No. 23 USC 47, Colorado 29

//posted 11.26.2013

The No. 23 USC Trojans took advantage of two first half Colorado turnovers to build a 23-0 halftime lead, coasting to a 47-29 win over the Buffs in Boulder. The Buffs’ point total matched the temperature at kickoff, 29-degrees, with only 36,005 on hand to witness the Buffs’ home finale.

USC quarterback Cody Kessler went 19-of-28 for 184 yards and two touchdowns, while running back Javorius Allen had 20 carries for 143 yards and three scores to lead the Trojans. The Buffs, held to 73 yards of total offense in the first half, managed four second half touchdowns to make the score more respectable.

Freshman quarterback Sefo Liufau finished 17-of-33 for 188 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Paul Richardson, shut out in the first half, finished with eight catches for 88 yards and a touchdown, while Michael Adkins led the CU rushing attack with 14 carries for 63 yards and a touchdown.

Colorado lost to No. 23, USC, 47-29, in a game which was not as close as the score might indicate. The Buffs managed all of five first downs in the first half, to go with 73 yards of total offense, falling behind 23-0 at the break. A total of 22 consolation points, and 172 of CU’s 312 yards of total offense, came in the fourth quarter with the game well decided.

The loss condemned the 4-7 Buffs to an eighth straight losing season (the previous longest stretch of futility, in 124 years of football, was six years – 1979-84).

With only the Utah game left on the calendar, perhaps it’s a good time to take stock of Year One of the Mike MacIntyre era.

Colorado 41, California 24

//posted 11.17.2013

Sefo Liufau threw for a career-high 364 yards and Paul Richardson set a team record for receiving yards in a season to help Colorado snap a 14-game conference losing streak by beating slumping California 41-24 on a windy Saturday in Boulder.

Wind gusts of up to 43 mph buffeted the two team struggling to post their first Pac-12 conference victory of the season. In the end, Colorado had 485 yards of total offense, with Liufau finding Richardson and Nelson Spruce for 140 receiving yards apiece. Christian Powell added 60 rushing yards and a touchdown as the Buffs were able to defeat a conference foe at home for the first time in two full years.

Blown Away

Officially, the 38,252 who attended Colorado’s 41-24 victory over Cal endured halftime temperatures in the mid-40’s, with winds “gusting 37 to 43 mph”.

True, wind gusts of 40 miles per hour or more are not all that uncommon in Boulder.

But CU picking up conference wins?

Now that’s a rarity.

For the first time in two full years, Colorado won a Pac-12 game at home. With a 41-27 victory over Cal, the Buffs finally brought to an end a 14-game conference losing streak – a streak six games longer than any similar bouts with futility in school history.
