October 29, 2011 – at Arizona State No. 23 Arizona State 48, Colorado 14
The University of Colorado continued to compile all-time (negative) records in losing its first-ever game against a Pac-12 South rival, falling 48-14 to No. 23 Arizona State. In falling behind 21-0 in the first quarter, the result of the game was never in doubt. The Buffs surrendered over 30 points for the sixth straight game, which last happened in 1983. Colorado also gave up over 500 yards of total offense (522) for the fourth consecutive game, something which had never happened before.
Then, of course, there was the road losing streak, extended to 22 games (the previous record for consecutive road losses, in the 121-year history of the program, was ten).
The Colorado offense did show some signs of life against Arizona State, posting 420 yards, the second-highest total of the season (582 v. Cal). A season-high five turnovers, however, prevented the Buffs from ever mounting a serious challenge.
The Sun Devil Stadium crowd of 53,168 hardly had time to apply sunblock before the game was out of hand. With a game-time temperature of 85 degrees, the Sun Devils came out hot. Arizona State became the…

September 10th – Boulder California 36, Colorado 33 OT
California quarterback Zach Maynard hit receiver Keenan Allen with a 5-yard touchdown pass in overtime Saturday at Folsom Field, giving the Bears a 36-33 victory over Colorado and keeping the Buffaloes winless in the Jon Embree Era.
Colorado got a record-setting passing performance from senior quarterback Tyler Hansen, who completed 28-of-49 passes for a school-record 474 yards and three touchdowns. Two of the scoring tosses went to sophomore Paul Richardson, who finished with 11 catches for 282 yards – also a single-game school record.
The new standards were not enough, however, as the Buffs squandered opportunities – four red-zone chances; zero touchdowns – and hurt their own chances – 12 penalties; 98 yards – leaving most of the sun-baked crowd of 49,532 disappointed along with their head coach.
The game started about as well as any Buff fan could have hoped. The Colorado defense forced a three-and-out from the California offense in the first possession of the game. On the Buffs’ first possession, the offense moved smartly down the field, but stalled at the Bear nine yard line. Rodney Stewart, who would have 73 yards rushing on the day, was stopped…

September 6th – Boulder Colorado State 23, Colorado 17
Colorado State quarterback Grant Stucker passed for 208 yards, while running back John Mosure had two scores in leading the Rams to a 23-17 victory over Colorado in Boulder. The win was the first in Folsom Field for Colorado State since 1986, sending most of the near-sellout crowd of 53,168 home in dismay.
The Colorado Buffaloes’ 2009 season started about as badly as a season can.
The Rams took the opening kickoff smartly down the field, taking only six plays to cover 80 yards, with Mosure scoring from a yard out to give Colorado State a 7-0 lead just 3:13 into the game. The Buffs’ response? Three-and-out, gaining six yards.
Two series later, the score was up to 14-0, as the Rams took advantage of an interception and a personal foul penalty to start their drive at mid-field. The drive took ten plays, but the result was the same – touchdown, Colorado State, with Stucker and Mosure connecting from 14 yards out.
While the Colorado State offense was moving smoothly, the Colorado offense was anemic. The Buffs generated all of five first downs in the first half, gaining less than 100…

[The 1999 Buffs finished the regular season with a 6-5 record. Under first year head coach Gary Barnett, CU had a year with highs and lows. The Buffs started the season with a #14 ranking. A humbling loss in the opener, 41-14, to CSU, however, dropped Colorado from the rankings for the remainder of the season. Encouraging wins over Missouri (46-39 in CU’s first-ever overtime game) and #24 Oklahoma (38-24) were offset by disappointing losses to Washington (31-24 against former head coach Rick Neuheisel) and #6 Kansas State (20-14). The final regular season game was a microcosm of the season: the Buffs fell behind #3 Nebraska, 27-3, through three quarters of play. Three fourth quarter touchdowns by CU sent the game into overtime, where the Buffs ultimately fell, 33-30.]
A Good Loss
While the Buffs and their fans were still mourning the lost opportunity of the final moments of the Nebraska game, some good did come from the loss. Nebraska had come into the CU game ranked third in the Bowl Championship Series standings, behind undefeated Florida State and Virginia Tech. The Cornhuskers needed a convincing win over the Buffs, along with a win over Texas in the Big XII…

Preseason – 1999
For Colorado to be successful in 1999, a number of players would have to rise above their 1998 performances. Mike Moschetti would return at quarterback, and was primed to have a banner year. Much of Moschetti’s success, though, would hinge upon the health of the offensive line. Five starters returned, and senior guard Ryan Johanningmeier was tabbed as a Playboy preseason All-American.
Head coach Gary Barnett wanted the Buffs to return to a run-oriented offense in 1999. “Philosophically, we want to be a balanced offense,” said Barnett. “In looking at last year’s statistics, it’s obvious we need to improve the running game.” Barnett had hoped a single back would rise to the occasion during spring drills or fall camp, but none did. None of the three candidates – senior Dwayne Cherrington, junior Damion Barton, sophomore Cortlen Johnson – separated themselves. If the Buffs were to improve on the 1998 average of 123.2 rushing yards/game, it would have to be done by committee.
The defense also had questions. Returning to a 3-4 defensive alignment, there was call for more depth at linebacker. Unfortunately, there was little experience behind the starters. The secondary, though, led by All-American candidate Ben…

Duck Soup
A game against the 6-5 Washington Huskies seemed the most likely scenario for the Buffs as championship games were being contested in other conferences . Along with the title games, though, was a make-up game between Miami and UCLA. The game, originally scheduled for September 26th, had been re-scheduled to December 5th due to fears that a hurricane would hit the Miami area the last weekend in September. For UCLA, playing the game in December proved disastrous, as the 3rd-ranked Bruins fell to the Hurricanes, 49-45. The loss eliminated UCLA from consideration for the National Championship game (once beaten Florida State being chosen to face undefeated and top-ranked Tennessee), with the Rose Bowl being the Bruins’ consolation prize.
UCLA being selected to host the Rose Bowl set off a chain reaction, as Arizona, which had hoped to head to Pasadena for the first time in school history, was now relegated to the Holiday Bowl and a match-up with Nebraska. Oregon, in turn, which had anticipated a trip to San Diego to face the Cornhuskers, was now in line for a Christmas Day bowl game, the Aloha Bowl, with Colorado.
Oregon’s loss was Colorado’s gain, as the Buffs were…

November 27th – @ Nebraska #14 Nebraska 16, Colorado 14
“General” Robert Neyland, longtime head coach at the University of Tennessee, is a legendary name in the annals of college football. In leading the Volunteers to over 160 wins in 20 seasons, the College Football Hall of Fame coach was used to winning. “Almost all games,” Neyland pointed out, “are lost by the losers, not won by the winners.”
Such was the case in Memorial Stadium on Thanksgiving weekend, 1998.
The Buffs, despite facing a Nebraska team equally riddled with injuries and self-doubt, came out playing like an intimidated team. Early mistakes proved to be the difference in a frustrating 16-14 defeat, giving Nebraska a seven game winning streak over the Buffs.
Just as was the case in 1995, when the Buffs allowed Ahman Green to score on a 57-yard run less than two minutes into the game, (on the way to a 44-21 loss) and in 1992, when an interception led to a three-yard scoring run by Derek Brown with only 1:14 off of the first quarter clock (en route to a 52-7 rout), Colorado played early like a team destined to lose.
After a touchback on the opening…

September 5th – @ Denver Colorado 42, #15 Colorado State 14
Ralphie IV, only 16 months old and a mere 500 pounds, made her debut as the Buffs’ mascot before a crowd of 76,036 in a sold-out Mile High Stadium and a national television audience. The young buffalo looked small and unsure as she made her initial run, but came through nonetheless. The same could be said for the young Colorado Buffaloes. Only 40 of the 102 players on the Buffs’ roster had ever seen action in a college game before that warm Saturday evening. In all, 12 Colorado players made their first career starts.
Youth was served.
The Buffs dominated, roughing up the beleaguered Rams from Colorado State, 42-14. New quarterback Mike Moschetti was all that the Buffs could have hoped for, completing 21-of-32 passes for 257 yards and three touchdowns. Even more importantly, Moschetti committed no turnovers, and provided the leadership the Buffs had been longing for. After falling behind 14-13 early in the third quarter, Moschetti led the Buffs on a beautifully crafted 79-yard drive in only eight plays to put the Buffs back on top, 20-14. Less than two minutes later, redshirt freshman Cedric Cormier ran…
