Colorado blew a 14-0 first half lead for the second week in succession, falling on the road to TCU, 35-21. The Buffs committed four turnovers, including three interceptions by quarterback Kaidon Salter. The final score was not indicative of the game, with the Horned Frogs not surging past CU in total yards (369-343) until a salt-in-the-wound 21-yard touchdown pass from TCU quarterback Josh Hoover to wide receiver Eric McAllister with 19 seconds remaining.

Kaidon Salter finished 18-for-29 for 217 yards, with two passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown. Both passing touchdowns went to Omarion Miller, going for six yards in the first half and 31 yards in the second.

“It’s one thing to lose, then it’s another thing to feel like you beat yourselves,” Coach Prime said of the loss. “When you’re beating beaten – we were beaten in Houston, but these other games we had opportunity, ample opportunity, to win the games.

“It’s frustrating because I’m seeing what you see. I felt like, and this is no disrespect to TCU, because they’re well-coached, they did a wonderful job, the quarterback made plays; I feel like we’re the better team. I felt like that last week, the week before. But yet we’re still in this situation.”

The loss left the Buffs with a 2-4 overall record, 0-3 in Big 12 play, tied with West Virginia for the worst record in the Big 12.

Colorado 37, Wyoming 20

Ralphie VII made her debut in style, leading the Buffs onto the field before the second-largest Folsom Field crowd in 17 years (53,422), with the Buffs going on to defeat Wyoming, 37-20.  Quarterback Kaidon Salter more than did his part, returning to the starting lineup after sitting out the loss to Houston the previous weekend. Salter passed for 304 yards and three touchdowns, completing scoring passes of 29 yards to Omarion Miller, 68 yards to Sincere Brown, and 47 yards to Joseph Williams while also running for 86 yards and a 35-yard touchdown run on 11 carries.

“Every chance that I got today, I tried to take advantage of the opportunity,” Salter explained. “And I know that I got big guys out there, big playmakers, and if I throw it up, it’s 75/25 their way.”

Overall, the Buffs had 497 yards of total offense, including 193 yards on the ground. Wyoming did not go quietly, keeping the game close throughout much of the evening, but the Cowboys were never closer than two scores after the Buffs took a 14-3 lead early in the second quarter.

“Kaidon Salter came back and played his butt off,” Coach Prime said of his starting quarterback. “He had a couple of downs, but the majority were ups, which overshadowed the downs, and he made some plays that a quarterback is going to  have to do off script. And he made it happen. The timing was impeccable, and he made some big throws, some big runs, especially the run at the end. That’s the guy we wanted to see, and we’re seeing him at his best. I’m glad you’re getting the chance to see him shine. He hasn’t reached that potential yet, but he’s getting more and more comfortable with everything.”

Houston dominated the first and third quarters, opening up a 13-0 first half lead on the way to a convincing 36-20 victory over Colorado. Cougar quarterback Conner Weigman completed 15-of-24 passes for 222 yards, with 17 carries for 83 yards and two touchdowns. Houston kicker Ethan Sanchez went 5-of-6 on field goal attempts, with a long of 52, as the Cougars scored on eight drives, punting only once all game.

Ryan Staub started the second game of his career, finishing 19-of-35 for 204 yards and a late 37-yard touchdown pass to Joseph Williams after the game was decided. Staub was also sacked three times, and was intercepted twice.

The Buffs clawed their way back to make it a 16-14 game at halftime, with a Simeon Price 38-yard scoring run and a Zach Atkins recovery of a Ryan Staub fumble in the end zone giving CU new life. In the third quarter, however, two Houston drives at up over 13 minutes of game clock, making it a 26-14 game. Two fourth quarter interceptions – CU’s first two turnovers of the season – ended any hope of a Buff comeback.

“Nobody could have told me that was going to go down like that,” Coach Prime said. “There’s no way.

“With the week of preparation that we had, the meetings that we had, the film study and the preparation that we had, no one could have told me that it was going to turn out like this. But … it wasn’t good. It wasn’t good at all. I take full responsibility of the foolishness that went on out there that … we tried to call it football. It wasn’t that.”

Georgia Tech quarterback Haynes King faked a pitch and scampered for a 45-yard touchdown with 1:07 remaining as Georgia Tech overcame a turnover-filled start to beat Colorado, 27-20. King finished with 156 yards rushing and three touchdowns, also throwing for 143 yards. Georgia Tech finished with 463 yards of total offense, 320 on the ground. The CU offense opened the season with just 305 yards of total offense – 159 through the air; 143 on the ground.

Coach Prime was disappointed in watching CU’s defense give up 320 yards rushing. “We’ve got to be more explosive, more definitive, more decisive with what we’re doing with the ball on offense”, said Coach Prime, who saw his overall record at CU dip to 13-13. “They ran for 320 yards. You’re not gonna win with those statistics. Tried many things. We tried blitzing, trying to fill every gap, but we couldn’t get the job done. They were much more physical than we were.”

Liberty transfer quarterback Kaidon Salter, making his first start as a Buff, completed 17-of-28 passes for 159 yards, including an eight-yard touchdown pass to running back Dekalon Taylor in the first quarter. Salter also contributed 43 yards on 11-carries, including a seven-yard touchdown run. The Colorado rushing attack, which netted 146 yards on the night, was led by Micah Welch, who had 64 yards on 11 carries.

A sell-out crowd of 52,868 was on hand for the Friday night opener, with the Buffs falling to Georgia Tech in the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

Avery Johnson rebounded from throwing a costly interception by finding Jayce Brown for a 50-yard touchdown with 2:14 remaining as No. 18 Kansas State beat Colorado 31-28. The Buffs were without All-Everything Travis Hunter in the second half, also losing wide receivers Jimmy Horn and Omarion Miller, but still rallied from a 21-7 third quarter deficit to take a late lead.

Shedeur Sanders went 34-for-40 for 388 yards and three touchdowns, but it was not enough to overcome a school-record minus-29 yards rushing. Sanders was sacked six times, finishing the game with minus-50 yards rushing. Wide receiver Omarion Miller led the Buff receivers with eight catches for 145 yards, but was lost for the game after a 51-yard catch in the fourth quarter.

Kansas State quarterback Avery Johnson was held in check for much of the game, with 138 yards passing for the game … before two late completions went for 86 yards to give the Wildcats the lead for good. The Colorado defense, which hadn’t given up 100 yards to a running back, or 100 yards to a receiver all season, were torched for 182 yards on 25 carries by running back DJ Giddens, and gave up 121 yards and two touchdowns on six catches by KSU wideout Jayce Brown.

“The big plays and surrendering 224 yards rushing”, Coach Prime said of the loss. “Come on, because that’s clock as well. That keeps our offense off the field. And they need opportunities. We need opportunities. I’m proud of them, man, I’m always proud of them. This is a totally different team. This team has heart. They have integrity, they’re tough, and they love to play this game. We just came up short. We got to just learn how to win these particular games. We’ve done so this year as well. But that was one that we should have got the play in there.”

Colorado 38, Baylor 31, OT

Travis Hunter knocked the ball loose from Baylor running back Dominic Richardson at the CU goal line in overtime, with the fumble recovered by the Buffs to give Colorado an unlikely 38-31 victory. The Buffs had no business getting to overtime in the first place, but a 43-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Shedeur Sanders to wide receiver LaJohntay Wester as time expired sent the game to an extra period. In CU’s overtime possession, Micah Welch scored on a one-yard run to give the Buffs their first lead since holding a 7-3 advantage late in the first quarter.

Shedeur Sanders completed 25-of-41 passes for 341 yards and two touchdowns. Sanders also scored on a two-yard run, CU’s first rushing touchdown of the season. Travis Hunter had seven catches for 130 yards, while also making the game-winning play on defense. Overall, the Buffs had 431 yards of total offense, while holding Baylor to 314 yards. Baylor used big plays, including a 100-yard kickoff return and a 45-yard touchdown run by quarterback Sawyer Robertson on a a fourth-and-short, building a 24-10 lead late in the second quarter before the Buffs began their comeback. The Bears squandered a chance to put the game away late, but Baylor kicker Isaiah Hankins missed a 45-yard field goal attempt with 2:45 left with the Bears leading by seven, setting up CU’s Hail Mary to tie the game on the final play of regulation.

“A great, great, great, great win,” Coach Prime said in his postgame press conference. “Young men were resilient. They never gave up. They never surrendered. The coaches were still inspired. I mean, all the way to the end, they were still calling and devising things … I don’t like how it played out, but I love the results. I think we’re so much better than what we’re showing you at times. We keep showing you glimpses of running game. We show you glimpses of us playing tough football defensively. We show you we can throw the ball all around, and then we just stall for a series or two and surrender something foolishly.  But I’m pleased.”

No. 23 UCLA 28, Colorado 16

//posted 10.30.2023

The Colorado offense, last in the nation in sacks allowed, was exposed early and often as No. 23 UCLA slowly pulled away in the second half, posting a 28-16    win before a sold out Rose Bowl crowd. Buff quarterback Shedeur Sanders was harassed and hit all night, suffering seven sacks and numerous other hits. A strong early effort by the Buff defense, which generated four first half turnovers, was wasted as the CU offense netted all of three points off of those opportunities.

The UCLA offense, kept to a 7-6 lead at halftime, methodically pulled away in the second half, finishing with 487 yards of total offense. The Buff offense, meanwhile, posted only 255 yards of total offense … with 86 yards of that total coming in CU’s only touchdown drive of the contest late in the fourth quarter. Shedeur Sanders completed 27-of-43 passes for only 217 yards, with other totals – 24 pressures; 17 hits; 13 knockdowns; seven sacks – telling the true story of the game.

“Offensively, we’ve got to improve,” Coach Prime said. “Our quarterback is taking a beating. (Shedeur Sanders) got an injection at halftime just to block some of the pain… We have to do a better job of protecting him … Running the football, we’ve had a couple lineman go down (with injuries), but that’s no excuse.”

No. 8 USC 48, Colorado 41

//posted 10.2.2023

Colorado rallied from a 48-21 third quarter deficit to make it a game, but nonetheless lost to USC for the 17th-straight time, falling 48-41 before a sellout crowd of 54.032. Shedeur Sanders threw for 371 yards and three touchdowns, while running for another, but it was not enough to keep up with USC quarterback Caleb Williams, who threw for six touchdowns and 403 yards. For the game, the Buffs actually out-gained the Trojans, with 564 total yards to 498 for USC, but the first half once again was the Buffs’ failing, with USC taking a 34-14 lead into the break.

Freshman wide receiver Omarion Miller, who had no receptions on the season coming into the game, collected seven passes for 196 yards and a touchdown. Jimmy Horn, Jr. contributed two touchdowns and 84 yards with his seven catches, while tight end Michael Harrison had six catches for 44 yards and a 21-yard touchdown. The Buff rushing “attack”, which had only 223 total yards in the first four games of the season, came alive with 193 yards on 45 carries. Running back Anthony Hankerson led the Buffs with 16 carries for 74 yards, posting a two-yard touchdown run.

“Wonderful game. They played their hearts out,” said Coach Prime. “I addressed the team and told them I love each of them, coaches included, because they were resilient. They did not give up and they had multiple, multiple opportunities to give up. They fought to the end. We sustained injuries, meaning the next man up came in and did their thing”.

Despite the second straight defeat, and despite having a defense which had given up 90 points in its last two games, Coach Prime was defiant. “If you can’t see what’s coming with CU football, you’ve lost your mind”, Sanders said. “You’re just a flat out hater. If you can’t see what’s going on and what’s going to transpire over the next several months. Something’s wrong with you.”
