Colorado 24, No. 22 Iowa 17

Kaidon Salter passed for 255 yards and two touchdowns, while the Buff defense posted a fourth interception and a fourth-down stop to make CU’s lead hold up in a 24-17 win over No. 22 Iowa State. In CU’s first win over a ranked team since the 2023 opener in Coach Prime’s debut, the Buff defense gave up 441 yards of total offense, including 236 yards rushing, but held Iowa State scoreless in the fourth quarter, enabling the Buffs to snap a two-game losing streak.

“I hate to say it’s one win that could turn it around,” Coach Prime said of CU’s 3-4 record. “We should have been winning, man, and we’re still upset with that. The locker room has a different vibe today, and it’s a different challenge given at the conclusion of the matter, but we’re better than what our record says.”

Joseph Williams led the Buffs with 128 yards receiving on eight catches, including a 38-yarder on third-and-16 in the final minutes to preserve the win. Omarion Miller contributed 82 yards on three catches, including a 70-yard touchdown reception in the first minute of the third quarter.

“It means a lot. We won,” Coach Prime said. “It’s a difference. Different feel, different move. Lately I want to go grab something to eat. Usually, I don’t want to be seen after a loss. I might actually go do it. You don’t want to go nowhere where you get your butt kicked. ‘Hey, did you just lose?’, like you don’t want that. You don’t want that. So imagine you go somewhere and eat right now, because we won, and I get to hear the other side of it. ‘Hey, good game Coach Prime.’”

I have developed a reputation over the years – no doubt well-deserved – of being stressed out on Game Day. For years, I have been an ideal tailgate guest … because I am rarely able to eat before a game. I can talk football, but I fidget, impatiently waiting for the game to start so I can get past the stress of waiting. The idea of eating anything, much less imbibing on adult beverages, is usually a non-starter.

Even on Fridays before the game, as I prepare to fly from Bozeman to Denver for games, I tend to be more quiet and reserved. My attitude is noticeable enough that my lovely wife Lee will often say, as I leave for for the airport, “Remember, it’s supposed to be fun”.

TCU 35, Colorado 21

Colorado blew a 14-0 first half lead for the second week in succession, falling on the road to TCU, 35-21. The Buffs committed four turnovers, including three interceptions by quarterback Kaidon Salter. The final score was not indicative of the game, with the Horned Frogs not surging past CU in total yards (369-343) until a salt-in-the-wound 21-yard touchdown pass from TCU quarterback Josh Hoover to wide receiver Eric McAllister with 19 seconds remaining.

Kaidon Salter finished 18-for-29 for 217 yards, with two passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown. Both passing touchdowns went to Omarion Miller, going for six yards in the first half and 31 yards in the second.

“It’s one thing to lose, then it’s another thing to feel like you beat yourselves,” Coach Prime said of the loss. “When you’re beating beaten – we were beaten in Houston, but these other games we had opportunity, ample opportunity, to win the games.

“It’s frustrating because I’m seeing what you see. I felt like, and this is no disrespect to TCU, because they’re well-coached, they did a wonderful job, the quarterback made plays; I feel like we’re the better team. I felt like that last week, the week before. But yet we’re still in this situation.”

The loss left the Buffs with a 2-4 overall record, 0-3 in Big 12 play, tied with West Virginia for the worst record in the Big 12.

Lather, Rinse, Forget

I had my Essay for the TCU game all done and ready to publish. The frustrating 35-21 game was still fresh in my head on Saturday night, but at least with a 5:30 p.m., kickoff, I didn’t have to stay up until the wee hours to get the game story posted and the Essay underway.

Entitled, “Robert Livingston, I Presume”, My Essay for the game opened like this:

Dr. David Livingstone (1813-1873) is a legend among explorers and adventurers. During his incredible life, Livingstone undertook three major expeditions into the Dark Heart of Africa, travelling a phenomenal 29,000 miles, a greater distance than the circumference of the earth. Among his discoveries in his decades of exploring were Victoria Falls and the source of the Congo River.

In 1871, when no one had heard from Livingstone in some time, he was presumed dead. Another explorer and journalist, Henry Stanley, though, found Livingstone very much alive. It was Stanley, who, upon finding Dr. Livingstone, allegedly uttered those famous words, ‘Dr. Livingstone, I presume?’.
