November 7th – Boulder Colorado 35, Texas A&M 34
Colorado quarterback Tyler Hansen hit tight end Patrick Devenny from 22 yards out with 2:04 to play to put the Buffs up 35-34, with Texas A&M giving up two turnovers late as Colorado prevailed, 35-34. Hansen was sacked eight times for the second consecutive week, but did pass for 271 yards and a touchdown as the Buffs raised their record to 3-6, 2-3. Rodney Stewart had 118 yards rushing and two touchdowns, and Markques Simas finally showed some of the spark that endeared him during practices the past two seasons, catching seven passes for 135 yards (Simas had 122 yards receiving for the season coming into the game).
The game, as had become the pattern for Colorado in 2009, began ominously. The stat line for the Buffs’ first two drives: net one yard, punt; net three yards; punt. Meanwhile, Texas A&M’s first drive covered 58 yards in 11 plays. For a team which had been out-scored 64-27 in the first quarter of the first eight games of the season, these were not good numbers. Still, thanks to a goal line stand, the game remained scoreless. Texas A&M drove to the Colorado one…

October 31st – Boulder Missouri 36, Colorado 17
Missouri sacked Colorado quarterback Tyler Hansen eight times and forced four turnovers, racing out to a 33-0 lead en route to a 36-17 victory. The Buffs out-scored the Tigers 14-0 in the third quarter to make it interesting, but four possessions with the score 33-17 netted two turnovers on downs, an interception, and a punt, as Colorado fell to 2-6, 1-3 on the season. A homecoming crowd of 45,634, the smallest crowd of the season, was on hand to witness a fourth straight win for Missouri in the series.
Missouri had out-scored Colorado 113-10 the past two seasons, and, in the first half of the 2009 game, it appeared as if the scores of 55-10 and 58-0 were mere preludes to the hurt the Tigers were going to put on the Buffs in 2009. The Tigers took the opening kickoff, and smartly marched 80 yards down the field. The Colorado defense did force two third downs – 3rd-and-two at the Missouri 28 yard line, and third-and-nine at the MU 47, giving Buff fans hope (after all, Colorado was ranked 19th in the nation in 3rd-down defense, at 32%; and was even better at…

September 11, 2009 Toledo 54, Colorado 38
Toledo quarterback Aaron Opelt looked like a Heisman trophy candidate in posting six touchdowns as the Toledo Rockets embarrassed the Colorado Buffaloes, 54-38, before a national ESPN television audience. Opelt connected on 15-of-23 passes for 319 yards, and rand for 109 yards and two more scores as the Rockets posted a mind-numbing 624 yards of total offense.
The game, which started at 9:00 p.m. eastern time (and didn’t finish until almost 1:00 a.m. on Saturday) began as ominously for Colorado as had the Colorado State game five days earlier. After gaining two first downs and getting the ball past mid-field in their opening drive, the Buffs were forced to punt. Taking over at their own 16, the Rockets took eight plays to score. One play in the drive encapsulated the Buffs’ first two games: On third-and-ten at the 26 yard line, Toledo quarterback Aaron Opelt dropped back to pass. With no pass rush to hinder his efforts, Opelt calmly stood in the pocket until he was able to find wide receiver Eric Page, who had gotten behind coverage. A 60-yard completion ensued, and two plays later the Rockets were in the endzone.

November 13th – Boulder Colorado 38, Kansas State 31
The stakes were not as high. It was not No. 7 Colorado versus No. 4 Michigan in front of 106,427 fans and a national television audience.
Instead, it was 5-4 Colorado versus 4-5 Kansas State in front of 46,502 fans and no television coverage.
But the yardage was the same.
And – importantly to the Buff Nation – the results were the same.
Ten years after Kordell Stewart hit Michael Westbrook for a 64-yard touchdown and a 27-26 win over Michigan, Joel Klatt hit Ron Monteilh for a 64-yard touchdown and a 38-31 win over Kansas State. The score came with five seconds remaining, culminating a wild finish which witnessed a total of 35 fourth quarter points.
The contest started out well for the Buffs, with Colorado taking a 10-0 lead early in the second quarter. Joel Klatt scored on a one-yard run, and Mason Crosby connected from 51 yards out to give Colorado the advantage. The Wildcats came right back, however, mirroring the Buffs with a one-yard run by running back Darren Sproles, and a 52-yard field goal by Joe Rheem to tie the score 10-10 just before halftime.

October 23rd – at Texas A&M No. 17 Texas A&M 29, Colorado 26 OT
Texas A&M kicker Eric Pegram connected on a 19-yard field goal in overtime, lifting the Aggies to a 29-26 win over Colorado. The Buffs’ opportunity to tie the game, or better yet, to pull out a road conference win, ended when Colorado fumbled on its overtime possession. The 73,745 on hand at Kyle Field witnessed five lead changes and over 1,000 yards of offense in the hotly contested battle.
The scoring and the offensive output began slowly, as the Buffs forged a 3-0 lead in the first quarter on a Mason Crosby field goal. Colorado stretched the advantage to 13-7 at halftime on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Joel Klatt to Evan Judge. Colorado looked to take command of the game early in the third quarter after taking the opening second half kickoff and marching 78 yards for a second Klatt-to-Judge touchdown connection. The Buffs went for two after the score but failed, leaving the score at 19-7.
Rather than folding, the Aggies scored on their next four drives, including three Pegram field goals and a Courtney Lewis two-yard touchdown run to give Texas A&M…

November 12th – @ Kansas #7 Colorado 51, Kansas 26
Kordell Stewart, who had the previous week become the first player in Big Eight history to pass for 6,000 yards and rush for 1,000 yards in a career, piled up 249 yards of total offense against the Jayhawks as the Buffs rolled to an easy 51-26 win. Stewart’s 51-yard pass to Michael Westbrook in the game’s opening drive paved the way for a 17-yard touchdown run by Rashaan Salaam as the Buffs sprinted to an early 7-0 lead on their way to a 24-7 halftime cushion.
On the day, Colorado posted 639 yards on offense, the seventh highest total in team history. Rashaan Salaam rushed for 232 yards and three scores in becoming the Buffs’ single-season record holder for rushing yards (passing Eric Bieniemy’s 1,628 yards in 1990), touchdowns (Bobby Anderson – 18 in 1969), and points (Byron “Whizzer” White – 122 in 1937). Not to be outdone, two Buff receivers placed their names in the record books as well. Michael Westbrook, who had six catches for 117 yards against Kansas, passed Charles Johnson (1991-93) to become the Buffs’ all-time leading receiver, while tight end Christian Fauria passed Dave Hestera (1981-83)…

September 24th – @ Michigan #7 Colorado 27, #4 Michigan 26
While there is much to be said about the final six seconds of the 1994 Colorado/Michigan game, the set-up is equally important. Both teams had the opportunity to dominate the game, but fell short. Momentum swayed back and forth before 106,427 fans, the largest crowd to witness a Colorado football game in school history. Midway through the second quarter, the Buffs were putting on a show for the Wolverine faithful. Up 14-3, CU threatened to make the game a rout after Kordell Stewart hit Michael Westbrook on a 27-yard touchdown with 7:54 remaining in the half.
But for the next two full quarters it was all Michigan. Wolverine running back Tim Biakabutuka scored on a four yard run to pull UM to within 14-9 with 1:14 before halftime. Going for a two point conversion to pull the Wolverines to within a field goal of the Buffs, quarterback Todd Collins was intercepted by Buffs’ linebacker Matt Russell, preserving a five point lead for Colorado.
The third quarter was a nightmare for the Buffs, as Michigan posted 17 unanswered points to take a 26-14 lead. Less than five minutes into…

Badger Mania
The Wisconsin Badgers came to Boulder September 17th for a night game to be nationally televised by ESPN.
The Badgers were also 1-0 on the 1994 season, having dispatched Eastern Michigan, 56-0. Wisconsin, ranked 10th in the nation, had been the feel-good story of 1993, having come from nowhere to post a 10-1-1 record. Claiming a share of the Big 10 title for the first time in over three decades, the Badgers made their first trip to Pasadena for the Rose Bowl since 1962. A 21-16 win over UCLA capped a magical year.
Out to prove that 1993 had been no fluke, the 1994 Wisconsin team was loaded. Fifteen starters returned for head coach Barry Alvarez, who had turned around a program which had finished 1-10 only four years earlier. Five All-Big Ten offensive players, including Big Ten MVP running back Brent Moss, returned to lead a potent attack. Colorado would certainly have its hands full.
And that was just on the field.
Off the field, another battle was to take place, as the “Cheeseheads” from Wisconsin descended on Boulder.
Amongst the most legendary of all tailgaters, the Wisconsin faithful took to Boulder like, well, foam to beer. …
