#14 Colorado v. #2 Nebraska – November 23, 2001

 Nebraska – Pre-game

Everyone who knows me knows that when it comes to CU football games, I am a “glass is half empty” fan.  I can usually find a dozen reasons to worry about any opponent the Buffs face.  If you had asked me the week of the San Jose State game whether I was concerned, I would have countered with details of a  team with a Heisman candidate in Deonce Whittaker and a 7-5 2000 record.  The best you can usually get out of me before a game in terms of a prediction is that I am “cautiously optimistic”.

For some reason, though, the Nebraska game was different.  Where the confidence came from, I can’t say, but I just knew the Buffs were going to win.  Before I left Bozeman for the game, I asked my wife, Lee, to tape the game.  In the late 80′s and early 90′s, when the Buffs were just re-entering the national stage, and seeing the Buffs on television was still something of a novelty, I taped a number of games.  Since the ‘94 season, though, I hadn’t taped a single game.  For some reason,…

#16 Texas – On Oxygen

//posted 10.1.1994

No rest for the weary.  CU was 3-0, up to #5 in the polls, and the talk of the nation.  But the Texas Longhorns, 3-0 and ranked 16th, wanted their own share of the nation’s attention.  The Buffs only had seven days to celebrate and recuperate from the “Miracle at Michigan”, and to prepare for the showdown in Austin.

October 1st – @ Texas                          #5 Colorado 34, #16 Texas 31

Texas was more than anxious to take a crack at the #5 Buffs.  Undefeated on the young season, the 16th-ranked Longhorns were 3-0 for the first time since 1985.  Playing at home in front of a sell-out crowd of 77,809, Texas players looked to avenge the 36-14 pasting laid on them by the Buffs in 1993 season-opener.  Eight returning starters on offense and nine on defense gave Longhorn fans plenty of confidence that the media-drunk Buffs would leave Austin in a different mood than they had Ann Arbor.

But it was Texas and their fans that left the stadium displeased, as for the second week in a row, Colorado scratched out a last-second win against a ranked opponent on the opponent’s home field.  Junior place-kicker Neil Voskeritchian booted through a…

September 25th – Boulder           #3 Miami 35, #13 Colorado 29

The Miami Hurricanes came into the 1993 game against Colorado in Boulder with a 2-0 record, having only surrendered nine points in their first two contests.

Miami’s record and dominating defense were not surprises. Over the previous ten seasons, the Hurricanes had posted four national championships, three near-misses, a 107-14 (89%) record, and a Top Ten ranking for 122 consecutive polls. Still, the Hurricanes, like the Buffs, were replacing a number of defensive starters. If Colorado was to have any hope for a national title, it had to start with an upset win at home against Miami.

It was not meant to be. The Buffs stormed back from a 28-6 deficit to pull within six points late in the game, 35-29, but could not score from inside the Hurricane 20-yard line with under one minute remaining.

The hotly-contested game, played before 52,391 Colorado faithful and a national ABC television audience, was all Miami in the first half. The Hurricanes rolled to a 21-6 halftime lead behind the running of Miami fullback Donnell Bennett and the passing of quarterback Frank Costa.

Still, despite what…

September 18th – @ Stanford           #20 Stanford 41, #7 Colorado 37

Led by senior quarterback Steve Stenstrom, the Stanford Cardinal rallied for 10 points in the last four minutes of the game to snatch a 41-37 win over a shocked Colorado Buffalo squad.

With eight seconds remaining, and Stanford facing a third-and-goal from the Buffs’ five yard line, the game came down to one play. Stenstrom, who would post 382 yards and five touchdowns passing on the evening, hit Tony Cline in the back of the endzone. As Cline came down with the ball, he was clocked by Colorado senior safety Dwayne Davis. The football came loose, but Cline was credited with a touchdown nonetheless.

After the game, outside linebacker Ron Woolfork was adamant: “(Cline) clearly didn’t have possession of it.” For his part, Davis was too pre-occupied with the hit to notice: “I just ran, gritted my teeth, closed my eyes and tried to make everything on his body come out.” Coloardo head coach Bill McCartney was diplomatic in defeat. “I couldn’t see it,” said McCartney of the game’s final play. “One official told me he questioned it, but that’s all I know.”

The fact was, however that the…

Colorado v. Syracuse – Fiesta Bowl – January 1, 1993

Lost Luggage, Lost Jacket, Lost Holiday

I had never been to Phoenix before.  In fact, unless you count stepping across the state line at the Four Corners area which represents the intersection of the borders of Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico, I had never been to Arizona before.  Coming at the end of December, a trip to the Fiesta Bowl to cap off the 1992 season seemed like a great idea.

My trip got off to a bad start when my luggage failed to meet me at the Phoenix airport.  Fortunately, my hosts for my first evening in Phoenix, Kyle and Kim, were more than hospitable in taking care of my needs until the next day when my wayward luggage decided to complete its journey.

(Author’s Note:  Allow me to digress.  Kyle and Kim were floormates of mine from my freshman year in Libby Hall.  In fact, Kyle was the first person I met in Boulder.  I was carrying up some boxes to my dorm room my first day in town when Kyle strolled down the hallway, stuck out his large hand, and, in a voice which was…

September 26th – Boulder          #10 Colorado 28, Iowa 12

Surviving the Minnesota game allowed Colorado to return to the top ten in the polls for the first time since finishing ranked No. 1 at the end of the 1990 season.  Colorado’s final non-conference opponent for the 1992 season was the Iowa Hawkeyes in Boulder.  The Hawkeyes had begun the year ranked 16th in the nation, but had fallen out of the polls after succumbing to North Carolina State and co-defending National Champion Miami before rebounding against Iowa State.  Iowa came to Boulder 1-2, off of a bye week and in search of the consistency that had resulted in a 10-1-1 record in 1991.

For the second week, it was the Buffs’ defense which carried the day.  Despite allowing the Hawkeyes to hold the ball for 36:57 of the contest, Colorado’s defense allowed only 229 yards of total offense.  Hawkeye quarterbacks were sacked by the Buffs nine times on the day, as Buff outside linebackers Chad Brown and Ron Woolfork teamed up for seven sacks and 73 total yards in losses.

Two early series set the tone for the game.

On the game’s first play from scrimmage, Iowa quarterback Jim Hartlieb hit Harold…

 September 30th – @ Washington          #5 Colorado 45, #21 Washington 28

The Colorado Buffaloes, inspired by the words of their fallen quarterback, raised their season record to 4-0 with a dominant performance against Washington, handing the Huskies a 45-28 thrashing.  In posting the highest point total by a Washington opponent at Husky Stadium in 15 years, Colorado ran over, through, and around Washington.  The Buffs had six players run for over 40 yards apiece in accumulating 420 yards on the ground.

For most of the first half, the game was competitive.  Washington struck first, connecting on a 21-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead midway through the first period.  Colorado immediately responded, as Eric Bieniemy scored on a 35-yard run to put the Buffs on top to stay.  With less than two minutes before halftime, Bieniemy and J.J. Flannigan each posted short touchdown runs to put Colorado up 21-6 at intermission.  The Flannigan score was set up by an interception by senior safety Bruce Young seconds after Bieniemy’s second score.  Set up at the Washington 47-yard line with 1:22 before half, Hagan immediately connected with Mike Pritchard for 40 yards.  Three plays later, J.J. Flannigan did the honors from three yards…
