Colorado 37, Wyoming 20

Ralphie VII made her debut in style, leading the Buffs onto the field before the second-largest Folsom Field crowd in 17 years (53,422), with the Buffs going on to defeat Wyoming, 37-20.  Quarterback Kaidon Salter more than did his part, returning to the starting lineup after sitting out the loss to Houston the previous weekend. Salter passed for 304 yards and three touchdowns, completing scoring passes of 29 yards to Omarion Miller, 68 yards to Sincere Brown, and 47 yards to Joseph Williams while also running for 86 yards and a 35-yard touchdown run on 11 carries.

“Every chance that I got today, I tried to take advantage of the opportunity,” Salter explained. “And I know that I got big guys out there, big playmakers, and if I throw it up, it’s 75/25 their way.”

Overall, the Buffs had 497 yards of total offense, including 193 yards on the ground. Wyoming did not go quietly, keeping the game close throughout much of the evening, but the Cowboys were never closer than two scores after the Buffs took a 14-3 lead early in the second quarter.

“Kaidon Salter came back and played his butt off,” Coach Prime said of his starting quarterback. “He had a couple of downs, but the majority were ups, which overshadowed the downs, and he made some plays that a quarterback is going to  have to do off script. And he made it happen. The timing was impeccable, and he made some big throws, some big runs, especially the run at the end. That’s the guy we wanted to see, and we’re seeing him at his best. I’m glad you’re getting the chance to see him shine. He hasn’t reached that potential yet, but he’s getting more and more comfortable with everything.”

Coach Prime has spent decades in front of a microphone.

A celebrity since stepping on to national stage some 40 years ago at Florida State, Coach Prime has proven to be more than capable of holding his own with the press.

And yet, when the Buffs are not living up to expectations, Coach Prime has shown us his human side. He has become short at times with some members of the press, ignoring or excluding others who he perceives to be negative, and he can be a little prickly when things are going as well on the field as he – or the Buff Nation – expect.

The week before the Houston game, Coach Prime went on a rant about an ESPN report that Ryan Staub would start at quarterback: “Nobody gives a darn about being correct and being right”, he said. “Everybody just wants to be first. That doesn’t make any sense to me. I would love the integrity that we once had with media. I would love that.”

Of course, as it turned out, the report was not only first, but correct.
