Spring Grades – Offense

While grading the Colorado football team is more difficult this year due to the closing of spring practices from the public, there is enough cumulative information available to start taking a look at how the 2012 Buffs are shaping up … at least until 27 true freshmen hit campus this summer.

Quarterbacks

Spring Game statistics – Sophomore Connor Wood, 7-of-10 passing for 137 yards and two touchdowns; red-shirt freshman John Schrock, 3-of-8 passing for 26 yards; red-shirt freshman Stevie Joe Dorman, two-for-two passing for 34 yards. Did not participate: sophomore Nick Hirschman (injured); incoming true freshman Shane Dillon; likely junior transfer Jordan Webb).

Prior to the Spring game, Colorado head coach Jon Embree said transfer Connor Wood had “finished (the spring) strong,” but added that Wood “needs to relax . . . sometimes he presses, whether it’s over-gripping the ball or trying to throw it real hard. He just needs to relax. But he had a good spring.”

Of Wood’s performance at the Spring game, Embree “I thought No. 5 was sharp. He missed a couple of deep balls . . . but I thought he played well.”

Embree said Wood, a …

Pac-12 Notes – January

New Pac-12 coaches having mixed recruiting results

Colorado faces six new head coaches in 2012, four from the Pac-12.

Buff fans are very familiar with a new coaching staff having to scramble to put together a recruiting Class, having lived through it just a year ago.

So, as Signing Day approaches, how are the new Pac-12 coaches doing?

Jim Mora, Jr. – UCLA

While Rich Rodriguez at Arizona and Mike Leach at Washington State were sexier hires, no one is doing as well as Mora in putting together a top recruiting Class.

When Mora was hired in early December, the Bruins had their fare share of commitments, with 12 verbals. Included on that list were two four-star players … but there were also five two-star prospects.

Since his hire, Mora and his coaching staff have been the talk of the recruiting world, with UCLA picking up one top-flight star after another. The Class is now up to 25, and Mora has added no player lower than three-stars, with three four-star and one five-star player giving their commitments to the Bruins.

With just a few days to go before Siginng Day, UCLA has the No. 18 Class in the …

Report: Mike Leach to be hired at Washington State

Mike Leach has reached agreement to become the new football coach at Washington State.

Washington State athletic Director Bill Moos said Tuesday he wanted a guy who produces “”flashy offenses.” Leach is among the flashiest. Oregon’s Chip Kelly now has two guys — Leach and Rodriguez — who want to match the Ducks ludicrous speed approach.

Said Pac-12 defensive coordinators: “Drat.”

Leach’s contract is for five years and will make him the third-highest paid coach in the Pac-12, CBS Sports reported, citing an unnamed source. That means he will eclipse Washington’s Steve Sarkisian, who makes $2,250,000 annually.

Wulff was the Pac-12′s lowest paid coach at $600,000 … leaving Colorado’s Jon Embree, at $750,000 per year, as the lowest paid coach in the Pac-12 (and by a wide margin).

The hiring of Leach signals a big transformation in thinking in Pullman. And an expectations of big results.

According to ESPN’s Ted Miller, the job sets up well for Leach, too. He’s got two quarterbacks, junior Jeff Tuel and redshirt freshman Connor Halliday, who might be more talented as passers than any of the QBs who put up big numbers for …

October 29, 2011 – at Arizona State           No. 23 Arizona State 48, Colorado 14

The University of Colorado continued to compile all-time (negative) records in losing its first-ever game against a Pac-12 South rival, falling 48-14 to No. 23 Arizona State. In falling behind 21-0 in the first quarter, the result of the game was never in doubt. The Buffs surrendered over 30 points for the sixth straight game, which last happened in 1983. Colorado also gave up over 500 yards of total offense (522) for the fourth consecutive game, something which had never happened before.

Then, of course, there was the road losing streak, extended to 22 games (the previous record for consecutive road losses, in the 121-year history of the program, was ten).

The Colorado offense did show some signs of life against Arizona State, posting 420 yards, the second-highest total of the season (582 v. Cal). A season-high five turnovers, however, prevented the Buffs from ever mounting a serious challenge.

The Sun Devil Stadium crowd of 53,168 hardly had time to apply sunblock before the game was out of hand. With a game-time temperature of 85 degrees, the Sun Devils came out hot. Arizona State became …

Hawai’i 34, Colorado 17

//posted 9.5.2011

September 3, 2011          Hawai’i 34, Colorado 17

As had been the case in 2010, Colorado failed to score in the first half against Hawai’i.

As had been the case in 2010, Colorado stormed back with a strong second half effort.

In 2010, the Buffs fell behind 10-0 at halftime, but dominated in the second half, out-scoring the Hawai’i 31-3 in cruising to a 31-10 victory.

In 2011, the Buffs fell behind 17-0 at halftime, played well at times, and had their chances, but it was not enough, as Colorado lost its first game under Jon Embree, 34-17.

Colorado had a game plan to withstand the onslaught of quarterback Bryant Moniz and the prolific passing game of the Hawai’i Rainbows. Pressure Moniz with an array of blitzes, trying to keep the senior quarterback from making deep throws, while protecting the Buffs’ young secondary.

The game plan was a success early, as the Buffs sacked Moniz three times in the first quarter, and held the 5,000-yard passer to a one-for-seven start through the air.

Unfortunately for the Buffs’ defense, they failed to account for the ability of Bryant Moniz to run with the football.

Moniz shredded the Colorado defense with his …

Spring Practice – 2011

//posted 4.6.2011

April 7th

“Guys are showing who they are”

Colorado conducted its last practice before the Spring game on Thursday, with the practice, at the last minute, being opened to the public. Jon Embree described the two-hour run-through as a “good practice. The defense had a couple of lapses, but otherwise they did well. Offensively, we got some things accomplished, some things done we wanted to get done as far as some install stuff. Guys are showing who they are.”

The Colorado head coach then raised some eyebrows when he was asked about whether there were some players who had not lived up to expectations. “It’s a privilege to be a Buffalo; it’s not a right,” said Embree. “If they can’t play, and they’re not doing what they are supposed to do academically, and buying into the program, they won’t be here.” Embree went on, ” Some won’t be back; everyone’s year-to-year.  It’s simple. I don’t ask a lot. I want effort; I want you to compete. I want you to do it on and off the field. That’s basically all I ask … and for some guys, they can’t do that.”

Spring Practice Preview -

Special Teams

Roster: Toney Clemons (Sr.); Arthur Jaffee (Sr.); Brian Lockridge (Sr.); Will Jefferson (Jr.); Justin Castor (So.); Zach Grossnickle (So.); Ryan Iverson (So.); Justin Gorman (R-Fr.)

Players Lost: Aric Goodman; Joe Silipo; Scotty McKnight; Cody Hawkins; Travon Patterson

Numbers Don’t Lie

Yuck.

There was very little which was special about the special teams play by the University of Colorado in 2010.

Colorado was ranked 88th in net punting last year, with Zach Grossnickle struggling to a 35.7 yards net average (Colorado’s opponents’ net average was 40.2). Senior kicker Aric Goodman connected on two-thirds of his attempts (10-for-15), but was only accurate half the time from beyond 30 yards (5-for-10).

In the return game, Colorado was adequate at best. There were several long kickoff returns, with a long of 89 yards by Arthur Jaffee against Iowa State, but the Buffs were unable to come up with a kick returner which they felt comfortable with, as four players posted between eight and 14 kickoff returns during the season. All four – Arthur Jaffee (14); Toney Clemons (10); Brian Lockridge (10); and Will Jefferson (8) – return in 2011, but there are no guarantees that …
