Texas A&M gives its notice … sort of

In a news release today, Texas A&M University “officially notified the Big 12 Conference that it is exploring options related to the institution’s athletic conference affiliation. Texas A&M also requested that the Big 12 outline the process to be followed should the university elect to withdraw from the conference.”

What does that mean?

In the letter to Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe, Texas A&M President R. Bowen Loftin indicated that if the university withdraws from the conference, Texas A&M would do so in a way that complies with the Big 12′s bylaws. Additionally, Texas A&M would be supportive of the Big 12′s efforts to seek a new member of the conference.

“As I have indicated previously, we are working very deliberately to act in the best long-term interests of both Texas A&M and the State of Texas. This truly is a 100-year decision,” said Loftin. “While we understand the desire of all parties to quickly reach a resolution, these are extremely complex issues that we are addressing methodically.”

Coincidentally, SMU athletic director Steve Orsini made public his belief Thursday that the Mustangs are ready to join an automatic-qualifier BCS…

“Numbers Don’t Lie“

Yuck.

There was very little which was special about the special teams play by the University of Colorado in 2010.

Colorado was ranked 88th in net punting last year, with Zach Grossnickle struggling to a 35.7 yards net average (Colorado’s opponents’ net average was 40.2). Senior kicker Aric Goodman connected on two-thirds of his attempts (10-for-15), but was only accurate half the time from beyond 30 yards (5-for-10).

In the return game, Colorado was adequate at best. There were several long kickoff returns, with a long of 89 yards by Arthur Jaffee against Iowa State, but the Buffs were unable to come up with a kick returner which they felt comfortable with, as four players posted between eight and 14 kickoff returns during the season. All four – Arthur Jaffee (14); Toney Clemons (10); Brian Lockridge (10); and Will Jefferson (8) – return in 2011, but there are no guarantees that any from that group…

Against Kansas, junior Rodney Stewart rushed for a career-high 175 yards, and freshman wide receiver Paul Richardson had his first 100-yard receiving game (11 catches for 141 yards and two touchdowns). The 2010 game between Colorado and Kansas, however, will only be remembered by Buff fans as the game in which Colorado lost a 28-point lead. Up 45-17 seven seconds into the fourth quarter on Stewart’s third touchdown of the game, the Buffs gave up 35 unanswered points to lose, 52-45. The worst “come-from-ahead” loss in school history sent the reeling Buffs to a 3-6 record overall, and their first 0-5 start in conference play since the 1979 Buffs started Big Eight play with an 0-5 record.

In a game between two teams which had found ways to beat themselves all season, it was the 2-5, 0-4 Kansas Jayhawks which spent the first three quarters finding ways to make the 3-5,0-4 Colorado Buffaloes look good.

The game opened about as well as any Buff fan could have hoped. For only the second time all season, Colorado scored on its opening possession. The Buffs drove 80 yards in 12 plays, converting two fourth…

September 18, 2010 – Boulder Colorado 31, Hawai’i 13

Alfred Williams couldn’t have done it any better himself.

Perhaps inspired by the halftime ceremonies honoring the Colorado All-American’s induction into the College Football Hall of Fame, the Buffs turned a 10-0 halftime deficit into a 31-13 rout of Hawai’i. Quarterback Tyler Hansen passed for 200 yards and two touchdowns,while Brian Lockridge and Rodney Stewart both rushed for over 100 yards as Colorado erased a poor first half showing with a dominant second half performance in the Buffs’ 2010 home opener.

Before many of the 47,840 in attendance had settled into their seats, the Hawai’i Warriors set about making sure Buff fans did not forget the 52-7 rout handed to the Buffs by Cal seven days earlier. On the second play of the game, Hawai’i quarterback Bryant Moniz hit Kealoha Pilares on a crossing route which turned into an 80 yard gain. Jimmy Smith caught Pilares at the Colorado three yard line, but a Warrior score, and another Colorado debacle, seemed imminent.

Then Hawai’i did Colorado a huge favor.

The Warriors ran the ball.

A week after rushing for only ten yards against Army, the Warriors decided to run the ball against the Buffs. Three…

Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott indicated this weekend that the chances of Colorado moving to the Pac-12 in 2011 are “worse than 50-50″. Scott did not rule out the chance that Colorado and the Big 12 will work out their differences in time for a move next season, but the Pac-10 may go with 11 teams next fall. “It sounds like some discussion (with the Big 12) is going on,” said Scott, “but they (CU athletic director Mike Bohn and CU chancellor Phil DiStefano) are pessimistic (about 2011), and are thinking 2012″.

The way the Buffs played against Cal from the Pac-10 in week two of the 2010 season, waiting another year might not be a bad idea …

Fact: Colorado hasn’t won a road game since 2007.

Reality: If the effort against California in Berkeley is any indication, the Buffs are not likely to win on the road anytime soon.

Colorado turned the ball over five times, including interception and fumble returns for touchdowns, as the Buffs wiped away all of the confidence gained from the opening win over Colorado State, falling 52-7 to California.

September 4th – Invesco Field, Denver Colorado 24, Colorado State 3

The Colorado Buffaloes took the first steps toward exorcising the demons of the 2009 season with a convincing 24-3 win over in-state rival Colorado State. Led by junior quarterback Tyler Hansen, a stout defensive effort, and a record-setting performance by wide receiver Scotty McKnight, the Buffs methodically took down the Rams before 60,989 on a 90-degree sun-baked day in Denver.

The Colorado defense set the tone early.

On the Rams’ second possession, third-year head coach Steve Fairchild opted to go for first down on fourth-and-one at the CSU 44-yard line. Running back T.J. Borcky, however, was stopped for no gain by sophomore linebacker Jon Major, and the Buffs took over possession. It took the Buffs six plays to score, with Tyler Hansen hitting senior transfer Travon Patterson on a 17-yard touchdown pass with 5:58 to play in the first quarter.

After teams exchanged punts, the Buffs took over at the 13:26 mark of the second quarter. Colorado then put together its most impressive drive of the game, going 82 yards in nine plays to score. The first five plays of the drive were all Rodney Stewart runs. Speedy slashed through the…

2010 Secondary – Returning Players / Recruits

After the humbling 54-38 loss to Toledo, the Colorado secondary, purported to be strength of the 2009 Colorado defense, was in shambles. Rocket quarterback Aaron Opelt looked like a Heisman contender, completing 60- and 70-yard passes on Toledo’s first two possessions. On the night, Opelt needed to complete only 15 passes to rack up 319 passing yards – over 20 yards per completion. Oh yeah, and there was that one “scramble” on the first play of the fourth quarter. With the Buffs down 37-24, but trying to mount a comeback, the not so fleet of foot Opelt outran the entire Colorado secondary for 61 yards and a game-clinching touchdown.

Toledo turned out to be the nadir of the 2009 season for the Buffs’ defensive backfield. Comparatively, the Colorado secondary improved over the course of the year. In the second half of the 2009 campaign, no team passed for more than 250 yards. When all was said and done, four Colorado defensive backs received some form of post-season honors - cornerbacks Cha’pelle Brown and Jimmy Smith were named second-team All-Big 12 by several services, with safety Benjamin Burney and cornerback Jimmy Smith earning honorable mention honors.
