 November 25th – at Utah         Colorado 17, Utah 14

Colorado used an almost perfect first half to take the lead, and then played just well enough in the second half to hold the lead, taking the first “Rumble in the Rockies” against Utah, 17-14.

Utah junior kicker Coleman Petersen, the Pac-12 Player-of-the-Week for his three-for-three performance in a 30-27 overtime victory over Washington State, had a chance to tie the game with a 48-yard kick, but the effort went wide and short, giving Colorado the hard-earned victory.

The road win, as every Buff fan could recite in his sleep, was the first for Colorado since 2007. The school-record streak of 23 road losses (24 counting the 2007 Independence Bowl) finally came to an end before a crowd of 45,026 in Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City.

Utah came into the game hot, with four straight Pac-12 victories, and a chance at a berth in the Pac-12 championship game. Colorado came in cold, with a 2-10 record and a 23-game road losing streak. Utah had everything to gain; Colorado had nothing to lose.

So what happened? For one of the few times all season, Colorado played like the Colorado team Buff …

No. 21 USC 42, Colorado 17

“Eventually, it will turn their way”, said Colorado head coach Jon Embree after Colorado lost its seventh game in a row, falling 42-17 to No. 21 USC.

Trojan quarterback Matt Barkley threw for a school recored six touchdowns as USC used a 21-point second quarter to pull away from the Buffs. Colorado running back Rodney Stewart, out for the previous three games, made a successful return, with 88 yards rushing and 67 yards receiving, but the Colorado offense overall continued to make crucial mistakes at critical times, preventing the Buffs from keeping the game competitive.

Unlike the previous two games, in which the Buffs fell behind Oregon and Arizona State 29-0 and 21-0 respectively, Colorado started the first Friday night home game in school history as if an upset was a real possibility. Dressed in all black uniforms (complete with black helmets) the Colorado Buffs played their best first quarter in a month. Colorado took the opening kickoff, and marched smartly down the field. A ten yard pass from senior quarterback Tyler Hansen to running back Rodney Stewart followed by a 15-yard pass from Hansen to Toney Clemons put the ball in USC …

Spring Grades – Offense

//posted 6.16.2011

Mid-term papers turned in – It’s time for the grades

Expectations for the Colorado Buffaloes for the 2011 season are, well, mixed. There are great hopes for the future of the program under the new head coach, Jon Embree, but a daunting schedule and a perceived dearth of talent on the roster mute the chances for an immediate breakout.

With that in mind, the below grades for each unit on the team is not with respect to similar athletes on the rosters of Colorado’s Pac-12 rivals, but rather with respect to what we knew about those units heading into the spring, and how well those players and their coaches did in improving their standing.

Quarterbacks – Spring Grade: B/B+

Spring Game stats: Tyler Hansen - 8-15, 124 yards; one TD; Nick Hirschman – 11-19, 170 yards; two TD’s; Brent Burnette – 4-8, 40 yards; one TD, one interception

After three years of Cody v. Tyler, Colorado fans are conditioned to spring practices in which the battle for the starting quarterback position is the lead story. In 2011, the Buff Nation was once again primed for a battle. Senior Tyler Hansen was the returning starter, but there was a new …

Spring Practice Preview

Spring Practice Preview -

Special Teams

Roster: Toney Clemons (Sr.); Arthur Jaffee (Sr.); Brian Lockridge (Sr.); Will Jefferson (Jr.); Justin Castor (So.); Zach Grossnickle (So.); Ryan Iverson (So.); Justin Gorman (R-Fr.)

Players Lost: Aric Goodman; Joe Silipo; Scotty McKnight; Cody Hawkins; Travon Patterson

Numbers Don’t Lie

Yuck.

There was very little which was special about the special teams play by the University of Colorado in 2010.

Colorado was ranked 88th in net punting last year, with Zach Grossnickle struggling to a 35.7 yards net average (Colorado’s opponents’ net average was 40.2). Senior kicker Aric Goodman connected on two-thirds of his attempts (10-for-15), but was only accurate half the time from beyond 30 yards (5-for-10).

In the return game, Colorado was adequate at best. There were several long kickoff returns, with a long of 89 yards by Arthur Jaffee against Iowa State, but the Buffs were unable to come up with a kick returner which they felt comfortable with, as four players posted between eight and 14 kickoff returns during the season. All four – Arthur Jaffee (14); Toney Clemons (10); Brian Lockridge (10); and Will Jefferson (8) – return in 2011, but there are no guarantees that …

CSU 23, Colorado 17

//posted 9.6.2009

September 6th – Boulder       Colorado State 23, Colorado 17

 Colorado State quarterback Grant Stucker passed for 208 yards, while running back John Mosure had two scores in leading the Rams to a 23-17 victory over Colorado in Boulder. The win was the first in Folsom Field for Colorado State since 1986, sending most of the near-sellout crowd of 53,168 home in dismay.

 The Colorado Buffaloes’ 2009 season started about as badly as a season can.

 The Rams took the opening kickoff smartly down the field, taking only six plays to cover 80 yards, with Mosure scoring from a yard out to give Colorado State a 7-0 lead just 3:13 into the game. The Buffs’ response? Three-and-out, gaining six yards.

 Two series later, the score was up to 14-0, as the Rams took advantage of an interception and a personal foul penalty to start their drive at mid-field. The drive took ten plays, but the result was the same – touchdown, Colorado State, with Stucker and Mosure connecting from 14 yards out.

 While the Colorado State offense was moving smoothly, the Colorado offense was anemic. The Buffs generated all of five first downs in the first half, gaining less than 100 …
