October 29, 2011 – at Arizona State No. 23 Arizona State 48, Colorado 14

The University of Colorado continued to compile all-time (negative) records in losing its first-ever game against a Pac-12 South rival, falling 48-14 to No. 23 Arizona State. In falling behind 21-0 in the first quarter, the result of the game was never in doubt. The Buffs surrendered over 30 points for the sixth straight game, which last happened in 1983. Colorado also gave up over 500 yards of total offense (522) for the fourth consecutive game, something which had never happened before.

Then, of course, there was the road losing streak, extended to 22 games (the previous record for consecutive road losses, in the 121-year history of the program, was ten).

The Colorado offense did show some signs of life against Arizona State, posting 420 yards, the second-highest total of the season (582 v. Cal). A season-high five turnovers, however, prevented the Buffs from ever mounting a serious challenge.

October 22nd – Boulder No. 9 Oregon 45, Colorado 2

The No. 9 Oregon Ducks made quick and light work of the under-manned and out-talented Colorado Buffaloes, sprinting to a 29-0 first quarter lead before settling for a 45-2 victory.

In handing the Buffs their worst home loss in four years, Oregon raced out to 293 total yards of offense in the first quarter, the second-highest total ever posted in one quarter against a Colorado team. On the day, Oregon posted 527 yards of total offense, more than double the 231 yard output of the Colorado offense.

The Buffs’ offense played most of the game without its best wide receiver (Paul Richardson, out for a second week), its best running back (Rodney Stewart, injured the week before against Washington) and its starting quarterback (Tyler Hansen, knocked out in the second quarter). Oregon was also without two of its stars, quarterback Darron Thomas and running back LaMichael James, but, unlike the Buffs, the Ducks had more than adequate backups.

Before the game even started, Oregon was assessed a fifteen yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. Colorado kicker Justin Castor, able to kick from the Colorado 45 yard line, booted the bal through the endzone.

October 15th – at Washington Washington 52, Colorado 24

The Washington Huskies, in their first game against Colorado since 2000, ran over, through and around the Buffs, dominating from start to finish in a 52-24 rout. Washington quarterback Keith Price had 230 yards and four yards touchdowns passing … at halftime, as the Huskies scored on all six first half possessions and never looked back.

After the first two drives of the game, it appeared that it would be an offensive shootout in Seattle. Washington made quick work of the Colorado defense to open the game, going 65 yards in six plays on its first drive, facing no third downs (and only two second downs) in marching down the field. Sophomore quarterback Keith Price hit a wide open Jermaine Kearse for a 17-yard touchdown before three minutes were gone in the game.

The Colorado offense, though, to the surprise of the 62,147 in attendance on a cool day in Seattle, responded with a touchdown drive of their own. The Buffs went 70 yards in seven plays, highlighted by a 33-yard run by Rodney Stewart and a 19-yard pass from Tyler Hansen to Keenan Canty on a third-and-ten at the Washington 26-yard line. October 8th – @ Stanford No. 7 Stanford 48, Colorado 7

Leading Heisman trophy candidate Andrew Luck passed for a season-high 370 yards and three touchdowns as the No. 7 Stanford Cardinal ran around, through, over and past the out-manned Colorado Buffaloes, 48-7.

On the day, Stanford rolled to 553 yards of total offense, while Stanford’s top ten defense held the Buffs to 264 yards. Playing without five suspended players on defense and without the Buffs’ only play-maker on offense, the outcome of the game wasn’t much in doubt after only a few minutes of play, as the Cardinal methodically pulled away from the inept Buffs.

As fate would have it, the game turned in Stanford’s favor before Andrew Luck ever had the chance to take the field.

Colorado freshman kicker Will Oliver began the game with a “sky kick”, which traveled only as far as the Stanford 33-yard line. There, the ball was fumbled, and was recovered by Colorado linebacker Jon Major. The Buffs were in business at the Stanford 36-yard line as the sell-out crowd of 50,360 shifted restlessly in their seats.

Nick Hirschman ready to take the field if called upon

While the future of the Colorado quarterback corps brightened considerably this week with the signing of former Texas quarterback Connor Wood, the present depth chart is a bit unnerving.

Behind senior quarterback Tyler Hansen there are no quarterbacks who have taken a snap in a Division 1-A football game. Red-shirt freshman Nick Hirschman, who missed over a week of fall practice with a foot injury, is the primary backup.

Reason for concern?

Not according to Hirschman.

“I didn’t feel like I was far behind at all”, Hirschman told BuffaloSportsNews.net. “I was able to get in the playbook while I was hurt, and I didn’t fall behind. I got on the tape. The only thing I couldn’t do was move. So I wasn’t far behind at all. I attended all the meetings. The first couple days when I wasn’t out at practice they said there was no point to be out there just standing around. So I was in the training room.”

Mid-term papers turned in – It’s time for the grades

Expectations for the Colorado Buffaloes for the 2011 season are, well, mixed. There are great hopes for the future of the program under the new head coach, Jon Embree, but a daunting schedule and a perceived dearth of talent on the roster mute the chances for an immediate breakout.

With that in mind, the below grades for each unit on the team is not with respect to similar athletes on the rosters of Colorado’s Pac-12 rivals, but rather with respect to what we knew about those units heading into the spring, and how well those players and their coaches did in improving their standing.

Quarterbacks – Spring Grade: B/B+

“I’m happy with where we are … we just need to keep working and improving”

The Colorado Buffaloes completed Spring practice, 2011, with a 105-play scrimmage before 15,655 at Folsom Field in the first-ever Spring game with an evening kickoff (6:00 p.m).

Senior quarterback Tyler Hansen completed 8-of-15 passes for 124 yards and a touchdown in his seven drives of the scrimmage. While not as efficient as Hansen’s 18-for-19 performance in the second spring scrimmage a week earlier, the odds are still on Hansen being named the starting quarterback for the season on Tuesday. “I feel really comfortable as a player, and this offense is really good,” said Hansen. “(Accuracy) was my goal, and I’ve been working on my mechanics with coach (Rip) Scherer. I feel I’m getting a lot more accurate.”

“I wouldn’t say from Day One (that he was impressed with Hansen), but I am happy with his productivity,” said head coach Jon Embree. “He’s done a good job with his command of the offense, getting them in and out of the huddle. We need to get better with our tempo … But, overall, I am pleased with how he’s competed.”

Former Colorado coach near the top of the ”hot seat” candidates this fall

Colorado fans can be pleased to be off of at least one chart for a change – the “coaches in the ‘hot seat’ chart”. With the Dan Hawkins’ era finally a part of CU lore, new head coach Jon Embree will enjoy a honeymoon period of at least two, and perhaps three, seasons.

Meanwhile, former Colorado head coach Rick Neuheisel is atop many of those lists this spring. In three seasons at his alma mater, Neuheisel’s UCLA Bruins have posted records of 4-8, 7-6, and 4-8. The 2010 team lost six of its final seven games, with back-to-back wins over No. 23 Houston and No. 7 Texas in non-conference play a distant memory.

Neuheisel knows that this is his year to produce. “I don’t feel it. I’m sure it’s there,” said Neuheisel of the extra pressure to win this season. “I don’t go up there and sit in (the athletic director’s) office every day, but I don’t feel it.”
