The Wrong Anniversary

//posted 10.26.2014

The 2014 season for the University of Colorado marks a multitude of anniversaries.

It’s the 125 season of collegiate football in Boulder, and the game against No. 25 UCLA represented the 100th Homecoming in CU history. This fall also represents the 90th season of playing football in Folsom Field and the 80th anniversary of CU adopting the nickname “Buffaloes”.

On the field, the 2014 season marks the 40th anniversary of the Buffs taking down Alabama in the Liberty Bowl, the 35th anniversary of the first college game televised by ESPN (Oregon at Colorado), as well as the 25th anniversary of CU’s perfect 11-0 regular season in 1989.

This weekend, the 20th anniversary of the 1994 team was being celebrated. Heisman trophy winner Rashaan Salaam, who ran for 2,055 yards that season, was the grand marshal for Homecoming, with the “Miracle in Michigan” being celebrated last month on its 20th anniversary.

Nowhere to Turn

//posted 10.19.2014

It’s not like we haven’t seen this before.

In a 56-28 rout by USC, Colorado was out-manned, out-coached, and out-talented by a superior opponent.

We thought the Hawkins years were bad … the loss to Montana State, the 58-0 loss to Missouri, the 54-38 embarrassment at Toledo, the absurd collapse against Kansas.

But that was just the appetizer.

Hawkins was bad; Embree was worse.

The Jon Embree experiment was a colossal failure. It started with the “brick game” loss at Hawai’i, and only went downhill from there. Some of the scores during the Embree era read like misprints: 48-7, 52-24, 45-2, 48-14, 42-17, 45-6, 69-14, 42-14, 51-17, 50-6, 70-14, 48-0, 56-31, 38-3. It was so horrible, it didn’t seem real.

Enter Mike MacIntyre.

Which was harder to take?

Last season in Corvallis, Colorado stayed with Oregon State for almost a half. By the end of the third quarter, though, it was 38-3, with the Buffs posting a pair of fourth quarter consolation touchdowns in a 44-17 final.

This season in Boulder, Colorado stayed with Oregon State throughout the entire game. Falling behind 14-0 early, the Buffs rallied to take a 21-20 lead, and were poised for a game-winning touchdown drive before failing to move the sticks in OSU territory in a 36-31 loss.

In 2013, the loss to the Beavers was not really a shock; the domination by the Beavers in the second half pretty much expected. Yes, it was painful to sit there in the rain as the Beaver fans celebrated touchdown after touchdown, but there was a numbness to it … after all, we’d been there, done that.

In 2014, the loss to the Beavers was a shock; there was no domination by the opposition. Fans left Folsom Field muttering about what woulda/coulda/shoulda been.
