Iowa State – School records set by Stewart, Detmer, Westbrook, and Johnson

November 21st – Boulder #11 Colorado 31, Iowa State 10

Kordell Stewart threw for three touchdowns and 279 yards as the Buffs raced out to a 28-3 halftime lead before cruising to a 31-10 win over Iowa State.

The Buffs put the Cyclones on notice early that Colorado would not fall victim to the complacency which had cost the Cornhuskers. Linebacker Chad Brown recovered a fumble by Iowa State fullback Chris Ulrich on the Cyclones’ first possession. On the very next play from scrimmage, Stewart connected with fullback James Hill on a 19-yard score, and Colorado was ahead to stay, 7-0.

After Iowa State cut the Buffs’ lead to 7-3, the Buffs scored three touchdowns over a nine-minute span in the second quarter to make the second half irrelevant. First Stewart hit Michael Westbrook for 24 yards and a 14-3 lead. Next, Stewart connected with tight end Christian Fauria from one-yard out and a 21-3 advantage. Finally, Lamont Warren took it in from three yards to finish off a nine-play, 82-yard drive, and the Buffs were dominating, 28-3.

Stewart’s 279 passing yards gave him 2,109 for the year, the first time in Colorado history a Buff quarterback had surpassed the 2,000-yard…

#20 Kansas – First game against a ranked Jayhawk team since 1975

November 14th – @ Kansas #13 Colorado 25, #20 Kansas 18

The Kansas Jayhawks returned home to Lawrence to face the Buffs after being humbled by Nebraska, 49-7. It was the Jayhawks’ first conference loss after averaging 33 points per game in accumulating four Big Eight wins. With the Buffs’ falling to the Cornhuskers by an equally lopsided score the week before, the Buffs were not in a position to take the Jayhawks lightly.

An estimated crowd of 43,000, the largest crowd to witness a Colorado/Kansas game in Lawrence since 1968, watched the Buffs come out and dominate play in the first half. Senior defensive tackle Marcellous Elder tipped a pass from Kansas quarterback Chip Hilleary late in the first quarter, with the ball landing in the arms of Elder’s linemate Leonard Renfro. Renfro took the ball in from 18 yards out for a 7-0 Colorado lead.

A few moments later, after the Buffs’ defense had snuffed out another Jayhawk drive and Kordell Stewart had connected with Charles E. Johnson on a 54-yard fly pattern to the one yard line, junior tailback James Hill busted over a yard out for a 14-0 Colorado lead.

Oklahoma State – Buff defense posts second shutout of the season

November 7th – Boulder #16 Colorado 28, Oklahoma State 0

Oklahoma State was a much improved team in 1992. Rebounding from a disastrous 0-10-1 1991 campaign, the Cowboys were a respectable 4-4 coming into Boulder, including conference wins over Missouri and Iowa State. But the Cowboys were the Buffs’ Homecoming opponent for a reason.

In 1992, Oklahoma State played its role of sacrificial lamb well, succumbing to the Buffs. 28-0.

Colorado posted a touchdown in each quarter, the first coming on a Lamont Warren two-yard run to cap a 12-play drive on the Buffs’ first possession. Warren scored again in the second stanza as the Buffs provided the Homecoming crowd of 51,559 a 14-0 halftime cushion. With a two-score lead, the Buffs were never again threatened. The dominating Buff defense posted its second shutout of the season, forcing a school-record eight turnovers.

In the third quarter, the Buffs’ touchdown was set up by a fumble recovery by Leonard Renfro deep in Cowboy territory. Quarterback Kordell Stewart, returning to the starting lineup after sitting out with a broken wrist, connected with Michael Westbrook on a record-setting score of nine yards to conclude the one play drive.

October 31st – @ Nebraska #8 Nebraska 52, #8 Colorado 7

Happy Halloween.

Nebraska had not defeated the Colorado Buffaloes since 1988. Still, Colorado, in step with the times, was not resting on past glories. The Buffs had converted to a more-open, air-it-out attack, giving up on the smash-mouth football which was the traditional path to success in the Big Eight. While Colorado was competing for national championships, Nebraska had gone four years without defeating a top ten team, and had won only two of its last 11 games against ranked opponents.

It was time for the Buffs to demonstrate once and for all to the Cornhuskers that “three yards in a cloud of dust” football was a thing of the past.

Oops.

Nebraska dominated, decimated, and decapitated the Buffaloes on Halloween Day, 1992, by a lopsided score of 52-7.

Just over a minute into the game, the Buffs’ 25-game Big Eight unbeaten streak was in jeopardy. Freshman quarterback Koy Detmer received the starting nod over Kordell Stewart when Stewart was unable to practice the week leading up to the game due to lingering injuries. Kansas State – Defense sets Big Eight records in 54-7 rout

October 24th – Boulder #9 Colorado 54, Kansas State 7

The 9th-ranked Buffs controlled an entire game for the first time in 1992, dominating Kansas State 54-7. Colorado scored early and often, raising the home team total on the scoreboard on seven of its first 11 possessions in cruising to a 30-0 halftime lead before a sold-out Folsom Field crowd of 52,235. The Wildcats, with a respectable 3-2 record coming into Boulder, left town without an offensive touchdown, scoring only on a an interception return after the game was well in hand.

The Colorado defense let the Kansas State offense know it was in for a long afternoon on the first series, as the Wildcats gained zero yards on three plays before punting. On the Buffs’ first possession, Kordell Stewart led the offensive unit on an eight-play, 74-yard drive, culminated in a two-yard pass from Stewart to tight end Christian Fauria. Two short drives – one after an interception, the other after a long punt return by Deon Figures - gave junior kicker Mitch Berger the opportunity to connect on two short field goals (of 25 and 23 yards), giving Colorado a 13-0 lead.

Colorado v. Alabama – 1991 Blockbuster Bowl

The 1991 season was a mixed bag for Colorado and its fans. An 8-2-1 regular season record, along with a share of a third consecutive Big Eight title, were certainly nothing to be ashamed of. Still, after posting an 11-1 record in 1989 and an 11-1-1 record in 1990, an eight win season seemed like a letdown to many in the Buff Nation. Still, there were some memorable games in 1991, including a big 34-17 win over Oklahoma in Norman (when the Buffs were ranked 22nd and the Sooners ranked 12th), and the epic Ice Bowl 19-19 tie with Nebraska in Boulder which earned the Buffs a share of the Big Eight title.

After a 2-2 start, Colorado had gone 6-0-1 in conference play. The Buffs were far from dominant down the stretch, though, defeating unranked Oklahoma State, Kansas, and Iowa State by a combined 13 points. The Buffs finished the regular season ranked 15th in the nation, earning a trip to Miami for the 2nd annual Blockbuster Bowl. The opponent would be 8th-ranked and SEC runner-up Alabama, looking for its own measure of national recognition.

November 16th – Boulder #16 Colorado 30, Kansas 24

The Kansas Jayhawks, despite a lopsided 59-23 loss to Nebraska the weekend before, still harbored hopes of post-season play heading into the Colorado game. Kansas was 5-4 on the year, including shutout wins over Iowa State (41-0) and Oklahoma State (31-0). The Kansas/Oklahoma State score, if not the Buffs’ overall performance in the 16-12 nail-biter against the Cowboys, should have been to focus Colorado on the task at hand.

Once again, though, the Buffs were in a dogfight which came down to the game’s final minute.

Early in the third quarter, last minute heroics did not appear to be the order of the day, but it was not because of Colorado’s domination. With 10:49 remaining in the third quarter, the Buffs found themselves down 24-10 to the Jayhawks. The teams had battled to a 10-10 halftime tie, with the Colorado touchdown coming on a 48-yard touchdown pass from halfback Lamont Warren to wide receiver Charles Johnson on an option play.

Oklahoma State – A fake field goal saves Buffs

November 9th – @ Oklahoma State #14 Colorado 16, Oklahoma State 12

The Oklahoma State Cowboys entered their 1991 game against Colorado with an 0-7-1 overall record, having managed only a 6-6 tie against equally hapless Iowa State. There was little for the Cowboys to play for in November other than pride.

The Colorado Buffaloes, meanwhile, still had the chance at a third straight Big Eight title.

It would be fair to expect, then, for the Buffs to roll to a blowout win over the Cowboys.

Not so.

Senior wide receiver Robbie James made a name for himself with only six seconds remaining against Oklahoma State. With Colorado trailing 12-10, James connected with tight end Christian Fauria on a 20-yard pass off of a fake field goal attempt to give the Buffs a 16-12 victory. The unlikely outcome, while not pretty, kept the hopes of an Orange Bowl birth alive for Colorado.
