September 18, 2010 – Boulder Colorado 31, Hawai’i 13
Alfred Williams couldn’t have done it any better himself.
Perhaps inspired by the halftime ceremonies honoring the Colorado All-American’s induction into the College Football Hall of Fame, the Buffs turned a 10-0 halftime deficit into a 31-13 rout of Hawai’i. Quarterback Tyler Hansen passed for 200 yards and two touchdowns, while Brian Lockridge and Rodney Stewart both rushed for over 100 yards as Colorado erased a poor first half showing with a dominant second half performance in the Buffs’ 2010 home opener.
Before many of the 47,840 in attendance had settled into their seats, the Hawai’i Warriors set about making sure Buff fans did not forget the 52-7 rout handed to the Buffs by Cal seven days earlier. On the second play of the game, Hawai’i quarterback Bryant Moniz hit Kealoha Pilares on a crossing route which turned into an 80 yard gain. Jimmy Smith caught Pilares at the Colorado three yard line, but a Warrior score, and another Colorado debacle, seemed imminent.
Then Hawai’i did Colorado a huge favor.
The Warriors ran the ball.
A week after rushing for only ten yards against Army, the Warriors decided to run the ball …

November 7th – Boulder Colorado 35, Texas A&M 34
Colorado quarterback Tyler Hansen hit tight end Patrick Devenny from 22 yards out with 2:04 to play to put the Buffs up 35-34, with Texas A&M giving up two turnovers late as Colorado prevailed, 35-34. Hansen was sacked eight times for the second consecutive week, but did pass for 271 yards and a touchdown as the Buffs raised their record to 3-6, 2-3. Rodney Stewart had 118 yards rushing and two touchdowns, and Markques Simas finally showed some of the spark that endeared him during practices the past two seasons, catching seven passes for 135 yards (Simas had 122 yards receiving for the season coming into the game).
The game, as had become the pattern for Colorado in 2009, began ominously. The stat line for the Buffs’ first two drives: net one yard, punt; net three yards; punt. Meanwhile, Texas A&M’s first drive covered 58 yards in 11 plays. For a team which had been out-scored 64-27 in the first quarter of the first eight games of the season, these were not good numbers. Still, thanks to a goal line stand, the game remained scoreless. Texas A&M drove to the Colorado …

October 31st – Boulder Missouri 36, Colorado 17
Missouri sacked Colorado quarterback Tyler Hansen eight times and forced four turnovers, racing out to a 33-0 lead en route to a 36-17 victory. The Buffs out-scored the Tigers 14-0 in the third quarter to make it interesting, but four possessions with the score 33-17 netted two turnovers on downs, an interception, and a punt, as Colorado fell to 2-6, 1-3 on the season. A homecoming crowd of 45,634, the smallest crowd of the season, was on hand to witness a fourth straight win for Missouri in the series.
Missouri had out-scored Colorado 113-10 the past two seasons, and, in the first half of the 2009 game, it appeared as if the scores of 55-10 and 58-0 were mere preludes to the hurt the Tigers were going to put on the Buffs in 2009. The Tigers took the opening kickoff, and smartly marched 80 yards down the field. The Colorado defense did force two third downs – 3rd-and-two at the Missouri 28 yard line, and third-and-nine at the MU 47, giving Buff fans hope (after all, Colorado was ranked 19th in the nation in 3rd-down defense, at 32%; and was even better …

September 3, 2005 - Boulder Colorado 31, Colorado State 28
For the fourth year in a row, the “Rocky Mountain Showdown” between Colorado and Colorado State came down to the final minute of play.
For the third year in a row, the Buffs prevailed.
Colorado opened its 2005 campaign by defeating the Rams, 31-28, before a sweltering Folsom Field record crowd of 54,972. Mason Crosby connected from 47 yards out with four seconds remaining to give the Buffs the victory.
Unlike 2003 and 2004, when the Buffs watched double digit leads evaporate against the Rams, only to win those games in the waning moments, much of the 2005 contest was controlled by the Rams.
The Rams took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a one-yard run by Jimmy Green. The Buffs then countered in the second quarter with ten unanswered points on a 32-yard Mason Crosby field goal and a one-yard run on fourth down by senior running back Lawrence Vickers.
The Colorado lead lasted just two minutes, however, as Buff killers Justin Holland and David Anderson hooked up on a one yard touchdown pass to give the Rams a 14-10 halftime lead.
The Rams stretched the …

Preseason – 2000
Looking forward to the 2000 Colorado football season, the proverbial glass could be seen as being either half empty or half full.
On the positive side, the Buffs had played inspired football the second half of the 1999 season. Colorado endured close losses to top ten Kansas State and Nebraska before mauling Boston College in the Insight.com Bowl. Head coach Gary Barnett spoke of how the players had “bought into” the system the second half of his first season, and about how excited he was to face the 2000 campaign. “I don’t think I’ve ever had more fun coaching than the last six weeks of the (‘99) season, and I think the kids did too once they realized what they’re expectations were,” said Barnett. “I felt we were as good as anybody in the country by the end of the year.”
Yet the 2000 schedule could not be ignored. For the third straight season, the opener would be played against Colorado State in Denver at Mile High Stadium. The Rams went 8-4 in 1999, including a 41-14 rout of the Buffs. CSU was not going away, and the Rams were a preseason favorite to repeat as …

Duck Soup
A game against the 6-5 Washington Huskies seemed the most likely scenario for the Buffs as championship games were being contested in other conferences . Along with the title games, though, was a make-up game between Miami and UCLA. The game, originally scheduled for September 26th, had been re-scheduled to December 5th due to fears that a hurricane would hit the Miami area the last weekend in September. For UCLA, playing the game in December proved disastrous, as the 3rd-ranked Bruins fell to the Hurricanes, 49-45. The loss eliminated UCLA from consideration for the National Championship game (once beaten Florida State being chosen to face undefeated and top-ranked Tennessee), with the Rose Bowl being the Bruins’ consolation prize.
UCLA being selected to host the Rose Bowl set off a chain reaction, as Arizona, which had hoped to head to Pasadena for the first time in school history, was now relegated to the Holiday Bowl and a match-up with Nebraska. Oregon, in turn, which had anticipated a trip to San Diego to face the Cornhuskers, was now in line for a Christmas Day bowl game, the Aloha Bowl, with Colorado.
Oregon’s loss was Colorado’s gain, as the Buffs were …

November 27th – @ Nebraska #14 Nebraska 16, Colorado 14
“General” Robert Neyland, longtime head coach at the University of Tennessee, is a legendary name in the annals of college football. In leading the Volunteers to over 160 wins in 20 seasons, the College Football Hall of Fame coach was used to winning. “Almost all games,” Neyland pointed out, “are lost by the losers, not won by the winners.”
Such was the case in Memorial Stadium on Thanksgiving weekend, 1998.
The Buffs, despite facing a Nebraska team equally riddled with injuries and self-doubt, came out playing like an intimidated team. Early mistakes proved to be the difference in a frustrating 16-14 defeat, giving Nebraska a seven game winning streak over the Buffs.
Just as was the case in 1995, when the Buffs allowed Ahman Green to score on a 57-yard run less than two minutes into the game, (on the way to a 44-21 loss) and in 1992, when an interception led to a three-yard scoring run by Derek Brown with only 1:14 off of the first quarter clock (en route to a 52-7 rout), Colorado played early like a team destined to lose.
After a touchback on the opening …

September 12th – Boulder No. 16 Colorado 29, Fresno State 21
Mike Moschetti, playing before the home fans for the first time, connected with sophomore wide receiver Javon Green for a 25-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter on what would prove to be the winning score as No. 16 held off Fresno State, 29-21.
Colorado, which entered the game as a 21 ½ point favorite, found itself behind 14-3 early in the second quarter before a stunned crowd of 42,623. Two touchdown runs by Bulldog quarterback Billy Volek, the second coming early in the second quarter, gave Buff fans more to worry about other than the light rain which fell sporadically throughout the game.
Junior wide receiver Marcus Stiggers scored the Buffs’ first touchdown of the afternoon with 3:38 to play before half on a 27-yard end around. The extra point attempt by Jeremy Aldrich failed, leaving the score at 14-9. Aldrich, who had earlier connected from 34 yards, then hit on a 30-yarder as the first half expired.
Fresno State still held the halftime lead, 14-12, but the momentum had clearly shifted, with the CU defense taking control of the game.
It wasn’t until late in the …
