September  3, 2005 - Boulder           Colorado 31, Colorado State 28

For the fourth year in a row, the “Rocky Mountain Showdown” between Colorado and Colorado State came down to the final minute of play.

For the third year in a row, the Buffs prevailed.

Colorado opened its 2005 campaign by defeating the Rams, 31-28, before a sweltering Folsom Field record crowd of 54,972. Mason Crosby connected from 47 yards out with four seconds remaining to give the Buffs the victory.

Unlike 2003 and 2004, when the Buffs watched double digit leads evaporate against the Rams, only to win those games in the waning moments, much of the 2005 contest was controlled by the Rams.

The Rams took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a one-yard run by Jimmy Green. The Buffs then countered in the second quarter with ten unanswered points on a 32-yard Mason Crosby field goal and a one-yard run on fourth down by senior running back Lawrence Vickers.

The Colorado lead lasted just two minutes, however, as Buff killers Justin Holland and David Anderson hooked up on a one yard touchdown pass to give the Rams a 14-10 halftime lead.

The Rams stretched the …

 The Jim Thorpe Classic

The Buffs were anxious to play a 12th game in 2001- anything to get the season started, and put behind them the 3-8 nightmare which was the 2000 campaign.

The inaugural Jim Thorpe Classic provided such an opportunity.

The game was designated to honor the legendary Thorpe, who had starred in college at Carlisle Indian School in 1912 and 1913 before going on to help bring recognition to the fledgling National Football League.  The Jim Thorpe Award, given to the nation’s top defensive back since its inception in 1986, had a special place in the hearts of Buff fans.  Colorado had already had two winners of the award, with Deon Figures claiming the prize in 1992, followed by Chris Hudson in 1994.

The Buffs’ opponent for the game was Fresno State.  The Bulldogs were in search of respect.  In order to bring attention to his program, head coach Pat Hill scheduled ambitiously.  In addition to the Buffs, Fresno State would in 2001 play non-conference games against Oregon State and Wisconsin.  The Beavers were ranked #11 in the preseason poll (and ranked #1 by Sports Illustrated in its preseason picks), while Wisconsin was ranked #22.  …

2001 – National and Big 12 Recap

The Miami Hurricanes won the 2001 national championship, doing so in convincing fashion.  The Hurricanes, under first-year head coach Larry Coker, finished the season 12-0, the nation’s only undefeated team. Miami capped its unblemished season with a 37-14 demolition of Nebraska in the Rose Bowl.

Finding a worthy opponent for Miami to play in the Rose Bowl was left for the Bowl Championship Series computers. Nebraska, despite not winning its Big 12 conference title (or even the North Division), edged out Colorado by .05 points in the BCS computations for the opportunity to face the Hurricanes as the #2 BCS team.  That the Cornhuskers did not justify the invitation in the lopsided loss to the Hurricanes left Colorado and Oregon, #3 and #4 in the BCS standings, to ponder what might have been.  The Ducks, 11-1 and Pac-10 Conference champions, took out their frustrations by dismantling Colorado, 38-16, in the Fiesta Bowl to finish #2 in the nation.

Despite lopsided losses in BCS bowl games, the Big 12 had a banner year.  Colorado won its first Big 12 championship with a 39-37 win over Texas to lead four Big 12 teams into the …

November 27th – @ Nebraska           #14 Nebraska 16, Colorado 14

“General” Robert Neyland, longtime head coach at the University of Tennessee, is a legendary name in the annals of college football. In leading the Volunteers to over 160 wins in 20 seasons, the College Football Hall of Fame coach was used to winning. “Almost all games,” Neyland pointed out, “are lost by the losers, not won by the winners.”

Such was the case in Memorial Stadium on Thanksgiving weekend, 1998.

The Buffs, despite facing a Nebraska team equally riddled with injuries and self-doubt, came out playing like an intimidated team. Early mistakes proved to be the difference in a frustrating 16-14 defeat, giving Nebraska a seven game winning streak over the Buffs.

Just as was the case in 1995, when the Buffs allowed Ahman Green to score on a 57-yard run less than two minutes into the game, (on the way to a 44-21 loss) and in 1992, when an interception led to a three-yard scoring run by Derek Brown with only 1:14 off of the first quarter clock (en route to a 52-7 rout), Colorado played early like a team destined to lose.

After a touchback on the opening …
