Ohio State 37, Colorado 17

September 24th – @ Ohio State          Ohio State 37, Colorado 17

On a beautiful fall day in Columbus, Ohio, the Buckeye fans found their quarterback of the future … while Colorado fans continued to be haunted by their past.

True freshman quarterback Braxton Miller made his first career start for Ohio State, and did just enough to lead the Buckeyes to a 37-17 victory before a crowd of 105,096. Miller completed only five of 13 passes for 83 yards, but had two touchdowns passes on the day. Miller also contributed 83 yards rushing, making life difficult for a Colorado defense forced into pressure situations all afternoon.

“We have a long way to go as a program,” first-year coach Jon Embree said. “We have a long way to go from the standpoint of getting to where we are competing and not hoping to upset an Ohio State.”

For Colorado, senior quarterback Tyler Hansen went 22-of-39 for 238 yards and two touchdowns, and the Buffs were close to the Buckeyes in total yards, 336-314, but the numbers belie the fact that the Buffs were never in the game.

The afternoon started off poorly for the Buffs … and then went downhill. A…

September 17th – at Denver          Colorado 28, Colorado State 14

Senior quarterback Tyler Hansen was in on all four Colorado touchdowns, as the Buffs doubled up the Colorado State Rams in Denver, 28-14. In leading the Buffs to the first win of the Jon Embree era, Hansen threw for two touchdowns and ran for two others, including a two-yard run to cap an epic 16-play, 85-yard drive in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.

On the day, Hansen threw for 215 yards and two touchdowns, also scoring on a pair of two-yard runs on the afternoon. Hansen’s second run, with 1:15 to play in the game, finished off a drive which took 10:03 off the fourth quarter clock. Backing up Hansen was senior running back Rodney Stewart, who had 98 yards on 19 carries, to go with 93 yards on seven catches.

First Half

Colorado State came into the Cinch Jeans Rocky Mountain Showdown at Sports Authority Field with a 2-0 record, but the Rams were a seven-point underdog to the 0-2 Buffs. In the first quarter, though, the Rams seemed determined to remind fans and pundits that they were, in fact, the undefeated team.

The Colorado defense…

E Pluribus Unum

Out of many, one.

One drive. One score. One victory.

Will the Colorado State game, more precisely, the fourth quarter of the Colorado State game, be a turning point for the Colorado football program and its long-suffering Buff Nation?

Since December 6, 2010, when Jon Embree was named the 24th permanent head coach in Colorado football history, Embree has been preaching that it was time for the Colorado program to return to its successful roots. In order to do that, the Buffs had to re-establish a power running game. “When this program has been at its best,” Embree said at his introductory press conference, “it’s had its [players] come out on this field or go somewhere else and just line up and run you over.”

The Buffs appeared primed to do just that. Colorado returned the majority of its offensive line, a senior returning starter at quarterback, and one Rodney Stewart. The senior running back posted 1,318 rushing yards in 2010, and opened the 2011 season within shouting distance (1,196 yards) of becoming the all-time leading rusher in Colorado history.

The pieces in place, Colorado traveled to Hawai’i to take on a Warrior team which had surrendered 106 yards…

Hawai’i 34, Colorado 17

September 3, 2011          Hawai’i 34, Colorado 17

As had been the case in 2010, Colorado failed to score in the first half against Hawai’i.

As had been the case in 2010, Colorado stormed back with a strong second half effort.

In 2010, the Buffs fell behind 10-0 at halftime, but dominated in the second half, out-scoring the Hawai’i 31-3 in cruising to a 31-10 victory.

In 2011, the Buffs fell behind 17-0 at halftime, played well at times, and had their chances, but it was not enough, as Colorado lost its first game under Jon Embree, 34-17.

Colorado had a game plan to withstand the onslaught of quarterback Bryant Moniz and the prolific passing game of the Hawai’i Rainbows. Pressure Moniz with an array of blitzes, trying to keep the senior quarterback from making deep throws, while protecting the Buffs’ young secondary.

The game plan was a success early, as the Buffs sacked Moniz three times in the first quarter, and held the 5,000-yard passer to a one-for-seven start through the air.

Unfortunately for the Buffs’ defense, they failed to account for the ability of Bryant Moniz to run with the football.

Moniz shredded the Colorado defense with his…

“T.I.P.S.” for the first game of the Jon Embree era

Since early last December, it has been an era of good feeling in Boulder.

The five year reign of Dan Hawkins ended after a record-setting loss to Kansas in November, but it wasn’t until December 6, 2010, when Jon Embree was hired as the 24th football head coach, that the Buff Nation could begin to look ahead. Embree was a popular hire, with his popularity only enhanced when he brought in several coaches with ties to Colorado, including both of his coordinators, Eric Bieniemy and Greg Brown.

Since his hiring, Embree has restored enthusiasm, reinstated traditions, and inspired the Buff Nation. Season ticket sales have soared, with an increase in sales normally only seen in the ticket office after ten or eleven win seasons.

Jon Embree has done everything which could have been asked of him since he was hired.

All he has to do now is win football games.

The Jon Embree era at Colorado begins on the road, as the Buffs take on a Hawai’i team which went 10-4 in 2010.

Below are the “T.I.P.S.” for the game against the Warriors, broken down into categories of: “Talent”; “Intangibles”; “Preparation/Schedule”; and “Statistics”.

Pac-12 falling behind?

According to an article by Bruce Feldman of CBSSportsline, entitled “At first glance, Pac-12 seems lacking“, the league lost some luster in the first weekend of the college football season.

The lead, of course, was how Oregon was dismantled by a depleted LSU squad, 40-27, in the marquee matchup of the weekend.

Feldman noted how Chip Kelly, head coach of the league’s present flagship school, Oregon, pointed out before the LSU game that those teams that handled Oregon are great ones, well-coached and stocked with outstanding athlete. He echoed that point, again, after losing to LSU: “They’ve got a little bit different athlete running around out there right now,” Kelly said. “Looking at their D-line, standing next to them, walking off the field, they don’t look like the kind of guys we see. That’s the common trait, the trait you saw in the Auburn game.”

“As blunt as that is, that’s still not the kind of talk you’d expect to hear from the coach of a powerhouse program”, wrote Feldman.

Other than Oregon and Colorado, the other teams to lose in week one were UCLA and Oregon State. The Bruins’ defense was no match for Houston’s offense,…

California wide receiver in Boulder

Cameron Countryman, a 5’11 1/2″, 170-pound wide receiver prospect, from Beverly Hills, California, was in Boulder on Wednesday.

Countryman is considered a two-star prospect by Scout.com, and is not yet rated by Rivals. Countryman averaged 25.7 yards per reception and 102.7 receiving yards per game in 2010. Countryman has offers from Utah and Arizona State from the Pac-12, as well as schools like Air Force, Princeton, Harvard, and Northwestern (obviously, not an eligibility risk). YouTube highlights

“I love Colorado,” Countryman told BuffStampede.com last week. “[Buffaloes offensive coordinator and running backs] coach [Eric] Bieniemy has been recruiting me and he is making it hard to say no to go there. We are talking on the phone constantly every week. He is a great guy. I don’t feel like he is saying the same thing to 100 different kids. I feel like we have a bond and a connection and I appreciate all the time he has given to talk to me.”

Still, Countryman might go to another Pac-12 school if he gets an offer. “Hopefully Cal will offer soon, too,” he said. “I am praying for a Cal offer because I…

Spring Game – 2011

//posted 6.9.2011

“I’m happy with where we are … we just need to keep working and improving”

The Colorado Buffaloes completed Spring practice, 2011, with a 105-play scrimmage before 15,655 at Folsom Field in the first-ever Spring game with an evening kickoff (6:00 p.m).

Senior quarterback Tyler Hansen completed 8-of-15 passes for 124 yards and a touchdown in his seven drives of the scrimmage. While not as efficient as Hansen’s 18-for-19 performance in the second spring scrimmage a week earlier, the odds are still on Hansen being named the starting quarterback for the season on Tuesday. “I feel really comfortable as a player, and this offense is really good,” said Hansen. “(Accuracy) was my goal, and I’ve been working on my mechanics with coach (Rip) Scherer. I feel I’m getting a lot more accurate.”

“I wouldn’t say from Day One (that he was impressed with Hansen), but I am happy with his productivity,” said head coach Jon Embree. “He’s done a good job with his command of the offense, getting them in and out of the huddle. We need to get better with our tempo … But, overall, I am pleased with how he’s competed.”

The quarterbacks vying for the backup position had mixed…
