— September 7th – Boulder          No. 17 Colorado 34, San Diego State 14 — The Buffs survived the loss of quarterback Craig Ochs to injury to win their home-opener against San Diego State, 34-14. Ochs suffered a concussion late in the second quarter and did not return. Senior quarterback Robert Hodge teamed with a “bend-but-don’t-break” Colorado defense in the second half to help the Buffs pull away from the Aztecs. — October 28th – at Oklahoma          No. 3 Colorado 20, Oklahoma 3 — Colorado used a stifling defense and just enough offense to take a 20-3 decision over Oklahoma in one of the biggest wins in Colorado football history. Raising its season record to 8-0 for the first time in sixty-two years, the Buffs gave notice to future opponents that its defense was just as good as its offense.  Colorado held the Sooners to only 248 yards of total offense, including completions on only three-of-22 passes in the stiff afternoon …

— National and Big Eight recap – 1980 — In college football in 1980 it was the Year of the Dog – as in the Bulldogs from the University of Georgia. Georgia went 12-0, earning its 2nd-ever national championship by defeating Notre Dame, 17-10, in the Sugar Bowl. The Bulldogs were led by running back Herschel Walker. Notre Dame finished the season on a two game losing streak, falling to 9-2-1 in Dan Devine’s last season as head coach. In the Big Eight, Oklahoma continued its domination of the league. …
