In a battle of true freshmen quarterbacks, West Virginia’s Scotty Fox Jr. got the best of it, with the Mountaineers holding off Colorado for a 29-22 victory. Fox threw a touchdown pass, while converted running back Curtis Jones had two short touchdowns for West Virginia. Julian Lewis threw two touchdown passes in his first career start, finishing the game with 22-of-35 passing for 299 yards.

West Virginia running back Diore Hubbard’s 69-yard reception in stride down the left side line set up tight end Ryan Ward’s first touchdown catch, a 3-yarder from Fox for a 16-3 lead late in the second quarter. Both teams then moved quickly down the field for scores before halftime. Lewis hit Joseph Williams with an 8-yard touchdown strike, and Kade Hensley followed with a 41-yard field goal as time ran out to give West Virginia a 19-9 halftime lead.

But Fox threw interceptions on consecutive pass attempts in the third quarter to give Colorado a chance at a comeback. The Buffs got within a field goal twice in the second half, then within a touchdown with a late field goal, but never led in the game.

“This is not who we are,” Coach Prime said after the game. “We’re better than this. They [fans] deserve better than this. I want better than this. I feel like I coach better than this. I feel like we have players that are so much better than the production that we’re putting out. It starts with me. I feel like we have the nucleus inside the locker room, that we should be getting it done. I don’t think we’ve played a team that’s athletically and physically better than us. I really don’t.”

The signing of quarterback Julian “Ju Ju” Lewis last December was a huge coup for Coach Prime and the Colorado football program.

Not only did Lewis presumably fill a void left by the departure of a quarterback who set over 100 school records in just two seasons in Boulder, but the signing helped to quell fears in the Buff Nation that Coach Prime was leaving Boulder anytime soon.

Julian Lewis is the highest-rated high school quarterback ever to sign with the University of Colorado. A five-star recruit, Lewis was listed as the No. 10 overall Class of 2025 recruit in the nation by Rivals; the No. 12 overall recruit by ESPN.

On the 247 Sports list of all-time CU recruits, Lewis comes in at No. 6, behind the likes of Buff running backs Darrell Scott and Marcus Houston … as well as Jordan Seaton (No. 3), Coach Prime’s landmark recruit from the Recruiting Class of 2024.

Arizona 52, Colorado 17

Five turnovers and a porous defense contributed to another rout for Colorado, with Arizona mauling the Buffs in Boulder, 52-17. Arizona quarterback Noah Fifita threw four touchdowns, but Buff turnovers allowed the Wildcats to score on touchdown drives of 12, eight, and 17 yards. For the game, Colorado led in time of possession (34:09-25:51), and had as many first downs (16), but short fields and chunk plays doomed the Buffs to another embarrassing rout.

“Don’t attack the coordinators. Come at me. Don’t attack the players. Come at me,” Sanders said.

Sanders had no answers as to why the Buffs played so poorly again, insisting good practices had given no inkling another rout was forthcoming. He bristled when asked if his team had checked out: “I know a quitter when I see one. I haven’t seen that.”

Sanders added that he’s confident he can coach Colorado back into winning ways, saying, “I don’t doubt me. Let’s get that straight: I. Don’t. Doubt. Me.”

For the game, Arizona had a relatively modest 417 yards of total offense, but passes going for 60 and 57 yards, plus a run for 68, were all the Wildcats needed. The Buffs committed 14 penalties for 110 yards, with one penalty wiping out a 75-yard touchdown pass; another nullifying an interception.

With Kaidon Salter and Ryan Staub accounting for two turnovers apiece, freshman quarterback Julian Lewis came into the game in the third quarter. Lewis went 9-for-17 for 121 yards and a touchdown, not bad when considering Salter went 11-for-15 … for 49 yards, while Staub went 0-for-2 … with two interceptions.

Last weekend, after a humbling 53-7 loss to Utah, things looked pretty bleak for Coach Prime and his Buffs.

“He [Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham] kicked my butt today”, Coach Prime lamented after the game. “This was bad. It’s probably the worst beating I’ve ever had. 422 yards rushing. You ain’t winning. Total offense, 140 yards, you’re not winning. Special teams gave up a fake punt as well as a blocked punt; you’re not winning. So, all three phases, we got our butts kicked.”

Of course, those who love to watch CU lose were out in force, with their pitchforks freshly sharpened. The message boards were lit up with salty language. One headline: “Utah knocks out the Buffs, kicks sand in its face, and flips it the bird in humiliating 53-7 fashion” … and that was from a journalist.

Live by the media frenzy; die by the media frenzy.

Then, just when you thought things couldn’t get any worse for the Buff Nation, they have.
