Houston 36, Colorado 20

Houston dominated the first and third quarters, opening up a 13-0 first half lead on the way to a convincing 36-20 victory over Colorado. Cougar quarterback Conner Weigman completed 15-of-24 passes for 222 yards, with 17 carries for 83 yards and two touchdowns. Houston kicker Ethan Sanchez went 5-of-6 on field goal attempts, with a long of 52, as the Cougars scored on eight drives, punting only once all game.

Ryan Staub started the second game of his career, finishing 19-of-35 for 204 yards and a late 37-yard touchdown pass to Joseph Williams after the game was decided. Staub was also sacked three times, and was intercepted twice.

The Buffs clawed their way back to make it a 16-14 game at halftime, with a Simeon Price 38-yard scoring run and a Zach Atkins recovery of a Ryan Staub fumble in the end zone giving CU new life. In the third quarter, however, two Houston drives at up over 13 minutes of game clock, making it a 26-14 game. Two fourth quarter interceptions – CU’s first two turnovers of the season – ended any hope of a Buff comeback.

“Nobody could have told me that was going to go down like that,” Coach Prime said. “There’s no way.

“With the week of preparation that we had, the meetings that we had, the film study and the preparation that we had, no one could have told me that it was going to turn out like this. But … it wasn’t good. It wasn’t good at all. I take full responsibility of the foolishness that went on out there that … we tried to call it football. It wasn’t that.”

Colorado 31, Delaware 7

Third-string quarterback Ryan Staub led the Buffs to two back-to-back touchdowns on either side of halftime, allowing the Buffs to pull away from Delaware. Staub completed a a 21-yard touchdown pass to Dekalon Taylor with nine seconds left in the first half, then a 71-yard touchdown to Sincere Brown three plays into the third quarter, turning a 10-7 game into a 24-7 advantage, with the Buffs going on to a 31-7 home victory.

Coach Prime gave each of his quarterbacks two series to open the game. Kaidon Salter led the Buff offense to ten points in his drives, including a nine-yard scoring run on CU’s opening possession. Freshman Julian Lewis came in for the next two drives, but the Buff offense failed to score. Then, after Delaware scored in the final minute of the half to make it a 10-7 game, Staub’s heroics gave CU a three-score advantage. A 10-yard touchdown run by Micah Welch early in the fourth quarter closed out the scoring, allowing many of those 50,341 in attendance on a sunny Boulder afternoon the chance to head for the exits early.

The teams were almost even in total yards, 398-396, but three turnovers by the Blue Hens, together with two fourth down stops by the Buff defense in the red zone, allowed CU to hold Delaware to only seven points. Ryan Staub finished with seven completions in ten attempts, going for 157 yards and two touchdowns. CU’s leading rusher was Simeon Price, with 55 yards on nine carries. Sincere Brown became the first Buff receiver to top 100 yards on the season, with 120 yards on only four catches, including his 71-yard score.

No. 9 Colorado 27, No. 21 Utah 22

Colorado relied upon its defense to bring home the school’s first ten win season since 2001, downing No. 21 Utah, 27-22. With the victory, the “worst-to-first” dream season was completed, with the Buffs going from 1-8 in Pac-12 play in 2015 to 8-1 in 2016, claiming CU’s first Pac-12 South title, and first division title since winning the Big 12 North in 2005.

The Buffs were held to 378 yards of total offense, but the CU defense held the Utes to 339 yards of total offense, forcing four turnovers along the way. A forced fumble from Utah running back Joe Williams was returned by Buff linebacker Kenneth Olugbode ten yards for a game-clinching score early in the fourth quarter. Olugbode’s score made it 27-16, and the Buff defense made it hold up.

Special teams almost cost the Buffs the game, with Utah scoring on a punt return for a touchdown early in the game, and almost scoring on a kickoff return early in the fourth quarter.

“I’m very excited to grind one out,” said Colorado quarterback Sefo Liufau, who had 270 yards passing and a team-leading 59 yards rushing, but fumbled twice. “The defense got my back.”
