Colorado regained its winning form, but again it was the defense which carried the day as Colorado ran its record to 6-3 with a 14-3 win over Kansas. The mood on the rainy, 40-degree was somber for the 25,000 on hand for Homecoming in Lawrence, and the frigid crowd was silent after the game was only three plays old. On third down in the game’s opening series, safety Mickey Pruitt, the hero of the Oregon game, stepped in front of a Mike Norseth pass and returned it 27 yards for a touchdown. It would be all the points the Buffs would need, as the Jayhawks could muster only 62 yards rushing on 32 attempts. The defense was led by senior linebacker Dan McMillen, who recorded a school record five sacks on the day.

The Colorado offense struggled for the third consecutive week. Mark Hatcher completed only one-of-six passes, and the Buffs were actually outgained by Kansas, 318 total yards to just 221 for the Buffs. September 14th – Boulder Colorado 21, Oregon 17

Colorado ran its season record to 2-0 for the first time since 1978 with an exciting 21-17 win over the Oregon Ducks in Boulder. The Buffs offense made it look easy in the first quarter, racing to a 14-0 lead. Sophomore fullback Anthony Weatherspoon scored on a ten-yard run, followed shortly thereafter by a three yard touchdown run by quarterback Mark Hatcher.

After the quick start, though, Oregon dominated through the middle quarters, forging a 17-14 advantage early in the fourth quarter.

Then the game really got interesting.

Quarterback Mark Hatcher scored on a 22-yard run early in the fourth quarter to put the Buffs back on top, 21-17. After that, the defense was asked to take over. Specifically, the game, and the fragile confidence of Colorado’s young team, came down to the play of two sophomore defensive backs, David Tate and Mickey Pruitt.

National and Big Eight recap – 1983

The Miami Hurricanes finished on top of the polls for the first time in school history, defeating the Nebraska Cornhuskers 31-30 in the Orange Bowl. Miami head coach Howard Schnellenberger completed the resurrection of the once dormant program, bouncing back from a 28-3 setback to Florida in the season opener to run the table and finish 11-1. Freshman quarterback Bernie Kosar teamed with fellow frosh Alonzo Highsmith to account for three touchdowns in the national championship game, as Kosar passed for 300 yards. Schnellenberger shared coach of the year honors with Ken Hatfield of Air Force. Hatfield, despite having the inherent obstacles associated with recruiting for a service academy, led the Falcons to an unlikely 10-2 record, and only the second final ranking (13th) in school history.

In the Big Eight, the cliché of the year could well have been: so close, yet so far. Nebraska head coach Tom Osborne fell a two-point conversion short of his first national championship and an undefeated season in what many believe to be one of the best college football finales ever.
