No. 21 USC 42, Colorado 17

“Eventually, it will turn their way”, said Colorado head coach Jon Embree after Colorado lost its seventh game in a row, falling 42-17 to No. 21 USC.

Trojan quarterback Matt Barkley threw for a school recored six touchdowns as USC used a 21-point second quarter to pull away from the Buffs. Colorado running back Rodney Stewart, out for the previous three games, made a successful return, with 88 yards rushing and 67 yards receiving, but the Colorado offense overall continued to make crucial mistakes at critical times, preventing the Buffs from keeping the game competitive.

Unlike the previous two games, in which the Buffs fell behind Oregon and Arizona State 29-0 and 21-0 respectively, Colorado started the first Friday night home game in school history as if an upset was a real possibility. Dressed in all black uniforms (complete with black helmets) the Colorado Buffs played their best first quarter in a month. Colorado took the opening kickoff, and marched smartly down the field. September 10th – Boulder California 36, Colorado 33 OT

California quarterback Zach Maynard hit receiver Keenan Allen with a 5-yard touchdown pass in overtime Saturday at Folsom Field, giving the Bears a 36-33 victory over Colorado and keeping the Buffaloes winless in the Jon Embree Era.

Colorado got a record-setting passing performance from senior quarterback Tyler Hansen, who completed 28-of-49 passes for a school-record 474 yards and three touchdowns. Two of the scoring tosses went to sophomore Paul Richardson, who finished with 11 catches for 282 yards – also a single-game school record.

The new standards were not enough, however, as the Buffs squandered opportunities – four red-zone chances; zero touchdowns – and hurt their own chances – 12 penalties; 98 yards – leaving most of the sun-baked crowd of 49,532 disappointed along with their head coach.

The game started about as well as any Buff fan could have hoped. The Colorado defense forced a three-and-out from the California offense in the first possession of the game. On the Buffs’ first possession, the offense moved smartly down the field, but stalled at the Bear nine yard line. Rodney Stewart, who would have 73 yards rushing on the day, was stopped…

Injury Update

Fall camp was fairly kind to the University of Colorado football team, at least in terms of injuries. The Buffs emerged from fall practices with only a few players lost. Only freshman defensive back Jered Bell (torn ACL in first week of fall practice) has been lost for the season.

Other injured players:

Shawn Daniels, senior offensive lineman – out 4-6 weeks with severe strain to a calf muscle

Vince Ewing, sophomore defensive back – out for Hawai’i game – still suffering from swelling as a result of a torn ACL in 2010

Sherrard Harrington, freshman defensive back – out 6-8 weeks with hip contusion – a likely candidate to red-shirt this fall

In addition, freshman offensive tackle Alex Lewis (flu) and sophomore linebacker Liloa Nobriga (hamstring) did not make the trip to Hawai’i.

So, even though the Buffs are without three defensive backs entering the season, the injury list still has to be considered a positive for the team overall.

Even though Division 1-A teams are limited to 85 scholarship players, most teams carry over 100 on their roster. As a result, duplicates on jersey numbers is not…

October 15th – @ Iowa State Iowa State 22, Colorado 10

Playing in a gusty wind, the Iowa State Cyclones blew away the bumbling Buffs, 22-10. The Iowa State homecoming crowd was sent home happy, as for the third straight game the Colorado offense had great difficulty in finding the opposition’s goal. Lee Rouson was switched from fullback to halfback for the game to add a spark. Rouson responded with 93 yards, but it took 29 carries to produce those yards. Steve Vogel was so ineffective at quarterback that Derek Marshall subbed in after Vogel went 3-for-16 passing in the second half.

Unlike the Notre Dame and Missouri games, the Buffs were in the game against the Cyclones throughout. The score was 13-10 late in the first half, with a 26-yard Tom Field field goal, and a 14-yard touchdown pass from Steve Vogel to Loy Alexander keeping the Buffs close. Cyclone quarterback David Archer, though, hit David Gantt for a 14-yard score and a 19-10 halftime lead for Iowa State (the PAT attempt was blocked).

After a scoreless third quarter, Colorado had a first-and-goal at the Iowa State nine yard line on the first series of the fourth quarter. The snap on a 25-yard field…

Taking the LSAT

The University of Colorado had never played the University of Notre Dame in football.

This simple statement, in and of itself, was enough to raise anticipation level for the matchup between the Buffs and the Irish.

Then there was this: heading into the October 1, 1983, Colorado/Notre Dame game in Boulder, Colorado was 2-1; Notre Dame 1-2. Now, throughout campus, there was excitement not only about the possibility of playing Notre Dame, but about the possibility of actually beating the Irish.

It would be safe to assume that I, as a fan of college football, and especially a fan of the (apparently) resurgent Colorado Buffaloes, would have done little else the week leading up to the game other than prepare for the historic encounter. Unfortunately, I had a large distraction keeping from focusing on the game – the Law School Admission Test.

The LSAT is a test taken in preparation for applying to the law school of your choice. Like the SAT, ACT, GRE, and MCAT, the LSAT brings with it a great deal of self-inflicted pressure. I had grown up wanting to be an attorney, and my double major of history and political science was not going to open many…

1983 Preseason

While it was certainly true that Colorado, with a 2-8-1 record in 1982, was mired in a four-season long slump without a winning season, there was reason for optimism in Boulder. There had been moments in 1982 – a 12-0 shutout of Washington State in the second game of the season (and on the road!); a record-setting passing day of 361 yards against Nebraska (and trailing only 20-14 at the start of the fourth quarter!); a comeback tie against Oklahoma State; and a 28-3 demolition of Kansas in the home finale – which gave fans hope. Plus, head coach Bill McCartney had brought in his first recruiting class, and had his first full off-season on campus.

McCartney, who had been hired in June, 1982, had the off-season to revamp his coaching staff, with only one coach from 1982 retaining similar responsibilities in 1983. The Buffs’ head coach also had his first spring practices in Boulder. McCartney, before the start of the 1983 campaign, called his first spring drills “the single best thing that has happened” since he arrived. “The best thing about the spring was the moral and attitude of the players,” said McCartney. “That enabled us to…

Oklahoma State – It Must have been the Tie

October 16 – @Oklahoma State Colorado 25, Oklahoma State 25

It is hard to imagine that anyone would have a revenge factor in playing the Buffs in the early 1980′s, but that is what the Cowboys were playing for in 1982. Colorado had come from behind for an improbable, last second 11-10 win in 1981 in Boulder. Now it was Oklahoma State’s turn to right the wrong. Everyone else was getting healthy playing the powder blue Buffs, and the homecoming crowd of 47,250 expected nothing less from their squad.

Fans of both teams were to be treated to another last second game, but it was the Cowboy fans who were again left with a bad taste in their mouths.

Colorado seemed to have matters well in hand with only 4:39 left in the game, when Colorado’s sensational cornerback Victor Scott had just scored his second touchdown of the game, returning a pass interception for a 22-10 Colorado lead. Oklahoma State, though, promptly marched down the field, scoring a touchdown with still over two minutes left to play. 22-17.

Wyoming – Second loss ever to the Cowboys

September 25th – Boulder Wyoming 24, Colorado 10

While Colorado and its neighbor 100 miles to the north hadn’t played since 1975, there seemed little reason for the Buff faithful to be concerned about continuing the domination Colorado had over the Wyoming Cowboys from the Western Athletic Conference. After all, a Colorado football team hadn’t lost to Wyoming since 1935, with an overall record of 21-1-1 against the Cowboys.

But this was 1982, and there were no certain wins.

Colorado had its chances, as Wyoming turned the ball over on fumbles each of its first three possessions. The Buffs could not take advantage, however, posting only one Tom Field goal. In fact, the Buffs’ offense came within 56 seconds of completing its second consecutive game without a touchdown, only obtaining a consolation score in the last minute of the Wyoming game to make the final score a more respectable 24-10. Steve Vogel was ineffective – at best – completing only 11-of-34 passes with three interceptions (one of which was returned for a touchdown in the second quarter). The defense, again, had played well enough to register a win, but it was tough to win a game when the offense was surrendering…
