Georgia Tech 27, Colorado 20

Georgia Tech quarterback Haynes King faked a pitch and scampered for a 45-yard touchdown with 1:07 remaining as Georgia Tech overcame a turnover-filled start to beat Colorado, 27-20. King finished with 156 yards rushing and three touchdowns, also throwing for 143 yards. Georgia Tech finished with 463 yards of total offense, 320 on the ground. The CU offense opened the season with just 305 yards of total offense – 159 through the air; 143 on the ground.

Coach Prime was disappointed in watching CU’s defense give up 320 yards rushing. “We’ve got to be more explosive, more definitive, more decisive with what we’re doing with the ball on offense”, said Coach Prime, who saw his overall record at CU dip to 13-13. “They ran for 320 yards. You’re not gonna win with those statistics. Tried many things. We tried blitzing, trying to fill every gap, but we couldn’t get the job done. They were much more physical than we were.”

Liberty transfer quarterback Kaidon Salter, making his first start as a Buff, completed 17-of-28 passes for 159 yards, including an eight-yard touchdown pass to running back Dekalon Taylor in the first quarter. Salter also contributed 43 yards on 11-carries, including a seven-yard touchdown run. The Colorado rushing attack, which netted 146 yards on the night, was led by Micah Welch, who had 64 yards on 11 carries.

A sell-out crowd of 52,868 was on hand for the Friday night opener, with the Buffs falling to Georgia Tech in the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

No. 17 BYU 36, No. 20 CU 14

Colorado continued its 20-year drought without a bowl victory, and its continued misery in San Antonio, with a 36-14 loss to No. 17 BYU in the Alamo Bowl. The Colorado defense held the Cougars to 331 total yards, but the Buff offense was held to 210 yards of total offense – including two total yards rushing – as CU quarterback Shedeur Sanders was harassed all night.

The Cougars used a combination of offense (quarterback Jake Retzlaff completed 12-of-21 passes for 151 yards), defense (BYU sacked Sanders four times, with two interceptions) and special teams (including a 64-yard punt return for a touchdown by Parker Kingston), to dominate the Buffs. It was 10-0 after the first quarter, then 20-0 at halftime, with the Buffs gaining two consolation passing touchdowns (a 43-yarder to Travis Hunter; a two-yarder to tight end Sav’ell Smalls), to keep the final score from being even more lopsided.

Colorado 48, Central Florida 21

Colorado used big plays from both the offense and the defense to defeat Central Florida on the road, 48-21. Shedeur Sanders completed 28-of-35 passes for 290 yards and three touchdowns, while the defense forced four turnovers, including a 95-yard fumble return for a touchdown by safety Cam’Ron Silmon-Craig to seal the game with five minutes remaining.

The Buffs were out-gained on the steamy afternoon (85-degrees at kickoff, with 78-percent humidity) by the Knights, 461 yards to 418, but never trailed. Three different receivers scored, with Will Sheppard scoring on a 47-yard pass from Sanders to lead the team with 99 yards on only four receptions. Travis Hunter had his five-game streak of 100-yard receiving games broken, collecting nine passes for 89 yards and a touchdown. LaJohntay Wester, the hero of the Baylor comeback the week before, had three catches for 34 yards, including a 23-yard touchdown.

The CU running game, while not outstanding, was effective for the first time in memory. Three backs – Isaiah Augustave, Dallan Hayden, and Micah Welch – had a combined 20 carries for 98 yards and two touchdowns. Overall, with Shedeur Sanders being sacked only twice, the Buffs finished with a season-best 128 yards rushing.

Four turnovers were certainly the key to the CU defense holding UCF to 21 points, but the Buffs were effective the entire game. The Buffs surrendered their first points in the third quarter all season, but gave up only a third quarter touchdown, allowing the offense to put the game away in the second half.
