Colorado second in the Pac-12 conference in returning starters
Okay, so having a large number of returning starters from one of the worst offenses and one of the worst defenses in school history is not great news, but it beats the alternative … completely starting over with 22 freshmen.
The Pac-12 media guide is out, and its 44 pages have some interesting tidbits (though Buff fans should avoid pages 32-44, as they contain the statistics from the 2012 season), and one of the notes worth noting is the list of returning starters.
Colorado is second in the conference, with 19 returning starters (nine offense; eight defense; two specialists) second only to Washington, which has 20. Three schools are right behind CU, with 17 returning starters – Arizona; Oregon State; and Washington State. (It’s interesting to note that Arizona is listing that all 11 of its defensive starters are back from 2012).
Last on the list is Utah, which has only 12 starters (six offense; six defense) returning this fall.

(Boring) College Football Playoff logo announced
From USA Today … The College Football Playoff checked another item off its to-do list Monday, as fan voting chose the “golden football” as the official logo for the new event that will crown the Football Bowl Subdivision champion beginning in 2014.
The golden football logo earned 38% of a fan vote, besting choice No. 3 (a v-shaped golden logo that resembled an inverted wishbone that earned 25% of the vote) and choice No. 1, which featured a U.S. flag-inspired look but bore some resemblance to the NFL shield. Choice No. 1 got 24%.

Spring Grades – Offense
While grading the Colorado football team is more difficult this year due to the closing of spring practices from the public, there is enough cumulative information available to start taking a look at how the 2012 Buffs are shaping up … at least until 27 true freshmen hit campus this summer.
Quarterbacks
Spring Game statistics – Sophomore Connor Wood, 7-of-10 passing for 137 yards and two touchdowns; red-shirt freshman John Schrock, 3-of-8 passing for 26 yards; red-shirt freshman Stevie Joe Dorman, two-for-two passing for 34 yards. Did not participate: sophomore Nick Hirschman (injured); incoming true freshman Shane Dillon; likely junior transfer Jordan Webb).
Prior to the Spring game, Colorado head coach Jon Embree said transfer Connor Wood had “finished (the spring) strong,” but added that Wood “needs to relax . . . sometimes he presses, whether it’s over-gripping the ball or trying to throw it real hard. He just needs to relax. But he had a good spring.”
Of Wood’s performance at the Spring game, Embree “I thought No. 5 was sharp. He missed a couple of deep balls . . . but I thought he played well.”
Embree said Wood, a …

Summer in Boulder never quiet for receiving corps
Summer in Boulder.
Warm days. Shakespeare in the Parks. Farmers’ markets. Hiking, biking, and barbeques …
… and turmoil in the University of Colorado receiving units.
A look back – 2009
While the 2009 preseason magazines were discussing the merits of head coach Dan Hawkins’ “ten wins; no excuses” statement, the Colorado receiving corps was undergoing an upheaval. Josh Smith, a record-setting kick returner (1,568 yards on 50 kickoff returns) and a speed burner being counted upon to stretch opposing defenses, announced he was leaving the program. Citing a desire to pursue a music major not offered in Boulder, Smith set his sights on a return to the state of California (ultimately settling on UCLA).
Also leaving the Buffs, but with less fanfare, was tight end Ryan Wallace. The red-shirt freshman was reportedly homesick, expressing a desire to return to a school closer to his native Bowling Green, Kentucky.
The loss of Smith and Wallace were off-set during the summer as news of the pursuit of transfer Toney Clemons. Unhappy with the new coaching staff at Michigan, Clemons, a former four-star recruit, was looking for a new home. Clemons …

2010 Spring Practice – First Look: Offense
Quarterbacks
Returning players: Cody Hawkins (Sr.), Tyler Hansen (Jr.), and Clark Evans (R-Fr.). Walk-ons: Seth Labato (R-Fr.), Blake Stanley (R-Fr.) (Walk-on quarterback Jerry Slota left the team, transferring to DeAnza Community College in California).
New in 2010: Josh Moten (Fr. – 2009 recruit; enrolled in January); Nick Hirschman (Fr. – 2010 recruit; enrolled in January)
If Dan Hawkins wants to have a parade of angry, torch-wielding Buff fans at his doorstep, all he has to do is to name his son Cody as the presumptive starter for the 2010 season.
Okay, that’s not going to happen – at least not during spring practice.
So don’t go nuclear if you read about the quarterback race this spring being an “open competition”. Every job is supposed to be open for back-ups to do their best to oust the incumbents. There was a minor uproar on the internet when Rivals.com published a story entitled, “Quarterback battle brewing in Boulder?”, but the story contained no insights as to any such controversy. In fact, the story contained the following … “Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Eric Kiesau will likely not name their starter for 2010 anytime soon. …

INTRODUCING THE COLORADO RECRUITING CLASS OF 2009
(Biographies of each recruit found below)
Eligibility – While not unexpected news, it was good news nonetheless. Offensive lineman Max Tuioti-Mariner and Ryan Miller, both injured the week of the Florida State game last fall, were given a medical red-shirt, meaning that their participation in the first three games in 2008 will not count against their eligibility. Next fall, Miller will again be a sophomore; MTM will again be a freshman. So, how’s the rehabilitation coming? Miller, at the Recruiting luncheon: “Im back …
