Nebraska 45, Colorado 17

November 26th – at Nebraska           No. 16 Nebraska 45, Colorado 17

Colorado was riding the high of a two-game winning streak, needing one more win to qualify for a bowl game. Instead, the Buffs reverted to old bad habits, falling on the road to No. 16 Nebraska, 45-17. Three Colorado turnovers were all converted into touchdowns by the Cornhuskers, who held the ball for almost 40 minutes of game time. With the loss, Colorado ended its final season as a member of the Big 12 conference with a 5-7 record. Cody Hawkins, who had only two interceptions (and 12 touchdowns) in four games after taking over for an injured Tyler Hansen, threw two interceptions early in the third quarter, allowing Nebraska to turn a close game into a rout.

While it was impossible to know it at the time, the game may have turned on the fifth play from scrimmage. Nebraska took the opening kickoff, and, on second-and-eight at the Cornhusker 47 yard line, Nebraska quarterback Cody Green hit running back Rex Burkhead for a short gain. Burkhead fumbled the ball, with the fumble picked up Colorado cornerback Jimmy Smith and returned to the Nebraska 23 yard line. The 3,800 Buff…

A November to Remember

A November to Remember

November, 2010, will be remembered by Colorado fans as the month in which the Dan Hawkins’ era finally came to an end. It was also the month of an epic collapse and a month of redemption. Colorado’s final month as a member of the Big 12 Conference was anything but boring.

And, even though the Buffs suffered two disheartening losses, it says here that each game played a significant role – a positive role - in how the Buffs’ future as a member of the Pac-12 will take shape.

November 6th – Kansas 52, Colorado 45.

There is no other way to say it, the Kansas game was a collapse of historic proportions. On the first play of the fourth quarter in the game against the Jayhawks, Rodney Stewart scored on an eight yard run to give Colorado a 45-17 lead. It was unusual for the Buffs to post that many points – it was a season-high. It was not unusual, though, for the Jayhawks to be that far behind. In four previous Big 12 games, Kansas had given up an average of 46 points per game, and had scored only an average of ten points per game.…

Colorado team awards announced

At the annual team banquet, a number of awards were announced. Here are some of the highlights:

Most Valuable Player – senior offensive tackle Nate Solder. Solder is a finalist for the Outland trophy (to be announced December 9th). Solder also won the Dean Jacob Van Ek award for academic achievement, and is one of 16 players nationwide to be named a Scholar-Athlete by the National Football Foundation, earning an $18,000 post-graduate scholarship.

Most Outstanding Offensive Player (the John Mack award) – senior wide receiver Scotty McKnight. McKnight becomes the first-ever three time winner of the award. With 50 catches for 621 yards, McKnight this season became the first player in Colorado history to lead the team in receiving for four consecutive seasons.

Most Outstanding Defensive Player (the Dave Jones award) – senior cornerback Jimmy Smith. Smith recorded 71 tackles, second on the team. In 775 snaps from scrimmage, Smith allowed only six completions in man coverage.

The Bill McCartney Award – junior defensive back Arthur Jaffee. Given to the most outstanding special teams player. Jaffee led the team in special teams points, including 14 tackles and eight knockdown blocks.

The Next CU head coach …

The Dan Hawkins Countdown … or … Who will be the next Colorado head coach?

[NOTE: It is normally my policy not to engage in too much speculation here at CU at the Game.  For example, I will not post about a verbal commitment from a recruit until the commitment makes the main board at either Rivals or Scout. That being said, everything currently being written about the new head coach at Colorado is going to be speculation. Until an announcement comes from the University, it is all guesswork. I do know - and trust - some of those who post on the internet, and will try and weed out some of the more outrageous speculation. For now, though, the only thing I can report with 100% certainty about the Buffs' new head coach is this ... Your guess is as good as mine].

Potential candidates previously reviewed are listed below (in reverse order):

Former Colorado head coach Bill McCartney, former Buff and current NFL assistant Jon Embree; former Buff and current NFL assistant Eric Bieniemy, Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn; Alabama offensive coordinator Jim McElwain. Next are two former head coaches, Mike Bellotti (Oregon) and Mike Leach (Texas Tech). There are also…

Preview – Nebraska

Preview – Nebraska

The “Exit Bowl”, the final regular season Big 12 game for both Colorado and Nebraska, gained considerably more intrigue over this past weekend. By defeating Kansas State, 44-36, Colorado kept its post-season hopes alive. Meanwhile Nebraska, in falling 9-6 to Texas A&M, failed to clinch a spot in the Big 12 championship game. A Colorado victory would mean bowl-eligibility; a Nebraska victory would mean the Cornhuskers will play in their sixth Big 12 championship game.

Both teams have a great deal to play for on Friday … not that the rivalry between Colorado and Nebraska needs any additional buildup.

Will it be a decent game? Nebraska is 9-2, and has been ranked the entire season (currently ranked 16th). Colorado, meanwhile, has been out of the national limelight for the past five seasons. The Cornhuskers are 20-point favorites against a team which hasn’t won on the road since 2007.

On paper, then, Nebraska should dominate.

Rivalry games, however, are not played on paper, so …

Here are this week’s “T.I.P.S.” for the game:

Pick a number, any number … 3, 5, or 17?

What will be the number of the quarterback who takes the…

Colorado 44, Kansas State 36

//posted 11.20.2010

November 20th – Boulder          Colorado 44, Kansas State 36

Colorado came back from a 14-3 deficit to build a two score halftime lead, then fought off a series of Kansas State challenges to post a well-earned 44-36 victory over Kansas State. Junior running back Rodney Stewart ran for career-high 195 yards, caught two passes for 49 yards, and threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Toney Clemons in leading the Buffs to their second consecutive victory over a Big 12 opponent for the first time since 2007.

The stars seemed aligned for the Buffs to play well against the Wildcats: the weather was cool (37 degrees), but sunny; the Buffs were on a high from winning their first game in the post-Dan Hawkins era; and it was Senior Day, with the players and fans pumped after a pre-game ceremony honoring the out-going seniors.

So, naturally, the Buffs came out and fell flat.

Arthur Jaffee lost the opening kickoff in the sun, and was swarmed under at the Buffs’ 13-yard line after finally collecting the kick. Three offensive plays netted a minus-five yards for the Colorado offense, and Zach Grossnickle’s short (34 yard) punt was returned by Ty Zimmerman 41 yards to the…
