Missouri – First shutout since 1992

In one of the latest Homecoming dates in school history, the Buffs played its final home game of 1995 against a struggling 2-7 Missouri squad which was winless in Big Eight play. A crowd of 50,645 endured some wind gusts of up to 60 mph, but generally enjoyed balmy November temperature readings of over 50 degrees, leaving Folsom Field satisfied with a methodical 21-0 win for the home team.

Quarterback John Hessler, who against Oklahoma State had broken the school record for touchdown passes in a season (the old mark being 12, jointly held by Steve Vogel, Darian Hagan, and Kordell Stewart), added touchdown passes #17 and #18 for the year, also chipped in a 36-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter. The much-maligned Buff defense chose to strut its stuff against an overmatched Tiger offense, posting its first shutout since a 28-0 win over Oklahoma State in 1992.

After an idle Saturday which saw the Buffs rise to a No. 9 national ranking in the polls, the Colorado Buffaloes prepared to do battle against Missouri on a Thursday night game. For the 1992 season, the Big Eight had agreed with ESPN to play a number of conference games on Thursday nights. The game promised national exposure as the only game to be played that day, and the contests provided extra dollars for the conference coffers.

The Colorado/Missouri game was a natural for television. The Buffs were returning to Columbia and Faurot Field for the first time since the infamous “Fifth Down” game of 1990. The media were all over the story, even going so far as to interview J.C. Louderback, the leader of the officiating crew which had allowed Colorado a fifth down in the waning seconds of the 1990 contest, permitting the Buffs to pull out a last second, 33-31 win. “I don’t think about it, not till it’s brought up”, said Louderback. “Or until the game comes up again.” At least Louderback, who had been scorned by Tiger fans, maintained his sense of humor. “I…

National and Big Eight Recap – 1992

The 1992 college football season was dominated by the Miami Hurricanes. That is to say, at least Miami dominated all the way up to its National Championship showdown against Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. There, the Crimson Tide throttled Miami, 34-13, to win Alabama’s sixth national title, the first for head coach Gene Stallings. Alabama finished the season 13-0, claiming the nation’s first undisputed title since 1989. Miami’s quarterback Gino Toretta, despite having a quarterback rating of no higher than 19th in the country, was nonetheless awarded the Heisman Trophy. The nation’s leading rusher was San Diego State sophomore Marshall Faulk, who posted 1,630 yards in only 10 games.

In the Big Eight, it was the return of the Big Red, as Nebraska claimed its first undisputed championship since 1988. The Cornhuskers finished the 1992 campaign 9-3, 6-1 in conference play. After falling to Florida State in the Orange Bowl, 27-14, Nebraska finished the season ranked #14. Colorado finished 9-2-1, 5-1-1 in the Big Eight.
