October 1, 2009 – at West Virginia West Virginia 35, Colorado 24
West Virginia running back Noel Devine rushed for a career-high 220 yards, including a 77-yard touchdown on the Mountaineers’ second play from scrimmage, leading West Virginia to a 35-24 win over Colorado in Morgantown. Cody Hawkins had 292 yards passing and two touchdowns for Colorado, but also threw three inteceptions. Running back Rodney Stewart had 105 yards rushing for the Buffs, and tight end Riar Geer had a career-best 113 yards receiving, but a combination of missed opportunities and missed assignments doomed Colorado to a 1-3 record in non-conference play.
The game, played in good weather before a crowd of 60,055 at Milan Puskar Stadium in Morgantown, started ominously for Colorado.
The Buffs took the opening kickoff and strung together a 10-play, 45-yard drive, stalling at the WVU 23 yard line. Aric Goodman, the hero of the 2008 game against West Virginia, failed in this instance, missing a 40-yard field goal attempt. It took the Mountaineers only two plays to take the lead, with running back Noel Devine slicing through the middle of the Colorado defensive line, then outracing the Buff secondary for a 77-yard touchdown.
Two plays, 77 yards, 18 seconds.…

September 19th – Boulder Colorado 24, Wyoming 0
On a day when Washington, 0-12 in 2008, took out #3 USC (16-13), you knew that anything could happen.
The much-maligned Colorado defense held Wyoming to 230 yards of total offense in posting the first shutout for Colorado since the Buffs took out Miami (Ohio), 42-0, almost exactly two years ago.
The Buffs’ offense was not overwhelming, but was much more effective than it had been the first two games of 2009. Cody Hawkins hit on 17-of-31 passes for 175 yards, and Rodney Stewart rushed for 127 yards and two touchdowns. Scotty McKnight had five catches for 77 yards, and had a timely fumble recovery for a touchdown.
Colorado, which had fallen behind by double digits in each of the first two games, turned the tables in game three. The Buffs took only 1:30 of game clock to take the first lead of the season. The eight-play, 69-yard drive was finished off in bizarre fashion. Demetrius Sumler, on first-and-ten at the Wyoming 17 yard line, took off for a fifteen yard gain, but fumbled the ball. Fortunately for Colorado fans, the fumble was recovered by wide receiver Scotty McKnight at the Wyoming two yard…

September 11, 2009 Toledo 54, Colorado 38
Toledo quarterback Aaron Opelt looked like a Heisman trophy candidate in posting six touchdowns as the Toledo Rockets embarrassed the Colorado Buffaloes, 54-38, before a national ESPN television audience. Opelt connected on 15-of-23 passes for 319 yards, and rand for 109 yards and two more scores as the Rockets posted a mind-numbing 624 yards of total offense.
The game, which started at 9:00 p.m. eastern time (and didn’t finish until almost 1:00 a.m. on Saturday) began as ominously for Colorado as had the Colorado State game five days earlier. After gaining two first downs and getting the ball past mid-field in their opening drive, the Buffs were forced to punt. Taking over at their own 16, the Rockets took eight plays to score. One play in the drive encapsulated the Buffs’ first two games: On third-and-ten at the 26 yard line, Toledo quarterback Aaron Opelt dropped back to pass. With no pass rush to hinder his efforts, Opelt calmly stood in the pocket until he was able to find wide receiver Eric Page, who had gotten behind coverage. A 60-yard completion ensued, and two plays later the Rockets were in the endzone.

November 25th – Boulder Nebraska 30, Colorado 3
Colorado failed spectacularly in its attempt to win the Big 12 North on its home field, falling to Nebraska, 30-3.
The Buffs were held to a season-low 212 yards of total offense, but were dominated in all aspects of the game, leaving the door open for Iowa State to claim the North Division title with a win over Kansas the following day.
In a game which meant so much, the day actually began quite well for the Buffs. After forcing a three-and-out possession by Nebraska to start the game, the Buffs’ first play from scrimmage featured a 45-yard run by running back Hugh Charles. The drive stalled after that run, but Colorado did take a 3-0 lead after Mason Crosby hit a 33-yard field goal.
So much for the good news.
Nebraska responded with a field goal drive of their own to tie the game midway through the first quarter. The remainder of the half belonged to Nebraska as the Cornhuskers built a 20-3 halftime lead. Cory Ross, a Denver native not recruited by Gary Barnett and the Buffs, scored on a 19-yard screen pass from quarterback Zac Taylor early in the…

November 12th - @ Iowa State Iowa State 30, No. 22 Colorado 16
Iowa State took advantage of strong winds and two defensive touchdowns, using both to upset No.22 Colorado in Ames, 30-16.
In a game delayed at the start due to a tornado in the region, the Cyclones blew some ill wind of their own, returning a fumble and an interception 66 yards apiece to provide the final margin. With the win, Iowa State kept its hopes for a Big 12 North Division title alive.
The opening kickoff for the evening contest was delayed for over half an hour due to concerns surrounding a local tornado and accompanying lighting. The storm did not bring rain, but did bring wind gusting up to 45 mph, with the wind becoming the story of the first half. Colorado, playing against the wind in the first quarter, started its first four drives on its own 20 yard line. Four possessions: a total of 15 yards.
Meanwhile, the Cyclones took advantage of having the wind at their backs, building a 13-0 advantage. Iowa State kicker Bret Culbertson kicked two short field goals (including one on the second play of the second quarter, culminating a 54 yard…

November 5th – Boulder No. 25 Colorado 41, Missouri 12
Senior running back Lawrence Vickers rushed for 85 yards and four touchdowns, leading Colorado to a 41-12 win over Missouri in Boulder.
The victory put the Buffs in the driver’s seat in the race for the Big 12 North Division crown, giving Colorado a two game lead on the division with two games to play. Brad Smith, who would become the NCAA’s all-time leading rusher for quarterbacks during the game, was held to just 16 yards on 13 carries as the Colorao defense surrendered only one touchdown drive on the afternoon.
The first touchdown run for Vickers came on the Buffs’ second possession of the game. Covering 94 yards in just seven plays, Colorado scored on a Vickers’ one yard run midway through the first quarter. Missouri answered, however, with an 80-yard drive of its own, with Brad Smith hitting receiver William Franklin from 20 yards out. A missed extra point left Colorado in the lead, 7-6.
The remainder of the half belonged to the Buffs. Vickers scored on runs of 20 yards and two yards to give Colorado a 21-6 cushion, and Mason Crosby hit on a 56-yard field…

October 29th – @ Kansas State Colorado 23, Kansas State 20
Mason Crosby kicked a 50-yard field goal with six seconds remaining to give Colorado a 23-20 win over Kansas State.
The victory was the second last minute win in a row over the Wildcats, as the Buffs had handed Kansas State a 38-31 setback in Boulder on a Joel Klatt to Ron Monteilh 64-yard touchdown with five seconds left in 2004. The Colorado win, combined with a loss to Kansas by Big 12 North co-leader Missouri, gave the Buffs sole possession of the Big 12 North lead with a 4-1 league record.
Leading the Buffs was Joel Klatt, whose 272 passing yards on the blustery afternoon gave the senior quarterback 6,579 career yards, surpassing Kordell Stewart’s record of 6,481 yards (1992-94). Klatt’s latest record was the 32nd in his career at Colorado.
The game started out well for the Buffs, with Colorado scoring in just five plays to open the contest. A 64-yard pass from Klatt to tight end Quinn Sypniewski set up the Buffs at the Wildcat one-yard line. On the next play, Lawrence Vickers did the honors, and the Buffs were up 7-0 less than 90 seconds…

October 22nd – Boulder Colorado 44, Kansas 13
Joel Klatt passed for four touchdowns, becoming the Colorado all-time touchdown pass leader, leading the Buffs to a 44-13 win over Kansas.
Klatt ended the evening with 42 touchdown passes, two more than Koy Detmer (1992-96), but it was the Colorado defense and special teams which turned a close game into a rout.
Colorado scored on its second possession of the game, taking over on the Kansas 43-yard line after a failed attempt by the Jayhawks on a fourth down near midfield. Klatt hit tight end Quinn Sypniewski from 20 yards out for the score, giving the Buffs a 7-0 lead. Four plays later, the Buffs were up 9-0, after a fourth down snap sailed over the head of Kansas punter Kyle Tucker for a safety. It seemed, with 8:12 left to play in the first quarter, that the rout was on.
The Jayhawks, though, had other plans. Quarterback Jason Swanson came in for ineffective Brian Luke, and the Kansas offense began to see production. A 75-yard drive netted a field goal to cut the Colorado advantage to 9-3. After Klatt hit Joe Klopfenstein on a 40-yard score to start the second…
