November 30th Report: Mike Leach to be hired at Washington State Mike Leach has reached agreement to become the new football coach at Washington State. Washington State athletic Director Bill Moos said Tuesday he wanted a guy who produces “”flashy offenses.” Leach is among the flashiest. Oregon’s Chip Kelly now has two guys — Leach and Rodriguez — who want to match the Ducks ludicrous speed approach. Colorado 17, Utah 14

Colorado used an almost perfect first half to take the lead, and then played just well enough in the second half to hold the lead, taking the first “Rumble in the Rockies” against Utah, 17-14.

Utah junior kicker Coleman Petersen, the Pac-12 Player-of-the-Week for his three-for-three performance in a 30-27 overtime victory over Washington State, had a chance to tie the game with a 48-yard kick, but the effort went wide and short, giving Colorado the hard-earned victory.

The road win, as every Buff fan could recite in his sleep, was the first for Colorado since 2007. The school-record streak of 23 road losses (24 counting the 2007 Independence Bowl) finally came to an end before a crowd of 45,026 in Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City.

One for the Road

Never in the course of Colorado football endeavors have so many been made so happy over so little.

At the end of the day, the University of Colorado football program still ended its 2011 season with one of the worst records in school history. For only the fourth time in 122 years of football, the Buffs finished a season with ten losses.

The win, over a 7-4 Utah team, was hardly epic. The Buffs struggled on offense at times, and gave the Utes any number of chances in the fourth quarter to pull out the come-from-behind victory.

Yet the Buffs still won, 17-14.

And make no mistake about it … this win was huge.
