— National and Big Eight recap – 1991 — For the second consecutive year – after occurring only twice in the past twenty – the college football season ended with a split national championship. The Miami Hurricanes went 12-0 in 1991 to win the Associated Press title, it’s fourth championship in nine years. Miami was forced to share the limelight, however, with the Washington Huskies, who also went 12-0. Washington was awarded the national championship by the Coaches’ poll, later re-named the CNN/USA Today poll. Both teams went 11-0 in …

Scapled in San Diego Still without my wallet (See: “Disneyland – Here I come!”), and having been disappointed by my first two days in California, Brad and I set out again. This day=s objective – San Diego. The way we figured it, we could make the short trip down to San Diego, hit Sea World during the afternoon, and still have time to make it to Jack Murphy Stadium in time to scalp some tickets for the sold out Oklahoma State/Wyoming Holiday Bowl game. The first part of the plan went well, …

Disneyland – Here I come!

//posted 12.1.1988

— Disneyland, here I come — I had missed Colorado=s first trip to the Freedom Bowl in Anaheim in 1985, but I did not want to miss this one. Plans were made to make the pilgrimage to California, which, of course, included meeting up with Brad. We flew to Los Angeles a few days before the Freedome Bowl, which was to be played the evening of December 29th. Our plans included making several Atouristy@ trips during our five day stay, including stops at Disneyland and Universal Studios. A trip to San Diego was …

The Irish Heisman trophy winner from 1987, Tim Brown, had left for the NFL, but Notre Dame remained fully stocked in 1988. Sophomore flanker Ricky Watters and freshman split end Raghib Ismail supplied speed to …

— National and Big Eight recap – 1987 — A pattern established in 1982-83 repeated itself in 1986-87. In 1983, the Miami Hurricanes won the school’s first national championship, a year after Penn State had won its first crown. In 1987, a year after Penn State recorded national championship No. 2, the 1987 Hurricanes again followed suit, giving both schools two titles in the 1980’s. Led by offensive stars quarterback Steve Walsh, running back Melvin Bratton, and wide receivers Michael Irvin and Brian Blades, Miami went 12-0 in 1987. The …

Oklahoma finished the year 11-1, losing only to Miami in an early season match-up. — National and Big Eight recap – 1984 — In 1984, Brigham Young University became the fourth Division 1-A football team in succession to win its first-ever national championship, capturing the 1984 crown with a 13-0 season. Despite its unblemished record, BYU had its share of critics. The naysayers arguments were only enhanced when BYU just got by an average (6-5) Michigan squad in the Holiday Bowl. Bound by contract to the Holiday Bowl, the Cougars had no option as to bowl or opponent. To its credit, though, BYU did …

— 1983 Preseason — While it was certainly true that Colorado, with a 2-8-1 record in 1982, was mired in a four-season long slump without a winning season, there was still reason for optimism in Boulder as the 1982 season came to a close. There had been moments in 1982 – a 12-0 shutout of Washington State in the second game of the season (and on the road!); a record-setting passing day of 361 yards against Nebraska (and trailing only 20-14 at the start of the fourth quarter!); a comeback …
