September 4th – Invesco Field, Denver Colorado 24, Colorado State 3
The Colorado Buffaloes took the first steps toward exorcising the demons of the 2009 season with a convincing 24-3 win over in-state rival Colorado State. Led by junior quarterback Tyler Hansen, a stout defensive effort, and a record-setting performance by wide receiver Scotty McKnight, the Buffs methodically took down the Rams before 60,989 on a 90-degree sun-baked day in Denver.
The Colorado defense set the tone early.
On the Rams’ second possession, third-year head coach Steve Fairchild opted to go for first down on fourth-and-one at the CSU 44-yard line. Running back T.J. Borcky, however, was stopped for no gain by sophomore linebacker Jon Major, and the Buffs took over possession. It took the Buffs six plays to score, with Tyler Hansen hitting senior transfer Travon Patterson on a 17-yard touchdown pass with 5:58 to play in the first quarter.
After teams exchanged punts, the Buffs took over at the 13:26 mark of the second quarter. Colorado then put together its most impressive drive of the game, going 82 yards in nine plays to score. The first five plays of the drive were all Rodney Stewart runs. Speedy slashed through the…

November 28th – Boulder #5 Nebraska 24, Colorado 7
Colorado had Nebraska right where they wanted them.
The Cornhuskers had lost the 1987 Game-of-the-Year to Oklahoma the week before. Nebraska, ranked No. 1 in the nation for the first time all season, fell to No. 2 Oklahoma (which had been ranked No. 1 every week previous) at home, by a final score of 17-7. Nebraska players could have been forgiven for not being up for playing Colorado after absorbing a natioanal championship run-ending defeat. Oklahoam was now heading for Miami, the Orange Bowl, and a shot at the National Championship, while Nebraska, though still playing on New Year’s Day, was relegated to the Fiesta Bowl and diminished national attention.
Colorado, angry at having been passed over for a bowl bid despite a 7-3 record, could take the opportunity to defeat hated Nebraska for the second consecutive year, tie the Cornhuskers and Oklahoma State for second place in the conference race, and earn for the Buffs much needed national respect.
The only problem was that, despite the loss to Oklahoma, Nebraska remained ranked in the top five in the country, and with good reason. Coming into the Colorado game, Nebraska was second in the nation…

October 10th – @ Oklahoma State #19 Oklahoma State 42, Colorado 17
The last time the Buffs played on my birthday, they were thumped by Nebraska 59-0 in 1981.
I should have recognized the omen.
Beaten early and often, the Buffs surrendered three touchdowns and 137 yards on the ground. Leading the charge was Thurman Thomas, who sliced through the Buffs for 110 yards on 23 carries and a five-yard touchdown run. Through the air, Oklahoma State added 257 yards and two more scores. A sixth Cowboy touchdown came in the form of a 73-yard punt return by Thurman Thomas’ understudy, one Barry Sanders.
Still, when freshman kicker Eric Hannah connected on a 32-yard field goal just before halftime, the Buffs had cut the Oklahoma State lead to 14-10. Two fumbles by Michael Simmons to start the second half gave the Cowboys possession at the Buffs 20 and 23-yard lines. The result was two quick scores and an end to the issue of which team would emerge victorious.
In fact, the Cowboys played much of the game on Colorado’s side of the field. For Oklahoma State, the average starting position on the day was their 45-yard line. Six turnovers doomed Colorado…

September 26th – Boulder Colorado 26, Washington State 17
Another day, another game, another Buff making an impression. This time it was sophomore quarterback Sal Aunese, subbing for injured starter Mark Hatcher, who made a splash. Aunese did not start, but played a significant role in leading Colorado to a 26-17 win over Washington State. Aunese carried the ball 22 times for 185 yards and one touchdown. Aunese also completed one of his three passes, a thirty-yarder to Eric Bieniemy.
Washington State, led by first-year coach Dennis Erickson, were 2-1 coming into the game, having beaten Fresno State and Wyoming before falling to Michigan. Erickson brought in a Cougar squad which had finished 3-7-1 in 1986.
In all, the Buffs accumulated a season high 425 yards on the ground against the Cougars. Still, the Buffs led only 19-17 after Washington State quarterback Timm Rosenbach connected on a 16-yard scoring pass to tight end Chris Leighton with 11:17 to play. After J.J. Flannigan bobbled a Sal Aunese pitch, fumbling at the Colorado 25, the Buffs were in a position to lose. The Colorado defense rose to the occasion, though, forcing a field goal attempt. The kicked sailed wide, and the Buffs retained…

September 19th – Boulder Colorado 31, Stanford 17
Colorado looked to right its ship, and even the 1987 season mark at 1-1, with a game against Stanford.
The Cardinal came into the game 0-1, having lost its season-opener to Washington, 31-21. Stanford was not to be overlooked, however, having posted an 8-4 mark in 1986, including a trip to the Gator Bowl. Stanford’s bowl appearance had been its first in eight years, and the first for fourth-year head coach Jack Elway.
Unlike the Oregon game, which ended 10-7, scoring in the Colorado-Stanford game came fast and furious. The Buffs took the opening kickoff and traveled 75 yards in eight plays to take the lead. Tiny (5′ 6″, 185 pounds) freshman halfback Eric Bieniemy did the honors from two yards out, giving Colorado its first lead of the 1987 season, 7-0. Stanford quickly responded with a touchdown drive of its own, scoring on a 48-yard pass from Greg Ennis to Walter Batson against the Buffs’ heralded secondary.
On the Buffs’ next series, halfback J.J. Flannigan scored on a 17-yard run to cap an 80-yard drive. With 8:27 still remaining in the first quarter, the score was 14-7 Colorado. The two teams…

On the Road Again
The 1986 season was a watershed in Colorado football history. Yes, the Buffs had finished 1985 with a winning season (7-5), and had gone to a bowl game for the first time in almost a decade, but it is the 1986 season which is seen as the turning point in Buff fortunes. Still, when the Buffs opened the 1986 campaign 0-4, it was hard not to consider that 1985 was an aberration, and that the aura of losing was once again to permeate the Colorado campus. Colorado rallied, though, to post a surprising 6-1 Big Eight record, including an historic 20-10 win over Nebraska. Even a 28-0 loss to No. 4 Oklahoma did little to dampen fans’ spirits. After the Buffs dominated Kansas State, 49-3, to post a 6-5 record and the right to participate in a bowl, Colorado fans didn’t care where the game was or who the opponent would be. We were just glad to be invited.
The location? Houston, Texas. The game? The Bluebonnet Bowl against the Baylor Bears. What was a Buff fan to do?
Two words: “Road Trip”!
Willie Nelson’s “On the Road Again” sings the…

November 22nd – @ Kansas State Colorado 49, Kansas State 3
Colorado rebounded from the poor offensive showing against the Sooners with its highest scoring output of the season, routing the Wildcats from Kansas State, 49-3. Quarterback Mark Hatcher did not play, but it didn’t matter, as backup freshman quarterback Marc Walters was perfect in the air, completing all four passes he threw for 111 yards and a touchdown. On the ground, the Buffs rambled for 407 yards and six touchdowns. Walters chipped in 88 yards and two touchdowns, while fellow freshman O.C. Oliver broke the 100 yard barrier for the first time in his career, cruising to 137 yards on only 15 carries. For the defense, Solomon Wilcots contributed two interceptions.
The Buffs started slowly, taking a 7-0 lead after the first quarter on a 22-yard pass from Marc Walters to O.C. Oliver. A three-touchdown output in the second quarter, though, put the game out of reach. Two Walters’ touchdown runs, the first from 13 yards out, the second from 34 yards, was sandwiched between a four-yard scoring run by O.C. Oliver. Only a 50-yard field goal, the only score of the day for Kansas State, gave the announced crowd of…

November 8th – Boulder Colorado 17, Kansas 10
In a reverse from the Oklahoma State game, Colorado played well early, then hung on late to post a 17-10 win over Kansas. Rolling to a 17-0 second quarter lead, the Buffs scored on a one yard run by junior halfback Mike Marquez, a 24-yard field goal by Dave DeLine, and a 34-yard reverse by freshman split end Jeff Campbell. The latter score was a reprise of the two reverses Campbell ran so successfully in the Nebraska game. The Buffs were up 17-0 with 8:42 still remaining in the first half. Those in attendance at Folsom Field that afternoon were able to sit back, bundle up on an otherwise chilly and unpleasant afternoon, presuming the rest of the game against the 3-5 Jayhawks (0-4 in conference play) would be a cakewalk.
Make that sleepwalk.
After Kansas quarterback Kelly Donahue scored on a one yard run to make the score 17-10 with 8:47 still left in the third quarter, Kansas was within a touchdown of the Buffs, and would remain that way for the rest of the contest. In the stands, for those of us who had seen the Buffs fold all too many times…
