Buffs…

Finally, it’s the Buffs turn to play. Running out onto Folsom Field for the opener against the Rams, the Buff players will be well aware that their competition for the remainder of the 2009 season went 10-1 in the opening weekend, with only next week’s opponent, Toledo, losing in week one (the Big 12 overall also went 10-1, with only #3 Oklahoma’s 14-13 loss to #20 BYU keeping the conference from a perfect slate).
Still, there is reason to dissect the results. While it is true that some of this fall’s opponents fared better than expected this weekend, some did not fare as well …
Purdue 52, Toledo 31. If you are looking at the glass as half empty, you are concerned that senior Rocket quarterback Aaron Opelt passed for 423 yards and three touchdowns against the Boilermakers, and that star receiver Stephen Williams had 15 catches for 185 yards and two touchdowns. Lesson learned: If CSU’s Grant Stucker – he of the five passes in his career – has a good day against the Buffs, next Friday could be a long night indeed.
From the glass half full side, we have the 315 yards rushing posted by…

Colorado State – 2009
- The Rams went bowling last season, but it wasn’t due to stellar play by the defense. Colorado State allowed 393 points in 2008 (38 to the Buffs), an average of 30.2 points per game. The point total allowed has only been surpassed twice in school history (413 points in 1972; 502 points in 1981). While the 2008 Rams went 7-6, the other two Ram teams who gave up as many points settled for a combined record of 1-22.
- Steve Fairchild set a record for wins (7), by a first year coach at CSU (the record at CU is Rick Neuheisel’s ten wins in 1995). Four other Ram coaches earned five wins in their debut, including Sonny Lubick (5-6 in 1993).
- Sonny Lubick left the Colorado State program at the end of the 2007 season. His records speak for themselves:
- overall record at CSU of 108-74
- six conference titles won or shared
- nine bowl games (CSU has played in a total of 12 in its history)
- four seasons with over ten wins (the only four such seasons in CSU history), but …
- 4-9 record v. Colorado
- The 2008 CU/CSU game set a first,

College football games played in early September remain a relatively new creation. The Buffs first played on September 6th in 1986. Overall, Colorado has played only five games on that date in their history, compiling a 4-1 overall record. Included on the list, ironically, was last season’s game against Eastern Washington.
CU on September 6th: 4-1. Games Played: 1986 – CSU – L 23-7; 1990 Stanford – W 21-17; 1997 – CSU W 31-21; 2003 – UCLA W 16-14; 2008 – Eastern Washington – W 31-24
September 6th – Colorado – best game on this date
#8 Colorado 31, #24 Colorado State 21 – September 6, 1997.
The 8th-ranked Buffs rallied from a 14-7 halftime deficit to defeat the Rams in Boulder, 31-21.
The game started well enough, as the Buffs took the opening kickoff down the field for a score. An 11-play drive was capped off by a one-yard plunge by Herchell Troutman, giving Colorado a 7-0 lead. The rest of the first half, though, was all Colorado State, and the Rams took a 14-7 lead into halftime.
On the third play of the second half, CSU quarterback Moses Moreno was picked off, with the interception by CU linebacker…

For those of you who are new to CU at the Game, I would like to introduce you to “Stuart’s T.I.P.S.” for the game. Every week, I will break down the upcoming game, and the Buffs’ opponent, into four categories:
- T – Talent. Quite simply, which team has the better horses.
- I – Intangibles. Momentum, home field, weather – outside factors which will play a role in the outcome.
- P – Preparation. Is either team coming off a short week? Are there injuries? A rivalry game the following week?
- S – Statistics. If you follow CU at the Game, you know you are going to be inundated with stats.
With these factors in mind, let’s take a look at the Buffs’ opening game opponent, the Colorado State Rams.
T – Talent
Frankly, if this is a category in which the Buffs come in second behind the Rams, its time for Colorado fans to take up knitting. Colorado has had, does have, and always should have, more talent on the field. As we know all too well, however, talent does not always win out.
The 2009 season is no exception. The Rams are hurting in several key positions, and…
