BYU Scouting Report: Will Gaudy Stats Hold up in Boulder?
From the Daily Camera …
5 Cougars to Watch
QB Bear Bachmeier: Enrolled at Stanford during the spring, but transferred to BYU this summer and won the starting job, becoming the first true freshman quarterback in school history to start the season opener. He has completed 66.7% of his passes for 518 yards and four touchdowns, while also rushing for four scores.
LB Isaiah Glasker: Led the Big 12 in tackles for loss (14.5) in 2024, while posting 70 total tackles. This season, he has 13 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, a sack and a forced fumble.
LB Jack Kelly: Former Weber State transfer was one of the Big 12’s top newcomers last year, posting 51 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and five sacks. This season he has 13 tackles, 4.5 TFLs and three sacks. In his career, he has 24.5 sacks and eight forced fumbles.
RB LJ Martin: Senior has rushed for 1,578 yards and 12 touchdowns in his career. This season, he has 342 yards and a touchdown, while posting 8.6 yards per carry. Not a major weapon as a receiver, but he has caught 23 passes for 163 yards and three touchdowns in his career.
WR Chase Roberts: One of BYU’s top targets for three years, and a preseason selection on the All-Big 12 team. He’s caught 127 passes for 1,969 yards and 13 touchdowns in his career. He has 11 catches for 185 yards and a touchdown this season.
When BYU has the ball …
It was a crazy offseason, as the Cougars lost quarterback Jake Retzlaff, a returning starter, over the summer. But, true freshman Bear Bachmeier has been very good in his place, impressing teammates with his poise. While he has thrown the ball well, BYU has been run-heavy to this point, with 56.7% of the snaps and 58.8% of the yards coming on the ground. BYU rotates several tight ends, which they’ll use in the passing game, but they’re also good blockers in a run game that features LJ Martin. CU’s defensive line, which has been hit with injuries, will be tested. The Buffs have also missed a lot of tackles, which has contributed to big plays by the opposition. Still, the Cougars have been impressed with the talent the Buffs have on defense. “This will be the most talented team we’ve played yet this year,” BYU offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick said. “A lot of team speed and they’re tough and really well coached. … We have tons of respect for these guys. We know they’re a good team and we’ve got to go play at their place.”

CU 1-7 against ranked teams under Coach Prime: “They know the whole world is watching”
From the Daily Camera … In Sanders’ first game at CU, he led the Buffs to a 45-42 upset of No. 17 TCU on the road, on Sept. 2, 2023. CU is 0-7 against ranked teams since then, however, including the loss in the Alamo Bowl. Dating back to 2019, CU is 1-17 in its last 18 games against ranked foes.
This year, the Buffs have yet to face a top 25 opponent, but they’ve struggled in their two biggest tests.
Georgia Tech came into Boulder on Aug. 29 and pushed the Buffs around in the trenches for a 27-20 victory. And on Sept. 12, CU traveled to Houston for the Big 12 opener and got pushed around by the unranked and upstart Cougars, 36-20.
“In Houston, we played like garbage, man,” Sanders said. “We want to come out there and give you the best that we possible can give you on every phase of the game. And these young men, they want to do the same.”
BYU will test the Buffs physically as much or more than Georgia Tech or Houston did, and Sanders is hoping his team is up for the challenge, especially on the offensive and defensive lines.
“You start at practice, start by tackling, start by hitting, thudding,” Sanders said of trying to get a team to be more physical. “Maybe not using your arms, not wrapping up, but getting there with your feet to practice getting there, period; everybody’s getting to the ball. Physicality is an attitude. Then it becomes the effort. But it starts with the attitude, then the effort.”
Attitude and effort has been there at times, but the Buffs are striving for consistency and looking to, of all places, their special teams unit as an example. Sanders has repeatedly applauded the consistent excellence of punter Damon Greaves and kickers Buck Buchanan and Alejandro Mata.
“We want consistency all across the board like we’re getting from those guys,” Sanders said.
Do that and the Buffs believe they can turn a bumpy start to the season into a special year.
“I’m saying (to the team), ‘Well, why can’t we do that on every play?’” Sanders said. “‘Why did this guy flash this play and you don’t see him again until he flashed later on in the game? Why not be consistent and be dominant and have your name called consistently?’”
The quest for consistency continues Saturday in a game that’s much more about this team than it is about what happened in December.
“They know the whole world is watching,” Sanders said. “It’s a national televised game, night game. It is what it is and we’ve got to play. We want to come out victorious, and we will if we execute the things that we’re capable of doing. And this is a darn good, physical, capable team.”

Wide receiver Omarion Miller stepping up at the right time: “Now I feel good about myself”
From the Daily Camera … Omarion Miller’s breakout game last week against Wyoming came at a good time, for the Colorado Buffaloes and for Miller.
A junior receiver whose star potential has never been in question during his time at Colorado, Miller had a slow start to the season, including an injury that caused him to miss a game against Delaware.
Last Saturday, however, he caught six passes for 88 yards and a touchdown — his first in nearly a full year, since Sept. 21, 2024.
A 6-foot-2, 210-pound junior from Vivian, La., Miller’s career has been filled with flashes of brilliance and some injury issues.
“Get healthy and stay ready,” receivers coach Jason Phillips said of his message to Miller. “Any time he’s on the field, he’s a threat, so we just gotta make sure that he does the right things off the field, as far as taking care of himself, which he’s done a good job of that.
“He’s went outside of what we provide here to get physical therapy and those types of things, so he can stay healthy and stay on the field.”
Miller, who missed the final seven games of the 2024 season due to injury, said he had some internal struggles when injuries hit but has been able to overcome those.
“It’s definitely difficult,” he said. “I was in a bad mental state at first, but I had the right people around me, telling me good things in my ear. I kind of overcame those things, and now I feel good about myself.”

BYU game attendees to be treated to halftime drone show
Press release from CUBuffs.com … Fans in attendance at the University of Colorado home football game against BYU on Saturday, Sept. 27 will be treated to a halftime drone show spectacular thanks to a partnership between CU Athletics and the America 250 – Colorado 150 Commission. In addition to providing an incredible spectacle for fans in attendance at the game, the drone show will be the official launch of the commission’s statewide drone show series in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the state and the University of Colorado Boulder.
The show is produced by Brightflight Drone Shows and will feature hundreds of drones synchronized to display iconic scenes from around Colorado and Boulder, including the Flatirons, Ralphie and even Coach Prime. The show will last approximately 10 minutes and musical accompaniment will be provided by the Golden Buffalo Marching Band. The show is possible thanks to support from the Colorado Tourism Office, UCHealth, and Urban Outfitters.
“We are so excited to partner with the America 250 – Colorado 150 Commission to provide this incredible experience for Buffs fans,” said Rick George, Colorado Athletic Director. “This will be the first drone show held during a CU football game, and we’re proud to officially launch the celebration of the 150th anniversary of our state, as well as the 250th anniversary of our country.”
“We’re launching the statewide drone show series in a big way—under the lights of Folsom Field. The CU home game provides the perfect stage to kick off the first of 150 shows that will travel across Colorado, bringing a shared celebration of these historic milestones to communities large and small,” shared Timothy Wolfe, America 250 – Colorado 150 Commission Co-Chair and Director of the Colorado Tourism Office.
In addition to celebrations statewide, CU Boulder is currently preparing a full schedule of celebratory events and programming to celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2026. More information on the university’s 150th festivities, which will begin in January, will be announced in the days ahead.
“The University of Colorado Boulder is honored to kick off the Stories in the Sky drone show series in partnership with the America 250-150 Commission,” said CU Boulder Chancellor Justin Schwartz. “It is a fitting start to our own 150th anniversary celebrations and a tribute to Colorado’s rich history.”

CU List of Injured Grows: “Prayerfully, we shouldn’t lose anyone for a couple of weeks”
From the Daily Camera … While CU won the game, it was a costly night on the injury front.
Star left tackle Jordan Seaton hobbled to the locker room at halftime and did not return. In the second half, right guard Zy Crisler and running backs Simeon Price and DeKalon Taylor all went down with injuries and didn’t return.
Sanders wasn’t concerned about the long-term for any of them, however.
“Jordan Seaton is alright,” he said. “Simeon and DK, they’re cool. They’re good. Prayerfully, we shouldn’t lose anyone for a couple of weeks, but they went out to take care of themselves. We’re praying that they’re gonna be OK.”
CU was also hit hard on the defense line. Starter Brandon Davis-Swain and key rotational player Tawfiq Thomas were both injured during the week and didn’t play. Gavriel Lightfoot continues to be sidelined, too.
Then the Buffs lost a fourth defensive lineman when Anquin Barnes was ejected for targeting in the second half. Barnes will have to sit out the first half of next week’s game against BYU, too.
“Thank God for the depth (on the offensive and defensive lines),” Sanders said. “It’s paying off really well, especially just think about a season ago. Losing a couple linemen, what it would have been like. I mean, it would have been hell, pure hell. … Thank God for the recruiting team that we have because they got the depth that we need.”
Defensive end Samuel Okunlola, cornerback RJ Johnson and safety Terrance Love also missed the game with injuries.

Ralphie VII shines in her debut
Form the Daily Camera … Colorado could not have scripted a better debut for its newest live mascot, Ralphie VII.
The one-year-old bison, who is the latest in a long time of live mascots to run before CU games at Folsom Field, dazzled the sold-out crowd with a speedy run before Saturday’s game against Wyoming, sprinting past the 50-yard line before making the turn back to her trailer.
She repeated the effort just before the second half, showing energy and speed that her predecessor, Ralphie VI, rarely did.
“I heard she was energetic,” CU head coach Deion Sanders said. “She started out well and then finished strong, unlike us.”
Sanders’ Buffs started slow and didn’t finish the way he wanted, but still rolled past Wyoming 37-20 in Ralphie VII’s debut.
Although Ralphie energized the crowd, Sanders said he wasn’t sure she impacted the team. But, he gave Ralphie VII some love for her debut.
“Ralphie did a wonderful job, doing her doggone thing,” he said. “I’m thankful. I’m happy that the new Ralphie is doing her thing because the old Ralphie said. ‘I’m done with this.’”
