November 14th – @ Kansas #13 Colorado 25, #20 Kansas 18
The Kansas Jayhawks returned home to Lawrence to face the Buffs after being humbled by Nebraska, 49-7. It was the Jayhawks’ first conference loss after averaging 33 points per game in accumulating four Big Eight wins. With the Buffs’ falling to the Cornhuskers by an equally lopsided score the week before, the Buffs were not in a position to take the Jayhawks lightly.
An estimated crowd of 43,000, the largest crowd to witness a Colorado/Kansas game in Lawrence since 1968, watched the Buffs come out and dominate play in the first half. Senior defensive tackle Marcellous Elder tipped a pass from Kansas quarterback Chip Hilleary late in the first quarter, with the ball landing in the arms of Elder’s linemate Leonard Renfro. Renfro took the ball in from 18 yards out for a 7-0 Colorado lead.
A few moments later, after the Buffs’ defense had snuffed out another Jayhawk drive and Kordell Stewart had connected with Charles E. Johnson on a 54-yard fly pattern to the one yard line, junior tailback James Hill busted over a yard out for a 14-0 Colorado lead.
The Buffs lead at the half was ten points, 17-7,…

1992 -”Air” Bill
National and Big Eight Recap – 1992
The 1992 college football season was dominated by the Miami Hurricanes. That is to say, at least Miami dominated all the way up to its National Championship showdown against Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. There, the Crimson Tide throttled Miami, 34-13, to win Alabama’s sixth national title, the first for head coach Gene Stallings. Alabama finished the season 13-0, claiming the nation’s first undisputed title since 1989. Miami’s quarterback Gino Toretta, despite having a quarterback rating of no higher than 19th in the country, was nonetheless awarded the Heisman Trophy. The nation’s leading rusher was San Diego State sophomore Marshall Faulk, who posted 1,630 yards in only 10 games.
In the Big Eight, it was the return of the Big Red, as Nebraska claimed its first undisputed championship since 1988. The Cornhuskers finished the 1992 campaign 9-3, 6-1 in conference play. After falling to Florida State in the Orange Bowl, 27-14, Nebraska finished the season ranked #14. Colorado finished 9-2-1, 5-1-1 in the Big Eight. The Buffs, however, also fell in the postseason, succumbing to Syracuse in the Fiesta Bowl, 26-22, to finish ranked at #13. The only conference team…

Buffs and the Cowboys
The Colorado/Wyoming game would be the 25th meeting between the two neighbors, but the first in the series since 1982. Colorado held a commanding 22-2-1 edge in the rivalry, but one of the two losses was the 24-10 setback in 1982, Bill McCartney’s first year as head coach at Colorado. The Cowboys in 1990 had opened the season with a run of nine consecutive wins (and a #19 national ranking) before succumbing to four consecutive losses to end the year, including a 17-15 setback to California in the Copper Bowl.
Wyoming was already 0-1 for 1991 before coming to Boulder, opening with a 32-17 loss to Hawaii. The poll before the game moved Colorado up a notch from the preseason poll, from #13 to #12 nationally, thanks to none other than Georgia Tech, which fell out of the top ten in losing, 34-22, to Penn State in the Kickoff Classic (the Yellow Jackets would not return to the top ten for the remainder of 1991).
September 7th – Boulder #12 Colorado 30, Wyoming 13
The Colorado Buffaloes opened the defense of their national championship at home with a satisfying 30-13 win over Wyoming. Darian Hagan, showing no ill effects…

January 1st – @ Miami – Orange Bowl #1 Colorado 10, #5 Notre Dame 9
In a game largely devoid of offensive highlights, the Colorado Buffaloes overcame the loss of two key starters to defeat Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl, 10-9. The hard-fought win enabled Colorado to stake a claim to the Buffs’ first-ever national football championship. An Eric Bieniemy one-yard touchdown run tied the score midway through the third quarter, with Jim Harper’s extra point providing the margin of victory.
Neither the Buffs nor the Irish could dominate their opponent. In the end, the game would come down to the final minute – and one last controversy for Colorado.
First Half
In practice the week before the Orange Bowl, All-Big Eight wide receiver Mike Pritchard broke a bone in his left hand. Pritchard would play, but the air cast he was forced to wear eliminated him from kick returning duties. So for the opening kickoff of the 1991 Orange Bowl, cornerback Dave McCloughan took the field to return the Notre Dame kick. McCloughan was far from a drop-off in terms of kick-returning. In 1990, McCloughan was responsible for 80% of Colorado’s punt returns, leading the Buffs to…

September 16th – Boulder #8 Colorado 38, #10 Illinois 7
The University of Colorado served notice to the football world that the 1989 Buffs were for real, dominating No. 10 Illinois, 38-7.
For the third straight game, the Buffs scored on their first possession. A 74-yard pass from Darian Hagan to wideout Jeff Campbell set up a one-yard scoring run by Eric Bieniemy to give Colorado the early lead, 7-0. After the Illini tied the score on a two-yard run by Howard Griffith, Colorado took the lead for good as Bieniemy took a pitchout from Hagan, then lofted a halfback pass to a wide-open M.J. Nelson for a 48-yard touchdown and a 14-7 lead. Later in the first quarter, halfback J.J. Flannigan celebrated his 21st birthday with a 45-yard run to put the Buffs up 21-7. Colorado never looked back after that, posting its first win over a top ten team since the 1986 upset of Nebraska.
The Colorado defense completely negated quarterback Jeff George and the Illinois’ offense. After the Illini tied the score at 7-7 on an 80-yard drive, the Buffs did not allow Illinois to cross midfield again until midway through the fourth quarter. George was sacked…
